The congregants have calmed down over the years having arguments only a couple of times a year. But when they do, you can guarantee that they will be heated. A very big plus, they keep the building very comfortable throughout the year. I never sat down without it being feeling relaxed while I prayed.

It is SOOO strange to write a review for a house of worship! I am not a religious gal (I put the…read mores-e-c-u-l-a-r in secular) - and it's been a lot of years since I've been to any service. I attended a Saturday morning service and Bat Mitzvah, and was impressed as soon as I walked in the building, I was immediately impressed with how light, bright and open everything was. The rabbi has a great personality - his love really comes through. The cantor has one of the most amazing singing voices I've ever heard - she is phenomenal! This is a reform congregation - and as the reviewer Joel mentioned - everyone is welcome! Gay, interfaith, whatever. It's a very warm and inviting place of community. I don't know that I was touched by the spirit to seek out a religious connection - but if that ever were to happen, I'd really hope I could find a place like BHS to call home. It's what a religious institution should be!

This is an amazing reform synagogue located in the heart of Brooklyn Heights. It is a warm and…read more welcoming community with an outstanding Rabbi. It has programs for infants through seniors. Interfaith and gay families have a home at the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue. There is a great concern for Tzedakah, education and mutual support. BHS has been running a homeless shelter for over 20 years, religious services, educational programs and social events. It is a place that can easily become your home.

High Holy Day services open to all: This year, for the High Holiday services -- which are always…read moreopen to nonmembers, and do not require tickets -- two extra evening services have been added, so there will be 6 pm and 8 pm services for the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. If you are not a member of a Jewish synagogue, attending Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur services can be a challenge. Some temples are open only to members and others sell tickets to non-members. One congregation, Kolot Chayeinu, which meets in Park Slope, has always welcomed non-members to their services, at no cost, to a great response--standing room only at most services. To accommodate demand this year Kolot has added extra evening services for both High Holy Day evenings, September 28 and October 7th. Kolot welcomes people from across the spectrum of Jewish observance to attend these services. Here is their notice: Kolot Chayeinu/Voices of Our Lives welcomes one and all to its open High Holy Day services in Park Slope. You don't need tickets and attendance is free, although donations are encouraged. I have been a member for 32 years and am amazed at how vibrant and wonderful our congregation has…read moreremained. We are a warm, welcoming synagogue. Our traditional services attract 75-100 people on Shabbat of all ages--we even have a junior congregation. For the high holidays, our sanctuary is filled with an an entire separate service in Russian which attracts over one thousand people for Yom Kippur. We DO have a caterer--an excellent Russian Kosher caterer with a beautiful ballroom facility. We DO have a girls yeshiva as an tenant upstairs. And we are in the process of renovating our sanctuary and adjoining Continental Room. Sisterhood and Men's Club offer a variety of wonderful events throughout the year, from wine-tastings, to movies, to Cheder classes and Rosh Chodesh dinners. Come visit us for a Shabbat and see if you don't quickly feel right at home! All ages are welcome.

I sent my dad here while on a trip to NYC as it was the closest conservative (actually it's…read moreorthodox) synagogue to the hotel we were staying at. He went for services on Saturday morning, and said there were tons of people there and he was very impressed generally. They noticed that he was new and invited him to roll up the torah, which was cool of them if you ask me. He also reported that the kiddush was the biggest he's ever seen and the cholent was a lot like his grandmother used to make. Overall, the most glowing report about a synagogue my dad's ever given. So, if you're in the area, go. Also, they have an emeritus rabbi who was ordained in 1935 and still attends services regularly. Pretty cool.

This is just the best shul in town. Murray Hill/Gramercy/Kips Bay is home toJews from all around…read morethe world. The diversity of congregants and heimish style services really makes this a prime choice if you are hunting for the right shul. Sometimes it is packed, sometimes it is small and cozy. But one thing is always constant--great spiritual services and a great kiddush to socialize and mingle with fellow Jews. Scotches, bourbons, chulent, kugels are some of the selections you will find on any given shabbat. The contrast of the old and new, Rabbi Kleiman and Rabbi Shloush, a 150 year old congregation and building, versus an energetic young professionals group called "The L'Chaim Club" just makes this place a must see. I highly reccomend stopping in either Friday night or Saturday day.
