Ahhh Mick the Meat. This guy has been a staple of my meals for, quite literally, years now in…read moreBirmingham. A refrigerator van on the corner of the outdoor market might be initially off-putting, but bear with me while I relate the tale of dear of Mickey M... So, I have lived in the Jewellery Quarter for around... Ohhh... 7/8 years now. When I first moved in my budget was majorly overstretched (working a shop job on minimum wage) so shopping on Birmingham Markets was really my only viable choice to actually get some fruit, veg and meat on the plate 7 days a week. We (me and the other half) very quickly came across Mick's van on the corner of the market (opposite the Bullring Tavern). For a bargainous £10 note, Mick furnished us with chicken breasts, steak, pork chops, lamb chops, a pack of bacon and sausages. All of the meat was great quality and ever since that first encounter we have been firm fans. We now tend to go for a £20 bundle and get much the same (except with the occasional bit of stewing steak, chicken portions and whole chickens in the mix). Just £20 tends to sort us out for meat for around 6 weeks (keeping in mind we have at least two vegetarian meals in a week). A trip to see Mick is always like visiting an old friend. If you haven't been back for a while he will enquire as to what you've been up to (in a friendly way, not a pushy one), ask how life's going and let you know about any new or exciting stock he's managed to lay his hands on. We've had everything from Turkey crowns the size of your head to duck breasts from him in the past and it's always been great quality at a great price. If you're looking for something to BBQ, he offers set packages at a set price but state your budget and let him know what you're looking for he will set you up with the best deal you can get. Don't get me wrong, you can certainly get a wider selection in the Indoor markets; but if you're looking to buy meat for a family you won't find better value than Mick The Meat and his big white van.

I love animals and I also enjoy meat, which is why I support humane farming. I would rather pay a…read morelittle extra on meat than buy cheap mass produced, battery famed products. I refuse to put the latter into my body on health and moral grounds. I really like this butchers. It has an old fashioned feel to it, a time warp from the 1950's. The butcher's are very helpful with any questions you may have about where the meat has come from and what is the best way to cook it. I asked him yesterday how to get the crackle crispy on belly draft and he told me that he will score it for me and told me to pour boiling water over the skin before cooking. This will ensure that I get a nice crispy piece of crackling to go with my pork dinner. They sell lots of ready cut and marinated meats that are great for mid week meals. They stock the finest steak or venison for a dinner party. They also offer a wide selection of game birds and will prepare anything you request. I would seriously recommend buying your meat from here and not from the major chain supermarkets. It is healthier and a more humane way of sustaining a diet that contains meat.

Johnstan's is a class act as far as family butcher's goes. For one, they offer 25 varieties of…read moresausage, all which are made on the premises, as well as what you'd expect from a standard butcher and so much more. And all the products and cuts displayed in a way to rival a Selfridge's window dresser's efforts! At Christmas they stock good sized fresh turkeys, and at Winter-time there are whole pheasants, heads, bright plumage and all, hanging from the canopy outside. As I write, it is Spring and the sun is having a go at shining. So I return home with seasonally apt fodder in the form of free-range Spring loin lamb chops for a one-man barbeque.

Lockarts is probably one of the best Butchers shops in the city. The service is unfailingly…read morefriendly and polite and the staff really know their meat. Most of the meat is prepared on the premises and they even make their own sausages from time to time. Their beef and lamb mince is always of a really high quality, as you will see when you cook it and hardly any fat is created. Their best product, though, is their bacon, which is thick and very, very tasty. They also carry a selection of pies and pasties, smoked cheeses, plus sauces and condiments for cooking meat. In the summer they do an excellent range of meats for use on the BBQ. At Christmas and Easter time the queue is often out the door, and the shop is often busy on Saturday mornings, which should tell you that this is a place much admired by the locals round these parts. This is well worth a visit.

Before I start this review I should let you know that I know squat about butchers. However, if I've…read morelearned one thing over the years from various trips with my dad, it's that a good butcher has to be friendly; in fact they have to be positively jolly. That is certainly the case at G.A Lockhart where the staff provide such great interaction with the customers that it seems like something from the distant past, when high streets weren't clogged up with a thousand stores each an exact replica of the last. This is the butcher whom my family have used for years and I can confirm that every Sunday a piece of Lockhart meat has graced our table and satisfied a demanding family of brummies. I don't really know the price of meats etc, I mean as a student the closest thing I usually get to meat is a late night kebab, but Lockhart certainly seems reasonable and they provide good produce. A refreshingly friendly establishment with some delicious British meat on offer.

As well as a halal…read morebutcher, (handy for keema, or minced lamb), they have a big range of South Asia and Caribbean fruit, vegetables, ingredients, herbs and spices. Bird's eye chillies, large chillies, methi (fenugreek), okre (bindi, ladiesfingers), cassava, and a whole host of fresh veg are displayed outside. This is your only place to get these items locally and independently. Small trees and plants for sale add an exotic touch of decoration. Inside there are single ground spices, spice mixes, specialist bread, desert and dumpling mixes, rubs and plenty of tinned fruit including ackee. Jars of spicy sauces, pastes and marinades too. My favourite is Dunn's River Jerk Seasoning. A desert spoon sized amount with the same amount of oil mixed into mushrooms, potatoes, onion and kidney beans and thrown into the oven on Gas Mark 6 for 20 minutes makes a hearty warming meal. Everything in here cost a fraction of what it would cost in the 'World Food' isle of a supermarket. An example? In Sainsbury's over the road, 7 tiny pre-packed bird's-eye chillies cost around £1.50. At Ali's they are around 10p. Drinks are a bargain too. Bottled water is 50p, (handy if you've forgotten a water bottle and you are visiting LA Fitness next door), and cans of fizzy pop are around the same, sometimes cheaper. At the till, there are chocolate bars and potato snacks to keep you going until you arrive home and cook up a storm in your kitchen. And if you feel you've had a bargain and want to give back to the world, pop a few coins of your change in the charity tins.
