My youngest was home from college for the weekend and she introduced me to Cookout. The Mocksville location is take-out only. Some Cookouts offer dine-in as well. My daughter has been to Cookouts many times so she is a veteran of how to navigate the menu. My suggestion to you is to go online and study their menu and different options how to order. You'll thank me later. Anyway, I ordered a tray, it comes with a main dish and two sides. I got the big double burger with Cajun fries and cheese bites and a Diet Coke. My daughter ordered the same with a sweet tea. I chose lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup and mayo as toppings. I have to say, the burger, which came with two patties was very good. Nice chargrill flavor and the toppings were fresh and crisp. The fries appear to be fresh-cut and were, well, fries. The cheese bites were very crisp and tasty. The drive thru process was very quick. Our order was taken and filled in a timely manner. The staff was friendly and efficient. All in all it was a positive experience. And the best part? My daughter and I had a good lunch all for $18 for both is us. The burger is the best fast food burger in Davie County. It's not even close. It is right off the I40 main Mocksville exit (exit 170 I believe). Large packing lot. Drive thru is efficient. Food is standard Cookout items. Great shakes. Decent burgers and dogs. Right now this Cookout isn't as crowded as most but I expect that to change in the future.

The biscuits are always fresh and fluffy, the country ham is second to none, and you definitely cannot go wrong with the bacon, egg, and cheese. The collard greens were really good and definitely one of the highlights. The coleslaw, though, was way too pepper heavy for my taste. Also, the piece of bread that comes with the meal was honestly not worth the calories. I'd rather see them either upgrade the bread or skip it altogether. The Ox Tail was excellent - falling off the bone tender with a lot of flavor. As always with this dish, there are small bones as well as the large ones, and there will be some small area of gristle, so some caution is required as you eat. The rice, peas, cabbage mixture and the plantains were all very good, though a bit under seasoned for my tastes - some salt and a bit of hot sauce cured that up quickly. I didn't care for the well sized fritter, there was no flavor and it was rather greasy. The cost was $18, and while there was a lot of food (take out container was packed full), most of it was the rice, peas, etc. The ox tail was not overly abundant. Since 2020, i have seen a gradual decline in quality and the variety of offerings. Tonight was by far the worst i have experienced. Even the server said that there have been allot of complaints regarding the food. The order was simple. Chicken strips, fries, coleslaw and hush puppies. The chicken and hush puppies were way over cooked! Hard, dry and i simply could not eat them. The fries were limp, cold and greasy. The worst was the coleslaw! Warm, obviously not refrigerated and looking spoiled. My wifes food was the same. They offered to remake the order, but since we both ordered different things and both orders bad, i chose not to accept that. If they remade the food, i cannot believe it would have been better. If they have not hit rock bottom, i cannot see how they can continue to survive. This place used to be packed on nights. It is so sad to see an icon die like this. They keep the menu simple, focus on quality, and add little touches that make people feel like they're getting more than they paid for--piles of fries and free peanuts while you wait. Potatoes and peanuts are inexpensive, yet they create a sense of abundance and generosity. Honestly, it's a brilliant strategy. But this visit gave me a very different perspective. I arrived just before noon on a Thursday. It wasn't busy, so ordering was easy. But the prices stopped me in my tracks. A little bacon cheeseburger alone cost more than $10. By the time I added a small fry and a regular drink, my total was over $20 after tax and tip. The tipping part is what really stuck with me. When the payment screen prompted me to leave 5%, 10%, 15%, or 20%, I couldn't help but wonder--what exactly am I tipping for? This wasn't table service. I ordered at the counter, filled my own drink, grabbed my own condiments, picked up my food when called, and would clear my own table. Yet, out of guilt, I still tipped. That little moment of hesitation left a bigger impression on me than the food itself. And the fries--once a fun "extra"--didn't feel like a perk this time. My "small" order was far more than I could eat, and I ended up throwing half of them away. What used to feel generous now just felt wasteful. I enjoyed the meal, but walking away, I realized I'd remember the cost, the tipping awkwardness, and the wasted fries more than the taste of the burger. It made me think: for the same $20, there are plenty of other places where I could sit down, be served, and leave with a better overall experience. In the end, I'll probably shy away from Five Guys and fast food in general. They still make a good burger, but the value equation just doesn't add up anymore.

On average, i was not a favorite for eating in Clemmons. Even the chain restaurants were less appealing in this town. However, i was pleasantly surprised how good five guys was. This will be my go for Clemmons in the future.
