I believe their prices are the cheapest in Portsmouth, and yet the quality of their food is great (even the chips are always nice and fresh having been cooked in clean oil, and not kept heated for hours on end). It's such a busy place there's no time for chips to go stale anyway! Their Chinese menu is full of all your essential takeaway favourites at a great price and their king prawn dishes are my favourite as they feature a huge portion of proper big king size prawns, not the pale imitation you get in many places. Service is always polite, friendly and as quick as possible, and of course you can phone in your order then collect it to save waiting.

The chips have got better recently too; at first they were quite soggy and almost inedible, but somehow this has got fixed recently and they're bloody lovely! My only real gripe is that they won't take cards or even a cheque, everything is cash only, and you can't order from places like Just-eat or whatever which makes things a little inconvenient as I don't usually carry cash around. To be clear, this is not a sit down place where you dine on the catch of the day and the wait staff refill your drink whenever you take a sip. This place is small, you watch them cook your food, and there's a long line of regular customers waiting to place their order. If you really, really want to sit down and eat, there's one table on the sidewalk, but you'll be surrounded by customers waiting to order, so you may have some chips stolen from your plate by the more hungry customers. Overall, the fish was unbelievably good, the serving size was very generous, and the prices were extremely affordable. Whenever I'm in the area, I will visit the Village Fish Bar again.

They do great budget meals such as curry and rice or chicken chow mein for only 3.50. But my favourites are the noodle dishes. I am vegetarian so I always ask for tofu and Chinese vegetables in garlic sauce with crispy noodles - it's not on the menu but they can create it. Befor I went veggie a few years ago I used to order the seafood dish with crispy noodles - so tasty - so authentic - and there's lots of it on the plate. I also recommend Fookin Fried Rice - I dare you order it without giggling and their ho fun - (flat rice noodle) dishes with char sui or belly pork if you like a bit of meat. They are open from 11am till 8pm and are very buisy at luch times - the best time to go is tea time after the shops have shut. The staff that work their are just adorable - although very busy - so don't be offended if they are multi tasking while taking your order, answering the phone - and barking out orders in Cantonese to their colleagues all at the same time. If you haven't been there - go and try it - order crispy noodles with your favourite meat or vegetables, marvel at the speed of the cooking and then come back for more next week!
