They were kind and professional-- the exact opposite of the Ashland branch. Avoid the assistant manager at this branch at all costs if you are looking for support with your accounts.

I myself do not overdraw my accounts and have found Umpqua to be BY FAR the best bank in Ashland and an excellent regional bank overall. Never a fee. The Wells Fargo in Ashland used to be a First Interstate years ago. So I was astonished to see the familiar name and logo on an ATM on East Main a few days ago and then an entire bank in Jacksonville. I took the opportunity to use the ATM a couple of days ago and was surprised and pleased to see there was no surcharge to use it as there often is w/ other banks. Mechanics Bank reimburses me for any surcharges. I just looked up the website and see they describe themselves as a community bank. My kind of bank. Always has been. It has 188 locations in 9 states. It was founded in Wyoming in 1968 and acquired by Wells Fargo in 1996. Here's the story from the website of how it survived as an independent entity: "In 1996, Wells Fargo Bank acquired First Interstate Bancorp. At the time of the acquisition, we purchased six banking offices in Montana and Wyoming previously operated by First Interstate Bancorp and obtained an exclusive license to use the "First Interstate" name and logo in Montana, Wyoming, and the six neighboring states of Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota." That's how the familiar logo endures and I'm delighted to know the history. Further information from the website as of 2017: "After years of using the First Interstate name through a franchise agreement, we retained the rights to use the First Interstate name and logo in all 50 states. In August, Bank of the Cascades officially became First Interstate Bank." I now bank at two community banks, so the present lack of First Interstate in California is not a source of sadness but I will use their ATMs whenever I am here or in another state where they are.

I…read morehave been a loyal customer for over 25 years and done my best to roll with the name changes and inconvenience every time they merged with another bank. I had a friend who worked there and the atmosphere and service was excellent. After the last acquisition however, everything has gone downhill in terms of service. My latest disappointment was having my debit card denied and subsequently destroyed at the bank because of a suspected fraudulent transaction. It was destroyed at the bank on 12/27/23 and I was told I'd have a new card in 7-10 days. The card has not arrived and after being on hold for over 20 minutes, I learned that the new card was not even ordered until 1/9/24. So - customer service sucks whether you are in the bank face-to-face with a teller who is supposedly ordering a new debit card or waiting to speak to a human on the phone. I am looking into a new bank, as Umqua bank service reps are friendly, overworked, and constantly having to apologize for really poor service.
