One of the Best Sailing Experiences of My Life!…read more I had the most fantastic experience sailing on the Jersey Shore's Barnegat Bay on a beautiful September day. The "Steph-Er-Laur" is a Beneteau 32-foot sloop owned by sailboat charter company "A Day On The Bay." The tour departs from The Inn at Rivers Edge Marina, 223 East Lacey Rd. Forked River, NJ 08731 with easy access from the Garden State Parkway Exit 74. The sailing vessel has plenty of cockpit space and foredeck for relaxing while you sit back and take in the sights and beauty of the best sailing area that Barnegat Bay has to offer, including the Barnegat Lighthouse. This trip brought back so many beautiful memories for me since I sailed my pram sailboat, "Little Dipper," here as a child. The weather was perfect, and I had an outstanding time sailing with Captain Warren and his wife, Andi, who served as the "First Mate." I was a lieutenant with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary for 14 years and was impressed that Captain Warren went over the safety features of the boat and our trip before we left the dock. As a current university professor, I give Captain Warren an "A+" for sharing this important information first. I was also impressed that the sailboat was inspected and certified for safety by the US Coast Guard and that Captain Warren, is a United States Coast Guard Licensed Captain. A fellow passenger, Donna, was on the trip for a sailing lesson. Captain Warren is a terrific instructor, and I learned a few new things myself! Barnegat Bay is a very safe place to learn how to sail and enjoy the loveliness of the experience. The feeling is hard to describe as the sails catch the wind and the sloop gently heals over. Cold water and light snacks were offered, including a large and very clean bathroom or "head" as they are known on sailing vessels. I enjoyed the opportunity to take the helm and benefited from the Captain's extensive experience with wind, surf, and sail. I can't thank "A Day on the Bay" enough for a wonderful experience! Nick Nastasi otherwise know as "Slick Nick" is a poor excuse for a boat mechanic. I met Nick a few…read moreyears ago when I purchased my first boat. Since then he's done minor work for me such as winterize, de-winterize, bilge pump, etc. Being a first time boat owner I relied greatly on his expertise and experience. Unfortunately that has not been the case. I recently moved and lost the luxury of store my boat at home and docking it in my backyard. Nick was extremely helpful in offer the services of his colleagues to assist in winter store and possible slips for the following year. A few months ago I followed up with Nick to get an update on what the status was for the upcoming season. The following month I met him at the property where the boat was being stored as was told that the property owner was in the process of building additional slips and would most likely be ready in a few weeks. I followed up with him once again to get an update a few weeks later. At this point Nick informed me that there were no slips being built and I needed to find somewhere else to keep my boat. After inquiring at multiple local Marine's on prices of slips for the season it came up in conversation that Nick was my mechanic and that was the point were I learned "Slick Nick's" nickname to all reputable business owners in the Marine industry. I gave him the benefit of the doubt but to err on the side of caution I had a someone give me a second opinion on the boat prior to purchasing a slip for the year. I then learned that exhaust manifolds should have been maintenanced some time ago. I informed Nick I had a friend take a look since he couldn't seem to find the time and asked if he could take a look at his findings. Every week for the next few weeks it was the same story "I'll get over there Monday". Three weeks later he finally calls me tell me everything was fine. At that point I realized everything I had heard was true. I strongly urge anyone look for a reliable boat mechanic to avoid "Slick Nick" at all costs.
