I went to this dental clinic to fix a tooth and establish care. Before scheduling my first…read moreappointment, I asked if they accepted my dental insurance, and they said yes. They requested my insurance information through messages, and I provided everything they asked for, so I assumed everything was good to go. On the day of my appointment, the front desk simply checked me in and did not mention anything about a co-pay. I was seated in the dental chair where they took X-rays and panoramic photos of my teeth. I will say that the dentist was great--very kind, professional, and pleasant to talk to. However, when it was time to check out, the front desk told me I had to pay a $76 co-pay. I was surprised because I believed my insurance should have covered it. I didn't really have a choice but to pay, even though it was a heavy expense for me as a single mom who is currently unemployed. That same day, I messaged the clinic to ask for clarification about why I had to pay. I believe that before any procedures are done, the front desk should clearly explain what will be performed and what the expected costs or co-pays will be--especially for first-time patients. Only then was I told that while they accept TRICARE, they are not in network. This should have been clearly explained beforehand because not everyone understands the difference, including me. Now I have received another bill in the mail for $207, which is very frustrating and unexpected. I wish the clinic had been more transparent about costs and insurance coverage from the beginning Update: After communicating with one of the staff members, Maria, she was able to look into my concern and help resolve the issue. The additional $207 bill was corrected, and I did not end up having to pay it. I appreciate her taking the time to assist me and address the problem. Thank you.

Deep cleanings are usually separated into two separate appointments for all 4 quadrants; the procedure is usually prescribed when patients are developing gum disease. This office wanted to do all 4 quadrants in 45 minutes without even looking at my gums. Big red flag. The dentist could not tell me why I needed the procedure, yet they tried to get me to sign something saying they had explained everything. Deep cleanings are more expensive-that's where their incentive comes from. I went to another dentist today and had an amazing experience. It was a routine cleaning (which this office does not offer upon first appointment). The dentist told me my teeth and gums looked incredibly healthy. Go figure! Avoid, avoid, avoid this place.

I visited Dr. Mendelovitz after an absence of ten years (during which time I had seen other…read moredentists) regarding a molar that required replacement. A brief history: In 2014 Dr. Mendelovitz had detected a cavity between two molars and filled them both. One molar developed a nerve irritation which required a root canal, which may or may not have been caused by overzealous drilling. Perhaps I had waited too long to receive treatment and the fault was mine. Either way he referred me to an endodontist who did the root canal, and then I was sent back to Mendelovitz to get a crown put on the tooth. Shortly thereafter a gap developed between the two molars, in which food particles would get stuck, and I returned to Mendelovitz to address this, which he agreed to do by replacing the filling with a larger one free of charge. But on the day of the appointment I had an accident (broken limb) which required me to cancel and put me out of commission for some time. I then obtained proper medical insurance, and as Mendelovitz was out of my network, I saw another doctor who replaced the back filling, but there was still a gap! I lived with this gap for almost a decade, and food would get caught which would be difficult to extract even with dental tape, often causing bleeding, swelling, and pain. But I hesitated to get the filling replaced again, fearing a repeat of the prior nerve root irritation and I didn't want another root canal. After nearly ten years I could live with the gap no longer and returned to Mendelovitz to see about having the filling replaced with a partial crown or whatever he recommended. Since he wasn't in my network I was charged around $200 for the office visit, and he told me he didn't feel confident replacing the filling and referred me to an endodontist for a "minor surgery" he didn't specify. He advised using fluoride toothpaste to rebuild the enamel in the meantime. I had also scheduled a cleaning but that somehow got loss sight of during the visit, which seemed regrettable at the time but saved me another $150 or so. The front desk seemed to be pretty disorganized. So I went to a new dentist within my insurance network (the dentist who had replaced the filling no longer accepted my insurance) who replaced the filling with a partial crown, no questions asked and everything has been great. No endodontist, minor surgery, etc. And the partial crown was made on a 3D printer while I waited, so no second visit required. I'm not certain what all the fuss was about. I guess I understand Mendelovitz's hesitation, after all it's not good form for a dentist to cause or contribute to too many root canals, but he's been in practice so many years (indeed I used to go to him in college, back in the early 90s!) that you'd think his advice would be more sound. To the credit of the good doctor, I still use fluoride toothpaste, which was his recommendation, so something came out of the $200 office visit charge. But not as much as I'd have hoped. Moral of the story: don't wait to have dental work, and second opinions can be worth their weight in gold ... or whatever material the printer generates.

Dr. Mendelovitz over treats his patients and is very money hungry. Beware! He's very aggressive…read morewith his recommendations. I'd look for a more conservative doctor. I got a 2nd opinion elsewhere and was very relieved I don't go ahead with his plan.

I am over the moon! I have now recommended Dr. Khou as well to all of my coresidents, and I can see why he's so busy!! I cannot say even great things about Dr. Khou and this team at Ask Dental. He and his office are incredibly supportive -- the number of times I've needed to reschedule my follow ups or even come in during the weekdays in an emergency (chipped tooth, worried about sensitive gums etc), his office has always managed to schedule me in. I don't know how he does it!! They have a very efficient scheduling system via phone call and text reminders (of note, please make sure to not cancel within 48 hours - they say there's a cancellation fee but I haven't cancelled so soon before an appt before). Their office is so conveniently located in Westwood -- I always take time off and stroll from UCLA Reagan during the afternoons to make my dentist appointments. His office is so clean (doesn't have that traditional dentist smell!) & there's a calming big screen TV with calming music and a scenic montage in the background). His office also provides little goodie bags with dental floss, toothbrush and tooth paste for every dental check up!! Whoever was responsible for sanitizing the room clearly was in a hurry to go to lunch because we we're right after the staffs lunch. There was a bloody cloth over the bedside tray, and a container full of old blood sitting in the room. The dentist comes in and rudely brushes of any of our feelings and concerns away as well as refusing to give our special needs son any anxiety meds. My husband and I would of left but we had already stuck hundreds of dollars in to get him the surgery done. So then we're told to go out in the waiting room to wait. The procedure took about an hour give or take. When our special needs son was done they walked him out with some gauze and that was it. No after care instructions no ice pack no nothing. Luckily our son is our middle child and we have had experience with our other children.
