I've always wanted to go there so I wasn't going to let this opportunity get away. So I investigated the VRBO. Rentals instead of a hotel. Guess what? I love this program. For a few bucks more you can get a condo with all the comforts of home. It was a last minute booking and they upgraded us to a two bedroom penthouse unit. A couple of advantages. If you get hungry at night, just go to the kitchen and microwave a snack. Coffee anytime you want it, and if the weather turns bad, you're not trapped in a single room. Just a note, weather was fabulous. We had two balconies to watch the sun rise, or to just have a cup of coffee in the morning. Our building was waterfront so it was a very short walk to the beach. They have a pool also for those who prefer a pool instead. We used both the beach and the pool. The complex is gated so it's pretty secure. They provide beach chairs and umbrellas at no additional cost. There's a supermarket just up the road so we stocked up on food and snacks for the weekend before checking in. Overall it was FABULOUS and we already have plans to go back in the winter. Just for the record I'm really starting to hate snow.. Sorry. I suggest Amelia Island Surf & Racket for your next Florida vacation, you will not regret. Just do me a favor , don't go in February, that's when I'm going and I don't want to lessen my odds of getting that penthouse unit again.

Once we find a unit we like we tend to get it year after year. We like it because of the great beach. The city has changed the rules in the last couple of years and we now have to carry our shade down each day and take it down each night, but it is worth the trouble. The staff was especially helpful this year in finding a unit that allowed us to take our son and daughter-in-law and grandchildren.

My family and I used to love coming here for years…read more There have been rule changes over the past few years and most recently there was a poolside dress code implemented. My sister and I were dressed in average bikinis for women in our early 20s (nothing too cheeky or revealing but skin was showing). Staff were very quick to politely tell us we were not up to dress code. The staff was polite about it, but the rule itself is old fashioned and not at all with the times. As a young woman its NEAR IMPOSSIBLE to find a quality modest bikini that doesnt show a little butt. Out of touch rules that disproportionately affect women. Very disappointing to see the sexist turn the ocean club has made.

Amelia Island Plantation is a 1,350-acre Florida beach resort. At the resort there are acres of villas, a 3.5 mile strip of private beach and they are completing a second hotel by the end of 2012. The resort does offer a shuttle service so it is easy to get around the resort without jumping into your car. The resort provides many amenities including a spa, gym, hotel pool, restaurants, tennis courts, golf, a few shops. I used the spa during our visit and was disappointed at the lack of amenities at the spa. I was expecting to spend several hours at the spa, but there was no jacuzzi hot tub, steam room or dry sauna so once my spa service was finished I just showered and left. The spa should reduce their prices if they are not going to provide any of these typical spa amenities. I also worked out at the resort's fitness center during my stay. The gym was small, but had a decent selection of weight machines and the cardio equipment included built in tv sets. The locker room amenities were pretty much nonexistent so I ended up not showering in the locker room and took the shuttle back to my room so I could shower there instead. Overall, we had a nice and relaxing vacation and enjoyed being lazy and getting room service, but the area was just a little too quiet for my taste. I would only consider returning to the Amelia Island Plantation if they update and remodel the facilities on-site.

Ornate, luxurious, top notch service, everything you'd expect from a Ritz property…read more Lobby bar - A beautiful living room for hanging out during the day. We arrived at the Ritz too late for dinner anywhere but the lobby bar. Enjoyed several sushi rolls with drinks, each one imaginative fresh and tasty. But some event had recently let out and the lobby bar got crowded and LOUD. I mean over 100db loud (measured). That's the equivalent of enjoying sushi while jackhammers are crushing concrete all around you. Whoa! Ocean front one bedroom suite - Plush, large, comfortable. Curtains blocked most light, but the bright morning sun still peeked in around the edges. Comfortable bed and plenty cold for good sleeping. Two huge TVs. While the only premium feed provided is Netflix, the cable box had been lowered behind the TV in the living room such that it was simple to plug in your own device. If this is by design, kudos to the Ritz. If this was accidental, we feel very fortunate. Awesome to have a second half bath, wish that was an option at more hotels. The main bath, very roomy, with a huge dressing area, was a little odd in that, while there was a door to the toilet, there was no door to the tub/shower. Not a big deal, as it was around a corner providing a little privacy, it's still a weak design decision. Huge balcony with ocean front views that go on forever. A few chairs and a table, but a bit under furnished. Still quite a treat for the view, breeze and privacy. Never even slightly tempted to leave the property during our stay. Over a 4 night stay, we visited nearly every bar and restaurant option, and never felt like we were having to "make do". Pool - the kiddie pool was closed for renovations, so children took over the main pool all day. If you're not a tolerant direct parent, you're not gonna get in that water, if you know what I mean. Overall the pool and chairs were pretty crowded, so almost worth the premium to have rented a cabana for 8-2 one day. Lots more room and comfort, both lounge chairs and couch seating, TV, snacks and drinks.

In our experience, hotels usually designate "dog friendly" rooms that are often in undesirable locations of the hotel. We did not feel that way here. There were dogs everywhere! Prob just as many dogs as kids!!! Check in was a bit rough...our room was not ready till about an hour after check in time. We were exhausted from a short night of sleep and delayed plane ride --just wanted to get to our room. We had to check on the status twice. Not what we expected!! The second person we talked to was very friendly and apologetic. They said they would comp us for the trouble by reducing the daily charge but I never saw this on my bill. This was disappointing. I was surprised they said they would do that so maybe they tried but weren't allowed. Who knows! The rooms were fine - nothing fancy and a bit outdated. Everything was very clean tho. And the beds were very comfortable. We enjoyed the nice coffee station and fire table on our patio. The restaurants they have are pretty good. We really enjoyed getting room service - much easier with our pup. We stopped by the gym to fill up our water bottles and they have a great water station and fruit bowls. All of the staff we interacted with were lovely and friendly. They were happy to give us tips about the area and recommendations too. The location is unbeatable- right on the beach. We enjoyed morning walks to see the sunrise. And it's close to Fernandina Beach which was such a charming area. We would def stay here again!!!!

This is a three story structure and it can get full quickly. We were there for 5 days and we watched folks check in and out for a typical weekend type of stay. Apparently, in looking at their booking calendar, they get and stay booked through the summer, so book early. We stayed on the first level in the A2 unit. The entire unit is tri-plex style with twin entries for the pairs of condo adjacent each other. The unit is almost shotgun style, but you do not have to actually go through each room to get to the next. As you enter, the master is immediately off to the right, then the heating/cooling unit, a second bathroom, and then laundry. The hallway opens to a small dining area and a second bedroom off to the right followed by the kitchen. The second bedroom had a full size bed and an older television. The master had a more updated flat screen television and a king sized bed. The bed had a pillow top attached and we comfortably firm. The master also has an on-suite bathroom and a pretty roomy closet that had a roll-out cot to sleep one more if you must. The kitchen area is pretty nice size and it is open concept into a small living space that has a sofa, love seat, a 50in+ flat screen, with dvd player and cable hookup. There is also Wi-Fi from the same cable provider. Cannot complain about the connectivity at all except that cell service is spotty in the entire area including by the beach. You need to simply walk a bit until you have bars. The kitchen has the basics; coffee maker, cutting board, pots and pans, stoneware, utensils, cups, glasses, etc. There are stools and a nice place for a quick bit as well. As for the experience... The unit is decorated nicely and it was clean with towels and toilet basics stocked. When we arrived, the AC was on and the unit was extremely inviting. Through the back sliding door, this unit opens directly to the beach! Yes, directly. One of the things I found most relaxing, was to have coffee while listening and watching the waves of the Atlantic. Very nice indeed. One of the main things to love about this place is that they are pet lovers. We had our three pups with us and that was really nice. They had never been to the beach before. Two of the three enjoyed the water, while the older pup was having none of it. We did use the TV and DVD. All was in working order. There are a plethora of RedBox rental boxes all over nearby and seem to be pretty well stocked. The sofa and loveseat have seen better days. I have a bad hip and the sofa had me working out my core pretty good getting up from it. Or should I write, getting out of it. I sank pretty good in it. I don't know if it is a common occurrence, but the folks who were staying in the unit above us spent a lot of time walk, or marching, their elephant. Wow, were they loud. Hopefully our next trip there will have softer footed neighbors. The area is a really nice foodie destination. Who knew. Kenny Gilbert's restaurant is on the island and there are some really nice niche places to eat. The unit's owner was pleasant and professional to deal with. We had no issues at all here and I am sure that we will return to this exact condo the next time we want to get away.

A cheap hotel is better maintained at a fraction of the price - see pictures. Unresponsive when issues arise - check. Their manager pulled over to text us but could not call us, neither have the Dunlops to date despite multiple attempts. Their employees are leaving them - check. We were told that 2 cleaning people left in the last week and the service person was shocked at the maintenance of our unit. The properties they rent are not safe - check. Our unit had one functioning smoke detector from 2005, exposed wires in the shower, unsecured shower doors and other safety issues. If you don't care about safety, the Dunlops and AIV have you covered! Overall, this is not how to run a business but how to take advantage of people who are on vacation. There are plenty of reputable rental and management companies on Amelia Island and Amelia Island Vacations is not one of them. Do your homework before you put your money, trust and safety in a rental. If I were to do it again on Amelia Island, I would stay away from this group. The unit's bathrooms were dirty (pubic hairs) and 2 rolls of toilet paper (total) for 4 days equals an inexcusable oversight by cleaning crews. 'MAYBE' recommendation: based on whether or not they can step up their professionalism because the unit legitimately boasts an ocean view, no argument there.
