An hour and a half isn't enough time for a tasting? After sitting in the large open tasting room, we engaged in conversation with her about the wines and the winery. When asked how she got into the business and started working at Hilt, she said she just wanted something that she didn't hate, and had applied for the job a couple months ago. When we asked about the white wine they had, she mentioned its tannins. Tannins in white wine? Given that we were only interested in trying the whites and the majority on the tasting menu were reds, we decided to try a glass of the white on offer instead of doing the tasting. The pour was about 2 ounces. It's too bad that the service was so impersonal and uneducated because the winery and the wines seemed so impressive. We would have loved to learn more but decided to cut our losses and leave.

It's windy, narrow, and steep. Poor June was car sick from the drive. While the drive had some great views, we were anxious to get to Cambria. Upon arrival we noticed that the tasting room was uphill from the vineyards, providing a great view. I will say that the tasting room was cut into a little crevice so the views from the deck are limited. However, there is a beautiful private tasting area on a hill (when you turn into the winery parking lot) that would be a fantastic spot for good views. The wine was nice, plenty of variety. And I appreciated the unique guidance of wines from the staff. By providing your preferred wines and notes they will create a personal tasting menu. We also opted for the charcuterie for 2 which was perfect. Plenty of bites to accompany our tasting. Because wine is so unique it's always difficult to review, so I prefer to focus on the experience as a whole, and Cambria nailed it. We would definitely return and hang out by their fireplace. I arranged for the ATV tour for my husband and I around noon, but encountered unexpected traffic on our way up from LA so our arrival time for our tour got delayed. Our tour guide Morrie was thankfully flexible and understanding with our late arrival and was welcoming when we finally arrived. After driving through lots of farmland, we arrive to The Gatehouse (the tasting room). It is a beautiful building with large windows looking out to the vineyards. It has such a relaxing vibe. Since it was a gorgeous day, we decided to settle our (high school and college) kids down at a table in the outdoor patio with lunch. After taking a few quick bites of our sandwiches so we had something in our stomachs before we started our tasting tour, we were on our way. Morrie is also the sommelier for Bien Nacido so not only was he was well versed in the history of the Bien Nadico vineyard, he was also very familiar with the wines and grapes and was very informative and we learned quite a lot. He took us up and down and all around the vast property and we were told about how Bien Nacido grows grapes for other wineries and that they lease out their land to other local growers for vegetables, fruits, etc. During our time there, we tasted the Rose, Chardonnay, a couple different Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Everything tasted great, but the Syrah was a bit intense for me personally. Morrie even picked some grapes off the vines for us to try. My husband and I really enjoyed our visit and left with way more than we planned to buy, and since we had so much fun, we made our college kid drive us to our hotel. We were greeted by Jordan, a friendly, informative, and helpful wine enthusiast. Jordan provided details of the grape, year/ season, and descriptions on each wine's flavor and suggested pairing. We learned a bit of history of Bien Nacido and the popularity of the grapes. We opted to do both tastings, estate and black label to fully experience their wines. Jordan started us off with a rose, well balanced and dry, perfect for hot summer days. Our favorites were the GSM blend, smooth, full flavor and the black label Syrah, full-body with notes of berries, and nice depth. We are so glad we took advantage of the FP perk and visited Bien Nacido, with a couple bottles of GSM and Rose in hand.

We've celebrated almost every major milestone here, and it has always felt like a second home. Watching the winery evolve while staying true to its roots has been incredible. One of the things we always loved about Sanford was the winemaking style under Steve Fennell. When Trey Fletcher took over, I'll admit we were a little hesitant. It's hard to see change at a place that means so much to you. But wow, Trey has absolutely won us over. The wines have evolved, but they still capture everything that makes Sta. Rita Hills special. There's a clear Burgundy influence, with thoughtful whole-cluster use that adds complexity and structure, but the wines never lose their sense of place. They still showcase the vibrant fruit, acidity, and character of the region while maintaining the backbone to age beautifully. Of course, great wine is only part of the story. The hospitality team has always been fantastic, and every visit feels warm and welcoming. Whether you've been coming for decades like we have or it's your first visit, Sanford has a way of making you feel at home. There are plenty of great wineries in the Sta. Main tasting room but as it was beautiful out, we needed the experience outside. First off, Both Neil and Lynn were absolute dolls. They started us off with some crisp bubbly, perfect for the wether. Both were the sweetest and so easy to talk too. It was like we were already friends and popping over for a chat. During our experience, Lynn took over and made sure that we were here for an enjoyment. And let me say, it was AMAZING.... She was the funniest and sweetest person. Laughing and smiling while making sure that each and every tasting was explained and enjoyed. To add to the experience, a charcuterie board was served. The selection of cheese, meats and sides added to the tasting. Can't go wrong with it. Staring off with the reds, let's just say there were none that needed the dump bowl. Everything was so rich, bold and full body and flavorful. One after the other, the wines were excellent. And finishing off, it was the white. Normally you start with whites and work to the reds but their version, it was good. Bottle after bottle was amazing with each pour. The explanation of each was so helpful.
