We weren't really sure what to expect, but when we walked in, there were about 8 men standing around the bar with one guy behind the bar. I'm always a little intimidated walking in to a pub I don't know, that kinda looks like it would be an old mans pub, being a woman, it's just not something I do. But with my boyfriend by my side, I can do anything but walking in to Auld Hoose, I felt the most comfortable I've felt walking in to a pub in a long time. The guy behind the bar was super friendly, served us our drinks and was very chatty with the patrons. He was cracking jokes with everyone and it just had an overall feel of being part of something. This pub was definitely my favourite out of all the pubs we went in to while in Perth. It had the feel the mix of Ben Nevis in Finneston and Three Judges in Partick. A lamington is a plain sponge cake, covered in chocolate sauce and then coconut. This was a chocolate brownie covered in coconut. It didn't even taste very good. I'll admit this is my second proper visit here - I first visited when I moved to the UK for Australia Day. That was a terrible, terrible mistake so whatever you do, avoid this pub on the 26th of January. As for every other day of the year? Well, it's up to you, of course. The food was worth the lack of atmosphere: good prices, special offers and always filling. However, it is a place that is best enjoyed in the evenings, as it is making a real effort to offer something different for Shawlands. Monday night has a computer game tournament, and there is live music from Thursday through to Sunday- Sunday being an open mic night, that usually serves up some local comedy. Friday and Saturday see it turn into a trendy pub, with a graduate aged crowd: busy, but the screens have Sex and the City all Friday night and the atmosphere is lively and safe. The actual fittings are swish: this has been a comedy venue in the past, and retains some of that cool atmosphere. The last time I went in, it still had canvases of comedians up on high. It's also possible to escape the crowds by going to their balcony. At the least, it gives a clear view of the action downstairs. The bands are local and mostly do covers. Saturday is blues night, there is a DJ on the Tuesday evening, with cocktails on special.
