We stumbled upon this permanent roadside market when traveling between central Virginia and…read moreClarksburg, West Virginia -- and while trying to avoid roads that would put us into harm's way given the winter weather advisory for the mountains of WV. Snow of up in 8" in April?! There were a lot of cars in the small parking lot -- which is always a good sign. There was also a sign for a deli which gave us hope that we could pick up a late lunch. Better than that, they had a grill! We ordered a quick lunch -- one bacon cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato, one chili cheese hot dog, one bag of Walnut Creek cheddar and sour cream potato chips (2.25 oz), and a bottle of Kutztown birch beer (24 oz) -- all for $11 something, including tax but before tip. There are two community tables, one of which we shared with Ernie, a local, who gave us great advice on which roads to avoid for our onward travels. The shop is worthy of a longer browse. They seem to have a bit of everything. For instance, fruits and vegetables, refrigerator cases with milk, homemade macaroni or tuna salads, fresh deli items, cast iron frying pans, hardware store items, phone charging plugs, greeting cards, and so much more. Staff were also very friendly. We ordered at the counter, and our hot items were brought to our table. We self-selected the soda and chips from the floor. You need to pay only when it's time to leave.

We get fresh locally grown vegetables and also the occasional fried ham sandwich. Everyone who works here is super friendly and helpful. This is definitely the go-to spot in the Lost River Valley for those of us who live here and also the adventurers who come out for the wild and wonderful Bed-and-Breakfast experiences.

If you're gonna drive an hour and a half away from your home to go to a butcher in rural Strasburg…read moreVirginia, you're gonna buy a lot of meat. And if you're gonna buy that much meat I suggest to you two things. 1. Bring a cooler 2. Control yourself When we got into that butcher room, I felt like I was a kid in a candy shop. I think I might have just given a vegetarian a heart attack, but honestly.... The prices, the selection, the freshness. If your gonna want to indulge in some meaty goodness (which I have been trying to limit more and more), might as well do it with gusto. Jason, our butcher that day was a meat magician! Perhaps, one might say... a meatgician. Yes, there was no way to get through a review of a butcher without making one or a dozen different things sound dirty; but bear with me. He gave us the run down of the briskets. He trimmed A LOT of fat off this one brisket so that we could purchase a lighter piece of meat. He told us all about the aged meats, their sausages, their scrapple, and how they make their hamburgers and how it was different then a regular supermarket. I BELIEVE it was their hamburgers that were leaner (90 - 10). In any event, Jason was kind, informative, and just a general pleasure to be served by. So far we've eaten a few pieces of meat from crabills. The ribeye was spectacular, the NY Strip was enjoyed by a coworker of mine, and the brisket in T's words was "Fresh AF." The only thing that really wasn't to my taste was the scrapple. For me it lacked seasoning and punch, as compared to the scrapples I've had before. Overall, if you're looking to stock up on meats, and want to take a short/long journey out 66 to Strasburg; I'd DEFINITELY suggest stopping by crabills. Just remember my two suggestions: 1. Bring a cooler 2. Control yourself Oh, and they have other local products too ( jams/jellies etc.) AND They have 2 birch beers! Obviously they took my extra credit assignment seriously. I'd much suggest the one in the bottle (Kutz-something) vs the canned one (Unless you're a diehard anise fan). Don't know many of those, but I'm sure they exist.

Caution: Sales Associates in this store treat customers like thieves…read more The Primo water bottle collection site in front of the store has been broken for at least 5 years. When you return empty bottles, the machine does NOT provide a return ticket. On several occasions, my husband has been asked by the lead Sales Associate for his exchange ticket. We have briefly interacted with this lovely woman for years; however, the fact is she knows the Primo machine does not provide exchange tickets when she's asking you for the ticket. On another occasion, a younger Sales Associate did the same thing and then told my husband they are trying to make sure people are being honest. We cannot drink our well water and purchase Primo exchange bottles at Food Lion routinely. To avoid this accusatory encounter, I have now resorted to self-checkout. To do so, simply search for the product by typing "Primo" and select the 5 gallon exchange. The lead Sales Associate will still give judgmental looks, but she can't do anything about self-checkout personal accountability. The honor system does not work if you're going to routinely accuse your customer base of theft. Fix the Primo exchange machine and then you will fix the problem.
