I hired Ken to take pictures of my dogs. No, I'm serious. Stop laughing. Yes Ken takes amazing photos of gorgeous couples, happy weddings, and elaborate sunsets complete with bikini clad models HOWEVER I believe the true talent of a photographer is to capture the essence of their subject. A model will usually pose and a happy couple will generally have a genuine smile.... but a puppy? TWO puppies? Have you ever tried to take a picture of a puppy? I mean a good picture. One that captures their inquisitive nature and that mischievous glint in their eye? The puppies are jet black, so a lot of the time they get washed out with regular digital cameras and their faces get lost...especially their eyes. But with Ken's lighting and his crazy super camera he really made them POP. Ken was able to capture my puppies in such an artistic way that I was blown away. I'm serious, the pictures were so amazing I had random people on FB use them as their PROFILE PIC! I did say they were MY puppies didn't I? Well they're not. I was fostering them for a rescue called Stella's Hope. I explained this to Ken because with amazing photos I could advertise them more and get the word out about them since black dogs are so often overlooked on Petfinder. Ken was very kind to them and was so easy to work with that I felt comfortable the entire time and so did the precious fur babies. The pups came from a hoarding situation when they were just 2 weeks old with their scared mama. They were terrified, sick, and starving but with a little love and kindness morphed into the two gorgeous beasts you see in the photos! So thank you Ken for these amazing pictures. Shortly after I posted Ken's pics all over the Internet.... I was compelled to write this review because guess what???? They were BOTH adopted into the SAME house this past week. Ken is the best photographer you can ever wish for. He is also literally the nicest person I've ever met (and you'll probably feel the same way if you get a chance to meet him). He did our engagement and wedding photos, all of them turned out to be amazing. He is very creative, always full of great ideas. He explained his shooting plans and gave suggestions customized to our requirements. I sent him my Pinterest boards of engagement/wedding photos, he was able to immediately get what style we like and take photos accordingly. During the photo sections, he made us laugh all the time, we didn't feel nervous or awkward as people usually do in front of a camera. On the wedding day, Ken and his assistant arrived at the venue one hour earlier to find the perfect spots and take test shots. He planned everything carefully, and paid attention to even the smallest detail. For example, he figured out the best route I should take to walk to the spot where we take first-look photos, so I don't need to walk too far in my high heels. He managed time well so we stay on schedule the entire day; he also magically managed the crowd so we were able to take photos of just us in quite and romantic settings. Full disclosure: I have known Ken through mutual friends and knew he was a photographer, so when my wife and I wanted to do a family photo shoot, Ken was one of the first people we asked. However, I still looked him up on Yelp and was validated by all the 5-star reviews he received. Throughout the process Ken was very professional and accommodating. He recommended a couple of neighborhood parks where we could do the shoot and the park we ended up at was a great location. I knew that he had done a photo shoot earlier that day and had a wedding the next day, but you wouldn't know it from the enthusiasm he had during the entire shoot. He was very adept at combining his expertise and suggestions with what we envisioned for the session. Ken was also very good with my 4 month old son who managed to stay happy for the duration of the shoot. We felt comfortable the entire time and never felt rushed or pushed into doing things we didn't want to do. Two days after the session Ken emailed us a few sneak preview shots to hold us over until he completed our photos. We loved them and it only left us wanting more. A few weeks later he sent us a link to his site that hosts all of the photos from the shoot. We were extremely pleased with how the photos came out. They were amazing! He even dropped off our photos on DVD since he was passing by that day. I like that we have the freedom to do whatever we want with our photos under our agreement. My wife and I hired Ken to photograph our daughter with our dog to use on our Christmas cards. Because these photos were going to all of our friends and family, we really wanted them to capture the personality of our daughter (and the dog's, too) while reflecting the spririt of our household (since we were not in the pictures). We hired Ken to do our engagement and wedding photos. That was probably on of the best decisions we've made! Pre- Engagement Photos We found out about Ken, through one of our mutual friends. Prior to taking our engagement photos, we met up with Ken to get to know him more before we hired him. Right away, he was so friendly, intelligent, knew what he was talking about and just easy going. Right after our meeting with him, I told my (now) husband, that I definitely liked him and wanted to hire him. Engagement Photos: My husband and I didn't know where we should take our engagement photos at first, but I told Ken kind of how I wanted it to be (ie. fields, fences, etc.) He knew just where to take us! and it was perfect! I met Ken about a year ago in a friend-of-a-friend situation and casually friended him on Facebook. I have been using Yelp religiously for the past 4 years. I've found everyone from my accountant to dentist on Yelp. My experience with Ken Pfeifer finally made me want to write my first review! Ken, who I also found on Yelp, took my 1 yr old's pictures back in August. Throughout the entire process Ken was extremely easy and flexible to work with. We originally had the photo shoot scheduled for a Friday evening. My son hadn't slept all day and I feared he'd be cranky for his pictures. So one hour before Ken was supposed to arrive I called him to see if we could reschedule. I was convinced that we'd have to pick another weekend which would be difficult because I live in San Francisco and only come to OC every 6 weeks or so. But he completely understood and was so accommodating even though he had 2 other shoots scheduled for that weekend! We settled on meeting on Sunday early morning instead. When we first started discussing my son's shoot he offered to bring some balloons and cake for my little guy to dig into during the shoot which I thought was so sweet. On top of that he wasn't going to charge for it. I figured since we rescheduled for early sunday morning, he wouldn't be able to get them. Nope, I was wrong. He came with a beautiful bouquet of balloons and a cake! Now on to the pictures. Unfortunately, my son was still cranky during the shoot even after rescheduling. Ken completely let us take our time throughout the shoot, but I was still convinced we wouldn't have that many great pictures because of his mood. I was wrong again! Ken sent our pictures within a week and there were at least a 100 pictures that I loved. I almost wished I didn't like that many because it became so hard to choose my favorites! (Written post-shoot and before I have proofs in my hands because I couldn't wait to go Yelping!:) I met Ken just under a year ago while photographing some landscapes and macro shots in the Earl Burns Japanese Gardens at CSULB. We've kept in touch mostly via Facebook since then, and I've had the pleasure of catching glimpses of his work and world through his eyes and lens, quietly admiring his immense talent. As my friends have been getting engaged and pregnant in droves (rabbits!!!), I'm all too happy and quick to offer up a link to his webpage and Yelp! page. Most of them are on a smaller budget basis (read: "Know anyone with a DSLR and a free Saturday?") so it usually takes some work on my end to convince them that a DSLR simply does not a photographer make! (rant) Any monkey can buy a big lens, press a button, and apply a few filters in post, but only a great photographer can capture just the right moment, be it posed or candid. And seriously, I've seen the prices of his packages, and for what you get in time (both in shoot duration & production turn-around brevity), quantity, and quality - he's an absolute steal. Go ahead and compare, but you're just wasting your time. (/rant) I stumbled upon a competition for a walk-on role for the TV show Mad Men, and being a long-time fan, I decided to throw my hat into the ring - and I figured if that doesn't work out, at least I'll walk away with a bunch of sweet pictures (who doesn't want a bunch of retro pics like the ones you see in your grandparents' photo albums?!) because I knew exactly who to book. A quick call to Ken with an immediate response had me booked within the week and he even hunted down a hair and make-up artist to help me get just the right look. (See review for: Jane Oh Kim at "glamOh makeup") Ken was in constant communication with me during the week leading up to the shoot - offering examples of poses I might want to practice, ideas for "scenes," and updates on some retro props he had found to use. My particular shoot called for an indoor setting, and Ken just so happens to have a full studio set up in his living room, complete with a backdrop, multiple lighting stands, and plenty of space. The house is also in a great neighborhood and super clean, so it's totally not a sketchy "Sure, I'll take your pictures, just come to my house, Baby..." kind of thing {{{shutters}}} ---see what I did there? Ah-hem... I rolled up at 6pm, and Ken was ready to help me cart in all the props and wardrobe change stuff I brought (including a large chest of drawers). When I walked in, Jane was already set up in the kitchen for hair and face, and Ken was fast at work setting up lighting. While Jane made me purdy, Ken ran out to grab food to make sure we ate (I was all "Whaa--- models eat?"). As the shoot began, Ken pulled up some Mad Men pictures on his iPad that we could try to emulate, and had plenty of poses in mind as well. Though sometimes with descriptive noises (for poses and emotions that really have no words, srsly), his direction to the model is clear. As much as I was having a hard time relaxing my posture and my furrowed brow, his patience never wavered and he remained a positive coach. I walked in a little uneasy with how low-cut one of my dresses was, but not once did I feel uncomfortable in front of him and the camera - he's not one to gawk, which is nice. Two wardrobe changes, probably ten different pose approaches, and more than two hours later, Ken also offered plenty of advice on how I could market my pictures to win the contest before helping me out the door. I had a great time at my shoot tonight and can't wait to see the proofs (which I'll apparently have a code for in my Inbox in the morning!) - the teasers that he's sent me via text within the hour of leaving his place have me really excited! ...to be continued... (The Turn-Around and Results!:) I awoke the next morning to find a link to SmugMug with all 173 photos from my shoot password protected & awaiting my selection! After sharing the link with a few family & friends and asking them for their top ten shots, a geeky spreadsheet compilation determined that the photo Ken had texted me the night prior was the hands-down favorite (surely, a testament to his instinctual eye). I shot Ken an email letting him know what my contest entry would be, and which other 4 photos I would like edited, and by the following morning, the Finished Product was in my Inbox, and the edits are nothing short of AMAZING!!! This review has been a long time coming. Ken photographed our wedding in Temecula, CA back in May 2012 and we could not have been happier with the results! We also used him for our engagement photos. Ken could not have been more professional. He listened to our requests, made many helpful suggestions, helped us feel comfortable with the whole picture taking process, and always responded promptly to the many emails I sent him. He was also happy to accommodate the many props we brought along for our engagement shoot (including a giant yellow balloon and a scooter). Once the photos have been taken, Ken sets up a private online gallery so you, friends, and family can look through the pictures. The gallery lets you mark the "favorites" you want Ken to edit. Ken's editing skills are top notch. He even seamlessly swapped faces on a couple photos so that everyone's eyes were open in the same photo, giving us a perfect family picture! As another reviewer said, Ken takes so many great photos, it's impossible to pick just a handful of favorites. We actually couldn't do it. Instead of marking 50 wedding photos for edits, I think we marked something like 80 photos and let Ken pick the ones that could be "improved" the most with touch-ups :) We also had Ken design a leather-bound photo book that turned out gorgeous and was worth every penny! Ken is AWESOME!!! So i was in a hurry to find a good photographer in less than 2 weeks and i happen to find him on yelp and facebook. Emailed him and he emailed me back the same day. I'm overdue in writing a review for Ken but I cannot say enough great things about him. Based on my Yelp search and the rave reviews he had, I hired him to do corporate head shots (and a few "dating profile" photos!) and he absolutely lived up to the reviews. First and foremost, he was able to produce some photos that I was really happy with - a feat, considering I hate having my picture taken and think they all look terrible - and he really took the time and went above and beyond to ensure that I had a lot of photos to choose from. WOW WOW WOW! My husband found Ken doing some research online (Yelp and others) to find our wedding photographer. From our first consultation, we both loved his easygoing demeanor and were impressed by his portfolio (what you see online doesn't do him justice). And it just got better from there. We LOVED working with him for our engagement shoot (he was so adaptable, from helping us find the perfect location to including our son and dog) and couldn't believe how wiling he was to do anything to get the perfect shots for us - climbing trees, fighting off ants, you name it! I would give a 6th star if I could. We did our engagement photos with Ken yesterday in Los Angeles, he's amazing. He sent us a sneak peak early this morning of a photo of us at the LACMA Urban Lights, the photo is stunning. If you looked at the photo and then met us, you likely say "I knew these two people would be like this" Ken captured our personalities to a t. "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" Yelp says this is the definition of the ideal experience, but I don't think it's enough to describe what you get with Ken. We hired Ken for our engagement shoot after having looked at five or six dozen photographers... he had the "wow" factor we'd been waiting for. There were some pretty serious logistical issues to overcome (long story) in order to set up the shoot, but Ken literally bent over backwards to make it work. I'm not the most comfortable person in front of a camera, but most of the shoot I ended up forgetting I was on camera.. it felt like hanging out with one of those new friends who you know will be an old friend, someday. Ken has the most natural, relaxed, professional manner of any photographer I've ever dealt with, and -- guess what -- he's also a phenomenal technician. The pictures turned out better than we could have hoped, a true expression of ourselves. The only regret we had is that we couldn't hire Ken to shoot our wedding, too -- if I ever need a photographer again, Ken will be my first call. I've been working on writing this review for a while now, trying to think of how to best describe Ken, his work, and my experience with him. I guess, all I can say is, "Perfect". Honestly. Everything about it was absolutely and completely PERFECT. I got married about 3 weeks ago at the Villa in San Juan Capistrano. I meticulously designed, planned and organized everything for my wedding/reception myself, so when it came to finding a photographer, I knew exactly what I was looking for, and I did A LOT of research. I looked at the knot website, checked out bridal magazines, got referrals from friends, etc. etc., but all I found were overpriced and over-hyped photographers with nothing special to bring to the table. I decided to seek the advice of my go-to guide for absolutely everything, Yelp. I found Ken's page, and, when I saw how great his reviews were and how close he was to where I lived, I decided to check out his website. I spent over an hour looking through his all his galleries, going through his blog, reading his profile and my first impression was "WOW. I NEED to call this guy." He was very prompt in getting back to me right away, was extremely flexible as far as my wants and needs were concerned, and set up an appointment for us to meet in person at my earliest convenience. Everything about his vibe and photographic style and personality fit me to a tee and we were completely on the same page as far as the atmosphere I wanted to create with my wedding. He was extremely outgoing and obviously passionate about his work, and I could tell that he genuinely cared about what I wanted. He was the first photographer I met with, and I booked him same day. We stayed in contact for all the weeks/months leading up the wedding, going over any questions/concerns I had, throwing ideas back and forth. I knew that I was going to be a big ball of stress on my wedding day, but he put me at ease because I knew, as far as the photography was concerned, I had nothing to worry about-all I had to do was be happy and enjoy my day-he would take care of everything else. Day of: Was I anxious? Yes. I'm running around like a chicken with it's head cut off, turning this 10 degrees clockwise and shifting that 3/4" of an inch over and generally being a belabored perfectionist. He arrived right on time, set up his equipment and began snapping away at all the little details and capturing the all the subtleties I'd taken such care to create. The moment he showed up in the bridal suite to take the shots of me and my bridal party getting ready, he told me "This is the most beautiful wedding I think I've ever shot." Stress gone. How? Who knows. He must be magic (or maybe it was his corny jokes or the off-beat banter), because from that point, I was all smiles. From the moment I walked down the aisle to our getaway car, from the first dance to the last, from the formal portraits to the crazy reception, he was there, capturing moments of time with his camera. Less than 2 weeks later I get my proofs. INCREDIBLE. Every picture was a work of art. The way he caught the light, the shadows, the angles and framing...everything was intentional and inspired. And the expressions and the emotions he was able to capture are beyond priceless. He caught moments that even I forgot about. Even if he did no retouching, I would still be thrilled with the result. Bottom line: some photographers shoot to make a living, but Ken lives to shoot. He created the most beautiful mementos of the biggest day of my life, and I can't thank him enough for doing such a phenomenal job. If I ever have an opportunity to work with him again, I will LEAP a the chance. Please, please, please, if you are looking for a photographer, he is your man. Trust me. read more

Simply put, Ken is an artist. If you want to work with someone who has an incredible eye, patience and an abundance of creative ideas you should hire him without hesitation. I highly recommend Ken Pfeifer for any photography need. He shot my wedding last year and I am extremely pleased with my photos. His work is comprehensive in that he incorporates variety in his shots. I've seen so many collections of wedding pictures that are basically the same style in every shot. That gets boring. My wedding pictures have so many different feels to them. Ken did a great job of making each picture unique and beautiful. He definitely has an eye for taking great shots. I shot a wedding with Ken Pfeifer last year. He was super easy going and very professional, an all around great individual. Ken is soft spoken and polite, never pushy or demanding of his clients. He has a very strong work ethic and gives his all for every photo shoot. Just take a look at his photography portfolio, the amazing images speak for themselves. He has a great eye and is able to capture the small details that capture the emotions of the people and the day so well. Each photo has it's own story to tell. As I'm sitting here looking at pictures from our wedding, I can't help but smile and think back on that wonderful day. And I'm able to do this because Ken and Will (second shooter) captured every moment and emotion of that day. We knew right from the start that Ken was the right photographer. I had sent Ken an email about his rates and availability and he literally sent me a reply within minutes. Promptness...check! As a stressed out bride, it is so important to have vendors that are able to get back to you promptly. After looking over his pictures and rates with my husband, we both felt good about booking Ken for our wedding. And boy, am I glad we did! The weeks and days leading up to our wedding, Ken periodically checked in with us to see how we were doing. On our wedding, Ken and Will were wonderful! For the traditional wedding pictures, Ken came up with poses that didn't seem stiff or forced (I hate having my picture taken so this was very important). The candid shots turned out beautiful. I don't know how they did it but it seems like they were able to photograph everyone and everything that was taking place. Overall, Ken is an honest and caring photographer who really enjoys capturing those special moments.
