I love the newly renovated Bandstand at Kelvingrove. I was there on Friday night to watch the Waterboys gig as part of the Magnets Summer Night concerts. It's a wonderful layout for any kind of show and due to the slope of the seating everyone can see pretty well. It is a beautiful venue and makes for a great settling and a lovely vibe in the crowd. I had a couple of wee grips/ tips. Take something padded to sit on, as the benches are solid concert they're pretty hard going. Also if you're reasonable tall like me the height the benches are at feels really low so a bit uncomfortable. I didn't actually go but there seemed to be quite a lack of ladies toilets. These are fairly minor grumbles and I definitely look forward to seeing many more gigs there in the future

Waiting for Echo and the bunnymen

I love being at an outdoor gig, that isn't a festival. I experienced the Kelvingrove bandstand for the first time last night when I went to see echo and the bunnymen. I was so excited about going as I had wanted to go to a gig there since it re-opened. I didn't realise how big it was. I was with friends who had been before and they recommend heading to the front as there were wooden benches at the front, so helped stop your bum getting so cold. I came prepared with blankets but we ended up not needing them. The view was perfect and even when folk stood at the very front you could still see sitting down. The band were great and I think wherever you were in the arena you'd have been able to see. As the gig was going on and I looked up to see the stars in the sky, a big smile came over my face and I thought to myself, it's a shame they don't do more gigs here all year round and then I remembered we live in Scotland and the 2 weeks of "summer" they do have the gigs on is gamble enough for good weather.

Excellent venue for occasional concerts and film screenings. I've been to see Belle and Sebastian, a film screening of Local Hero and a fantastic screening of "from Scotland with Love" with live music from Kong Creosote. Where possible bring a picnic or your own snacks (check if this is allowed via event promotional details) as in house catering stalks can be expensive. it can also turn a little chilly in the evening time!

Great wee park in the West End. Some really nice routes that can go on for miles. Good places to stop. Well kept.

Review Highlights - Kelvingrove Bandstand

It may not be much to look at now, but this Bandstand was once a much loved theatre and music venue in Kelvingrove Park.

Actually, in truth, I may have gotten word that this mission was not optional while en route to Scotland. In any case, there was no way we were going to pass up the opportunity to visit this Glasgow institution (deemed so because a friend of mine once sat next to Brad Pitt here) and partake of their £2 White Russians. There's free wifi to delight your internet-deprived drinking companions and plenty of people watching to be had. Our night was sadly cut short when smoke began to fill the room and I suggested we skedaddle. Once outside we discovered the street in process of being shut down and multiple firetrucks working on extinguishing the fire above. Past its prime Nice n Sleazy certainly is but that doesn't mean you shouldn't also put this bar on your Glasgow to-do list.

I guess, what I'm trying to say is... Hug & Pint, I love you. I've only visited once. It was brief, and I barely sampled your wares. But my gosh, I love you and I am going to keep on coming back for more until you bar me from coming back. I'd never been to the Roxy 171 (oops) but I had been to the Liquid Ship and the layout of the Hug & Pint seems to be similar. Stairs up to the bar area and a nice, relaxed vibe. We got a couple of drinks at the bar and took a seat. It has a cosy vibe without seeming small, and the smell from the kitchen was incredible. I wasn't eating (sadly) but I am going back ASAP for the Asian-inspired vegan menu. There's aubergine on it. Need I say more?! Well, I will. The drinks selection is really good - Thistly Cross cider, Blue Moon, Brooklyn, Innis & Gunn. There's wine, spirits, Aperol and Sam Smith's organic fruit beer. Pretty much what I'm trying to say is that I think the Hug & Pint is perfect. I need to go back for more visits and to try the food, so maybe I'll lose the rose-tinted glasses. But for now, it's a 5-star first-visit love affair. Swoon.

There's a few reasons for that, and while I'm sure there's just something to the atmosphere that's impossible to quantify, these are the things that I think give it at least part of its charm. 1. The whisky. They have a huge selection and they're easily the best place to come for whisky in Finnieston, although most of the bars around here have a few bottles on offer. They staff are very knowledgeable about it, without being snobbish or pushy, and at quieter times are happy to make recommendations and to chat to you about their favourites. 2. It's small. Not in a cramped way but in a cosy way. You can sometimes struggle for a table but it's the kind of place where you feel OK about sharing tables with strangers. The regulars are friendly and are happy for you to pull up a chair 3. When there's music it's fiddles, usually being played by those friendly regulars. I saw an accordion there once but usually it's fiddles being played and being played well - they tend to get involved with the Celtic Connections music festival. 4. It's dog friendly. There's usually one or two dogs running around and the staff are happy to provide a bowl of water for them. So there you have it. Finnieston might be getting awfully fashionable but if that's not your scene it still has one of the least hipster-ish, most traditional whisky pubs in Glasgow and it's a pub that's well worth checking out.

The Old Hairdressers was to be the venue of choice of my friends who are leaving the country to become Vikings well heading to the Scandavian lands. As we entered, the mezzanine was reserved for our pleasure and to enjoy our private wee party. This is the sister venue of Stereo located across the lane but the more I was looking around this place, really it is more like 'heroin chic'. This must be the poorer sister. The walls still showed concrete, plaster and wires, it just looks like they ran out of money and couldn't finish. Some people had added drawings to brighten it up. After staring at one for a while and couldn't figure out what it was, we realised it was builders measurements for something. Doh! The place is very hipster and the music was em... yeah, some kind of electronic instruments clashing. Who knows?! When many people where coming through our mezzanine level we wondered what lay beyond the door. You can't help but have a wee nosey. We discovered toilets and another room for a venue for gigs. It's like a wee tardis this place, I tell thee. They have a no bad selection with local brewers Williams Brothers a-go-go and some tasty fruit ciders available, which they ran out of quickly. Boo! It was a good space for our party, although the music wasn't to our taste, lots of hipsters and running out of fancy fruity cider, it still was a good experience.

Turns out they were setting up for a charity night of some sorts. On any other night I'd have been up for that, but this meeting required chatting and music/talking people in the background was just not an option.... waffle waffle So the place! Well, it's rough, ready, basic... but cool. Limited selection of booze, but at a quick glance it's decent enough with two Williams Bros beers showing up as the stand out options. It's not a massive place with a limited ground level (tiny bar) and a small upstairs mezzanine. Now, this is not a negative comment. In relation to Stereo it's tiny, but somewhere like the Pot Still is somewhat comparble in space and format... but certainly not style! Is it a hipster den? Aye, most likely but to be fair, I can mostly be found donning waistcoats and carrying a vintage satchel these days, so the words kettle, pot, calling and black kind of spring to mind. It needs a return visit, but I shall be doing so!

It was really busy. Pricy at the bar, as has been mentioned elsewhere, but I was on the soft stuff after band practice, really thirsty. Quite a nice warm interior, really trendy, with a good mix of people in there. They have a promiment advertisement for a 2 course lunch just now priced at £6.95 which I might consider, going during the day when it's presumably nowhere near as busy. We dropped by one Tuesday night and ordered a double Southern Comfort and coke and a bottle of Kopparberg. This came to £9.10, which was waaaay more than we had expected. We took a seat in front of the giant football screen to recover from the shock. Up to the minute rock music plays in here, at a comfortable level to talk over. On nice afternoons, the big windows slide open to let the air circulate and provide a nice atmosphere, linking the indoor seating to the outdoor. Live bands play on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The cocktail menu is quite extensive and cocktails are named after rock classics like Purple Haze and Desperado (gotta love The Eagles!!) At £5.95 for the least expensive though, they don't come cheap. The stripped floorboards and warehouse setting further lend to the rocky atmosphere. A small selection of bar bites is available, most intriguingly the "Good Olives" at £1.95 and the "Even Better Olives" also priced at £1.95. Hmmm...what?
