Kelowna International Airport - YLW - Entrance

Kelowna International Airport - YLW

I don't think I've ever been to an airport like this one. When our flight from Vancouver landed…read morehere, we walked half a mile in these tunnel like things that kinda looked like gangways that went back and forth and then suddenly we pop out into the baggage claim. Kinda weird arrival. I like that the baggage claim area is small. They have a couple restaurants (including a Tim Horton) and a rental car desk and then check in is just around the corner. Walking to the rental car pick up wasn't too bad, and the rental car people were surprisingly nice. Welcome to Canada I guess. When it's dark, it's a little hard to see the rental car sign that tells you where to drive to drop off rental cars. The process of parking in the right stall and dropping off the key was easy enough. Air Canada check in should have been easy, but for some reason, our United booking didn't match up to the AC booking, but that's a different story. On our flight out of Kelowna, I was surprised to see that there are like 8 "gates" with 2 ish seating areas. I can see how it can get congested easily if there are multiple flights. We happened to be on the first flight out for the day so security and the waiting area weren't too crowded yet. We got to the airport at 4am for our 6am flight. None of the stores or eateries open until 4:30, so there was a long line for food and coffee at 4:40.

Helter skelter - that's the best way I can describe the airport... Once you get checked in the…read morewaiting area for flights is congested and choked - not a nice way to spend time on a travel day. The Tim Hortons has a very limited menu and the other options are quite pricy. Unfortunately, would not recommend this airport. Spend as little time as you can in the secured area and bring snacks.

Penticton Regional Airport - The small cafe pre-security, that delivers any food/beverage directly to you at the gate once you pass through security with your luggage.

Small little airport at the south end of Okanagan Lake, servicing Penticton, Summerland, Naramata,…read moreand other communities of the southern Okanagan Valley. When I say small, I mean small!! You need to show up MAX 1hr before your flight, and even still, only if you're a keener.. Wait times are at most 10min and the gates are literally right on the other side of the wall as check in. While there's no food or drink options past security, there is a small cafe pre-security screening that will take your order and then they will hand deliver it to you at your gate PAST security. Pretty cool little work around they figured out there. There is a water fill-up station near the gate as well. Only two gates with one toilet available for each men and women. Great views of the tarmac, especially since you walk straight onto the flight deck to board. Air Canada Jazz brings you in on a turboprop De Havilland Q400 from Vancouver which was the easiest way to start having fun on Okanagan Lake.

It's a small airport, so don't expect anything major here. However, that being said, it is…read moreundergoing renovations including enlarging the passenger waiting area. Getting off the plane and delivery of your suitcases is quick and efficient, as is check-in and security. However, there is very little to do at the airport. There's a very small cafe on site pre-security, and nothing after you clear security other than a couple of vending machines and a water fountain. The departure waiting area is spacious enough for a small regional airport, and considering the largest passenger planes scheduled are Dash-8 Q400s. Although there's nice views of the surrounding hills and the airport itself, it would be nice to have somewhere like a cafe to buy a coffee or snack besides the vending machines. One notable downside though that I've experienced on a number of occasions is that it's very difficult to get a taxi outside. There virtually never is any waiting, and when you call it can take a long time for one to be dispatched to you.
