We were looking for a winery that was more outer-suburbs than Yarra Valley, feeling like a splash and a taste but running out of daylight. Kellybrook popped up on Google Maps and away we went. We came from Ringwood way and it's surprising how quickly the industrial outlet strip malls give way to lush greenery as you head towards the winery. The vineyards themselves are stunning as you approach, a myriad of intersecting small hills and slopes dipping down into a little valley.
Inside the friendly server was busy tending to a few small groups and suggested we have a stroll around the grounds for 5-10 mins. Luckily, we were in no rush and could do just that, taking in the quaint but pretty gardens, the highlight being an incredible sprawling tree that a plaque informs us was one of the first planted in this region by settlers.
Back inside we opted for the wine tasting, $5 per person (refundable upon purchase), but there was also the option for beer and cider tasting for the same price. Mellow tunes were filling the air courtesy a record player in the corner as we tasted our way through the day's tasting options, a few others being opened and added when we asked if they were available.
I have to say that Kellybrook ticks almost all the boxes for us - small family winery, beautiful grounds, diverse cellar door products (local cheeses and other goodies too) - which is why it hurts me to say that we just didn't love the wines. The whole range - whites and reds - were generally very soft on the palate, and a little watery for mine - very easy drinking, inoffensive, and probably a perfect entry point for new wine drinkers - but we just wanted a little more grit and spark, being a fan of bigger tasting wines overall. Because of this the wine also seemed a little on the expensive side for what it provided. (Halliday just awarded their Shiraz at 96 points though, so what do I know!)
We left with the sparkling, which was crisp and delicious. (And also a case of cider that was on sale at a cracking great deal). read more
