This review is for this office, which is now run primarily by a Dr. Pham. I saw Dr Cooper a few years ago and I will say he was easy to work with while I was in the chair, but billing was was changing, every visit I was told I needed more and more extensive work done, and one of my payments was never applied. Still he was my "current" dentist and so when I had an emergency after COViD I called his office. He has sold the business to Dr. Pham so that is who my appointment was with. He filed down a tooth WITHOUT TELLING ME. So began my nightmare.... I still trusted Dr Cooper and now had a huge cosmetic issue. He had done an implant for me in the past and I decided to see him for more restorative work. Mistake. I had surgery 6 months ago; my follow ups have been with Dr Pham as doctor Cooper has retired to AZ apparently. Dr. Pham DOES NOT have a the same training to do implants and so far has done two fillings that both failed on me within 2 weeks. One fell out and the other he filled, and I went from zero pain pre filling to a root canal elsewhere the following week. And I was charged for both fillings, no refund no apology... I found a new dentist with a stellar reputation to finish the cosmetic work I have remaining. As soon as I told Dr Pham I wouldn't be continuing at their office he decided I owed over $10k from 6 months ago. No written documentation, no explanation. I said that was 100% false and if he had some sort of proof to send it. Now he says he doesn't really know about it and I should speak to Dr. Cooper (who hasn't contacted me). And I'm still trying to get my patient records. I've spent the price of a car here; Worst experience of my life- zero professionalism and I hope no one else goes through what I did. read more

Years ago I sought the services of Dr. Cooper, as I was not happy with the crowns on my upper front teeth. Dr. Cooper recommended that I replace the posts in my two upper front teeth with gold posts, a procedure done after a root canal. I agreed to the replacement of posts and new crowns. Several years later my dentist found that the roots of my upper front teeth had fractured. After, extraction and implants, a long and costly procedure, I learned that the gold posts were too large causing both teeth to fracture. Also, at the time of my first visit I was told I needed surgery/deep gum cleaning, as I had periodontal disease. He is the only dentist to suggest this type of surgery in my 74 years. read more

As for quality of work. I'm not sure. I guess it's good since he just recently worked on me and he seems to talk about himself really well. As for honesty in giving estimates and billing patients, I'll have to say he fails in my book. Dr. Cooper gave me a quote to compete with another dentist and get my business. Insurance would not cover any of the cost. They gave me a $600 break to get me as a patient. During every visit he tried to get more money out of me by trying to scare me about all the things that could go wrong. When I refused those 'extra' services, at the end of the appointment, they would still have the audactiy to present me for a bill for OTHER 'non-avoidable' work that had to be done. Like a hair dresser that always says the last hair dresser didn't do a good job, Dr. Cooper would tell me that the last dentist didn't do enough of a good job and he had to do extra work. I was fully awake during all of the appointments so I wondered why they wouldn't tell me they were doing extra work and ask for my permission. I fell for it once and they charged me the $600 they had given me as a discount for some 'unavoidable' work but they were not satisfied. After every appointment they would reassure me that I have paid for everything and the follow-up appts are just routine and there is no cost associated. I had 3 follow-up appts. After every single one, they would present me with a new bill for services they were forced to do.. again, they would not inform me during the appt. that they were doing the work. They would even send bills to my house for previous workd that I had supposedly paid for. I stopped going and avoided my final appoitnment because they were asking me for $300. When I argued with them that you cannot charge me when you stated that I have already paid for everything, they said 'oh you are emotional today, and we'll give you the bill next time." I couldn't believe my ears. The office manager, Carol is rude and Dr. Cooper's die hard fan it seems. She argued with me over every bill. She was not pleasant to deal with when I had to reschedule an appt. after my car was in an accident and at the shop, she would remind me of how busy they are and rescheduling appts was an inconvenience; however, they called me to reschedule appts b/c Dr. Cooper was not available. Clearly, rescheduling my meetings and work schedule was not an inconvenience. All in all, I hope his quality of work was good. I guess I won't know until the next dentist sees my mouth. Terri the office manager is extremely rude to people on the phone. After contacting this office to try to get questions answered about a Mr. Cox whom I received a check from I was continuously spoken to rudely & hung up on. I was only trying to locate a phone number for this person so I could ask them a question about a check I received in the mail. Terri is very unprofessional and should seriously consider finding a new job. She is not pleasant on the phone and has no business dealing with customers. A simple "there is no one hear by that name" or "you have the wrong number" would have sufficed. She demanded that I provide her with my personal contact information without even listening to me. I think my first time visit was a month ago, nothing has happened but negotiating, in 2015 I got oral surgery from a mad scientist who left me without teeth and dental-phobia. It's been too long, I need teeth, and full implants done in a day has to happen. I like the front desk staff there, and Dr Cooper is kind enough, but reminds me of a car salesman, and keeps repeating the options until my first price quote: $64,000? That's over twice what my new car cost, and I left stunned. Teeth in 1 day might be possible, but he wanted full payment prior to doing any work, and I would have a full set of permanent implants in over a year? He offered free dentures to get my smile back sooner, but I've been avoiding dentures, more trouble and trauma, still I went back because I need teeth, and hours later left for home with the free dentures quoted at $2,500 for the upper and $25,000 for the lower? He told me he would start to make teeth when I have him money, and wanted me to bring $5000 to my next visit. I know implants are expensive, but time is money too, as is gas, and he's wasting both of mine. I'm going to try the dreaded Western Dental, they, unlike him, take my insurance. read more

OMG, it was years ago that I went here, but it still angers me today. I came in for a routine x-ray. Before checking my insurance card, the receptionist whisked me into the exam room. She didn't check my insurance till the 2-hour exam was done, and by that point they'd taken standard x-rays plus bite-wings (for no good reason). Immediately following the appointment I found out my insurance didn't cover Dr. Cooper at all, so I was out of pocket for both sets of x-rays. But the worst part was the "exam" itself, which was more of a hard sell sales pitch for cosmetic dental procedures and "preventative" work. For two hours I lay slightly upside down, having to repeat over and over again that I didn't want veneers, that I didn't want to spend $4000 on preventative crowns that he admitted insurance would never cover. I had filled out the cosmetic dentistry questionnaire and checked "no" for every cosmetic procedure, but as soon as he had me under the dentist's light, he went on and on about the flaws in my teeth, trying to scare and shame me. He told me I definitely needed veneers and that they could drill drown my teeth and then attach them. He wanted to drill down my teeth to slivers to put fake teeth on (which can come off, of course, leaving you with exposes witch teeth!), teeth that I repeatedly said I didn't want or need. Also, he said I had some "decay" (he didn't come out and say I had cavities, just "some decay") in four molars. He said I could get fillings, but what he would recommend is that I get "preventative crowns". These would not be covered by insurance, so I would owe $4000. So I should ruin totally good teeth and spend $4000 to prevent what? Aren't you trying to prevent dental work and spending money? A friend had referred me to this guy, and when I told him what happened, he said, "Oh, yeah, he's like that. I've got a fortune in my mouth." So this is his standard practice. I needed Dental implants since I had no back teeth they were taken out years ago. I decided to do my research and interviewed 8 other dentists in the bay area before I went to Dr. Keith Cooper. I have to say I was impressed with his overall knowledge, what labs he uses for implants, and understanding that every patient is unique in getting dental implants done. I had four done at the same time and can't believe how I didn't have much pain. He made sure that I was his only patient those few hours so there would be no interuptions. He even had a car pick me up and drive me home that day. He is the Absolutely Best at what he does!! His prices were fair. There are alot of ads out there offering dental implants at a lower price but be careful they are not Specialists and do not have the proper training. I've been a patient of Dr. Cooper for probably 15-20 years. He's done several crowns, root canals, a recent implant and many more minor procedures. His work has always been of the highest quality. I have never had to be careful with the implant or the crowns- I treat them just like natural teeth. I went back today to Dr. Cooper to have the temporary crown he'd put in last week replaced by the permanent crown. I feel so good about the whole experience. The quality of the work is A+, and I feel relieved that the subpar crown I'd had put in years ago by another dentist is finally right. Better than right. Excellent. I love that Dr. Cooper took the time to really see my mouth, not just the one tooth I was there to have fixed. At one point he said, "Your bites off a little here because of this other tooth", and he took a minute to file down the jagged edge of that tooth. I was so used to feeling the imbalance in my bite that I didn't even noticed it anymore. But, boy, do I notice the difference now. I just feel better. Dr. Cooper was recommended by a coworker who spoke highly of him. My coworker's problem teeth and her TMJ symptoms went away after seeing Dr. Cooper . Dr. Cooper is the doctor to see especially if you have extensive dental work to be done. He is worth it. He is a dental artist/skilled, caring, compassionate doctor. He has great caring staff too. I went to see Dr. Cooper after I got sick from dental procedure done by another dentist and then I saw one more dentist before my coworker told me about Dr. Cooper . The first day, Dr. Cooper did extensive mouth assessment and made adjustments on my teeth and so much of my pain/ suffering went away, I knew I was finally in the hands of the right doctor. I wish I knew Dr. Cooper before, I would have never got sick because he knows what he is doing. A caring, compassionate doctor is nice but it is very important that they are skilled at what they do, like Dr. Cooper. I had a terrible experience at this office. I scheduled an appointment for a simple procedure, which was to re-attach a veneer. Once in a while, they pop off. The entire time, I felt intense sales pressure from Dr. Cooper to essentially re-do all of my veneers with crowns instead. Some of the reasons he gave seemed possibly legitimate if incredibly expensive and not necessary, while some of them seemed far-fetched and desperate. The idea that the veneers are responsible for swollen gums (rather than just not getting a deep clean for a long time) is an opinion not shared by any other dentist I have come across. I felt a very used-car salesmen vibe throughout...it seemed to me that from the moment I walked in, the goal was upsell, upsell, upsell. He told me that my previous dentists (who happen to outclass him by miles) did not do what he would have done and, in my opinion, was far-fetched in his analysis of my bite and the "problems" it was causing. His approach seemed to be to make me feel ashamed and embarrassed to have gotten veneers, and that if I was making such a bad decision to just fix this one, rather than a major reconstruction, he would do it reluctantly and against his clearly implied recommendation. In addition, I felt extremely misled, whether intentional or not, about the billing. I was asked to sign a "sales receipt" before seeing the dentist for around $150. That happens to be the across-the-board normal amount for re-cementing a veneer from most offices, so any reasonable person would infer that's what I was paying for, although I didn't ask specifically about the line-by-line; I have never seen anyone charge you in advance and suspect they've had past issues with cost disputes. After I signed that and spoke to the salesman, I mean dentist, I was brought another "sales receipt" for around $450. It appears that the first slip was merely for an "emergency exam" and x-ray, even though the appointment was booked a week in advance and other offices have never needed to do x-rays. I felt it was misleading and a bait-and-switch tactic, and hidden costs have been alluded to in other reviews on here...just wish I had read the reviews. You have to ask yourself why you would be forced to sign cost documents while sitting on the dentist's chair, worrying about your procedure and being distracted. At that point, when I saw the absurd cost, I walked out, since I don't want to pay triple the price without certainty that insurance would cover it. By the way, I went to a dentist two days later, a very reputable one, who did a great job for $130 and were upfront about the costs. They also told me it would be ridiculous to follow his recommendations and to keep my teeth the way they are. The office manager, Terri, was incredibly rude; as I was walking out the door, I honestly forgot to pay since I was so frustrated, and she screamed at me "Okay, I'll just send this to collections!!!" which could be heard by anyone in the room. She then had the nerve to tell me later on the phone that Dr. Cooper would have done the procedure for free since he is such a wonderful guy, but she didn't offer a refund, despite that I left with my separated tooth in-hand. During the phone call, she wanted to make sure that I knew Dr. Cooper had additional degrees; I guess she thought I didn't hear her when she told me over and over again at the office; Dr. Cooper himself also had to remind me how well certified he is. Usually people at the top of their profession don't need to throw their credentials at you multiple times, but I can see why it might be necessary when your goal is to get someone to consider a major, expensive, and unnecessary re-construction of their teeth rather than relieving their anxiety of not having a front tooth in place. Just a side note: my wife's late grandfather was a famous dentist in Hollywood who created many iconic smiles; he never once had to explain to a patient that he was smarter or more qualified than their previous dentists, nor did his staff need to promote themselves in an obnoxious manner. After my wife wrote a Yelp! review, I was contacted by the office and told that their legal team was considering taking action, since the review was not to their liking, rather than just asking us to either remove it or make a factual correction about the experience. Probably would have been better to ask how they could provide a better experience next time. read more

I have never felt so insignificant as the day my son and I went to Dr. Cooper's office. We were there almost 2 hours before we ever saw him and then he only spent about 15 mins with us. I tried to ask questions but received the response I needed to focus as he (Dr.Cooper) had a doctor appt to get to. His behavior was such that it seemed like we should feel lucky he took time out to see us at all. I believe my son captured it accurately when he said "Once he found out we couldn't pay for the whole package he was selling, he was done with us." My son felt dismissed. Whether or not a patient can only pay for the minimum procedures needed or pay for the Ferrari of dental treatments, this should not determine whether a dentist has time for them or not. I believe even dentists take an oath to help not harm. Well Dr. Cooper, you didn't keep that oath with us. Hopefully my judgment is better with next dentist we choose. read more

At my first meeting with Dr. Cooper, I was impressed with his total professionalism, knowledge and ability to go outside the box, where other dental professionals wouldn't. He and his staff gave me back the confidence to smile again. Though my procedures were extensive, I felt totally comfortable with Dr. Coopers ability to correct and repair any issue that arose. I'm very glad to have been referred to Dr. Cooper. Finally, after not experiencing good dental work in the Bay Area since my own brother a dentist back in the Midwest did my assessments. Although a little pricey, but what isn't in the Bay Area, I do feel that Dr. Cooper is knowledgeable and has excellent skills in his profession. Dr. Cooper shared some x-rays taken on some previous family work done at Western Dental vs. his work and its an embarrassment what that group charges for the poor quality work performed.
