A household name in the world of dry cleaning Johnsons are surely the front runners in the game…read more The blue, red and yellow frontage and the classical Johnsons signature can mean only one thing - speedy cleaning with care. This is student town so obviously such places are in high demand. These guys are efficient professionals taking in your booze stained dancing shirt and turning it into a dried and ironed equivalent in just four hours. Not bad eh?

My flatmate went to a ball and bought the nicest dress! It was a white, strapless dress with a…read morepink, flowery pattern. It wasn't so nice when she spilt cider all over her dress and then attempted to hand-wash it clean. After the white parts of her dress were now a pale pink and the pink flowers had faded to pale pink her dress was a mess. I went with her to Direct Dry Cleaners to get it washed properly. When the staff noticed the dress was ruined, they advised her of the best way to clean it and to look after it in future. The week after, she went back and to both our surprises, the dress was sparkling white again! The pink flowers were still faded but there was a lot less evidence of colour-mixing. I like this drycleaners because the doors are constantly wide open, allowing you to feel welcome to peruse the information on the walls without being harassed and questioned.

The suitably and originally titled Laundrette at 85 Mina Rd is a standing stone of the local community in St Werburghs. Not only can one wash literally everything one owns in their vast king-size washers big enough for a small horse, but one can also dry their prized sheets in an equally bold dryer. Furthermore (and herein lies the real charm for me), every flyer and poster for every music night in Bristol is plastered across the wall in a fantastic multicoloured mural. I have never seen anyone replace or change the posters but somehow they're always current. This laundrette is thus an excellent place both to find out what's going on in your local town, as well as to get those dirty undies sorted.

The place is fairly clean although could be better and there is only two small tables to fold clothes and one is under where the soap and fabric softener are dispensed so it was coated with laundry soap powder and the other is under the pay station (so in the way and the stuff on it gives the impression it's not meant to be used). The machines were easy to use and I really appreciated the contactless credit card payment option (without an extra fee). Just across the street is a cute little parklet with benches to enjoy some fresh air while you wait. There are also plenty of coffee shops, restaurants and grocery stores within walking distance. One of the frustrating things I encountered was that there was a laundry soap dispensing machine but it only accepts coins. So if you think you're going to be able to do your laundry without cash you better have your own soap. Also, the machine does not sell dryer sheets, only laundry soap and fabric softener. When I bought the laundry soap the box got stuck in the machine and I couldn't get it free with even my small hands. It would have also been nice if there was an unscented laundry soap option. Important to note that the last wash is at 20:00 (8 pm) even though it's open until 22:00 (10 pm). The sign says that the water supply cuts off. They do have WiFi and the code is posted on the wall. However, after I logged in it didn't actually work to connect to the internet for me. So overall, the best option I could find near the city centre of Bristol.

A small wash will set you back a couple of quid and a small drying is pretty much the same. Wash a bit more - pay a bit more. You can buy washing powder and softener here in small amounts too, just don't expect any fancy non-biological brand. The second feature to this simple store is an internet cafe! Genius in my opinion. Similar to the washers and dryers these little beauties are run on a pay-per-use scheme so you can do your emails, FBook and whatever else you need to whilst your rags are a spinning. You're happy, not bored. Whoever owns this place is also happy - for he / she just sits at home watching TV then comes and collects his pound coins at the end of the day. I've said it before and I'll say it again - genius!
