First and last time here. Washers and dryers seem to work fine but DO NOT USE THE CONTACTLESS PAY. It took three attempts to make machine #6 work. So that's £12 for a £4 wash. Then £4 logged only 4 minutes on to dryer #13. It should have been 40 minutes. I'm out over €11.00 Big shout out to the Free House 2 doors down for the coins. Got exactly what I paid for in both dryers.

Okay, so I was until now a launderette virgin, and have to admit I was quite intimidated by the…read moreidea of visiting one because I didn't have a clue what to do. However, my spare sofa cover needed washing and is too big for my own washing machine... Sure enough, the whole launderette experience started off being quite traumatic, but now I've done it once it would be easier second time around! For fellow novices, here's what you need to know: 1. First, you need to have the right change. It's £3.20 for a wash in one of the smaller machines. During the day, they probably have someone there doing service washes who may be able to give you some change - but when I went in the evening I had to walk down the road to a newsagent's to ask for change. I had to leave my washing dumped there (because I couldn't carry it that far), and was just keeping my fingers crossed that no one would pinch it. Luckily for me (and I can't think why), no one took a shining to my dirty sofa covers and they were still safely waiting for me when I got back with the right change. 2. Next you need to choose a washing machine and put your washing and soap in. You can take your own soap, or buy it there (80p I believe). I took along a capsule type one and stuck it in the washing machine drum itself, but most people were using soap powder so I don't know if I was breaking any rules. Worked fine, though. Just make sure the knob on the front is set to the temperature you want (I think there's just a choice of 'cold', 'hot' and one other that I didn't understand). The doors are quite difficult to press shut - you have to push them quite hard! 3. To get the wash started, you put the money in not at your individual washing machine, but at a central paypoint within the launderette. You have to press in the washing machine's number, then insert the correct change, then press 'S' to start it. 4. You sit and wait about 25 minutes for a normal wash cycle to finish. I took a book and sat reading. Once all the lights are off, you can press a level to open the door and remove your washing. Job done! There are also dryers on the other side of the launderette, but I didn't use those because I thought my sofa covers might shrink - I just brought them home wet to dry naturally.

There's something about this launderette; it reminds me of Dot Cotton's Launderette in Eastenders…read more I'm often hit with a wave of nostalgia as I walk past it and see people chatting away, or simply reading the paper and delighting in the stress-free task of waiting for their washing to finish. Don't ask me why I feel nostalgic - just for the record, I'm not an old pensioner reminiscing about 'the good old days down the launderette'. I suppose I just enjoy the sense of community this place inspires. Furthermore, if you have laundry that requires a thorough clean, and whites that could be whiter, this is the place to go. Boasting a range of different sized washing machines and tumble driers, Staffords spoils you for choice.

With funky purple cushion seating. * Manned. No launderette mysteries. If something goes wrong the guy's right there. * Eco friendly detergents. Stuff that doesn't sweep persistent pollutants down the drain and out to sea. * Little jars: if you forget your laundry powder you can buy a little refillable jar right there. And if you like it you can buy it full size. * Radio. Classic rock of some kind. "Walk this way" now playing... * Laundry fiction. (??!) A series of books with the word 'launderette' or 'laundromat' in the title. * Cinnamon rolls. They rock. Why doesn't every coffeeshop have them? They're so 'fika'. It's right next to Cafe Lazz where I usually go for coffee but I might go here instead now, laundry or no laundry. Cool. Only downside: if you come in winter, wear your coat!

Always really helpful for people that don't have a clue (like me!) and always have time for a natter. They have internet facilities as well so you can surf the web whilst you wait for your wash for a small cost...and i have breaking news........they give you free jelly beans!! Won me over in a heartbeat. I like the play on words as well, clean bean, free jelly beans... it's always really clean there and it's just a cute, cosie more modern version of a launderette.
