We've always loved doing things that are train-related, so this was an easy decision. Riding the train? Even better, as I've always loved train travel. They have the coach, first class, and the new open-air cars. Those looked awesome, but since it was our anniversary weekend we were looking for a bit more. "A bit more" meant we got to rid in The Cab with the engineers! It was a totally awesome experience, sitting, literally, at the front of the train with the guys making the thing go. As I recall the engineers were Robert and Steve, and were really nice guys. They were funny and informative, and it was cool to see the "behind the scenes" while the train was in motion. The Cab wasn't as big as I expected it to be and the controls weren't really high-tech, then again this was a pretty vintage engine. It was fun as we heard them calling out commands and statuses to each other and with the conductor at the rear of the train. The scenery along the way is beautiful. Horse farms and rolling fields make for post-card ready photographs, and the limestone cuts along the way make you realize just how much work went into getting the track built back during the civil war. We were also told that, while the railroad ties are replaced very 25 years, the iron rails are still the original rails that were laid back then. Once we got to the end of the track we ended up at the Kentucky River, which was seriously cool. While it's no longer viable for river crossings it's still an awesome thing to see. We stopped there for about 15 minutes to take pictures and to take in the scenery. Back on board the train and now the Engine is pushing the train from the rear and the engineers and conductor continued their calls, making sure things were moving safely. Once back at the station it was time to disembark and visit the museum and gift shop, which doubles as the ticket booth. They have a nice array of souvenirs to chose from for anyone at any age. The museum is a bit on the small side compared to others we've been to, but at the same time it's perfectly sized for their operation. There is also a model train exhibit in one of the stationary rail cars, and a few other cars to check out on the grounds. We really enjoyed our visit and train ride - especially riding in The Cab - and we'll be back again. Looking at other reviews it makes absolutely no sense why someone would give this a 1-star rating because it was, in every sense, and absolutely awesome experience.

These are electric-assisted pedaled car things and it is really quite easy to do. You actually have to work the most to not go too hard or fast because there is no resistance except for the first few pedals to wake up the electric-assist. The scenery was absolutely lovely. The guides were warm and welcoming. You end up at the entrance to the railroad bridge over the river that you can see from Wild Turkey, which was a slight bummer...I would have DIED to go across the bridge, but I get it. Safety and whatever. LOL. It simply was a lovely time in gorgeous nature and I wish it was longer. Now I need to visit every Rail Explorers location and do them ALL. Hot tip: do considering bringing a towel or a booty pad to sit on. I wore black athletic pants so my sweaty butt from the hard plastic seats wasn't terribly noticeable. But you might benefit from some material between you and the seat.

For the four seaters, the back right seat controls the pedaling, the braking, the motor, and the speed. The others can pedal, but it doesn't contribute to the function of the car. The cars go 10-15 miles per hour and the ride is five miles out and five miles back in, culminating in a beautiful view of an abandoned railroad and nearby distilleries. Lasted about an hour. It's easy enough that almost anyone can do it, the electric motor does most of the work. The staff were super nice. We were running late and got there about 15 minutes after the requested time. They phoned us for a status update and were helpful in getting us set up immediately upon our arrival. They ensured we were buckled in and kept an eye out for our safety the entire ride. We noticed the umbrellas on the car for sun and rain. I agree with some of the others, I wish it had lasted longer. The only other criticism I have is that you have so many people on the rail that it's difficult to go at your own pace. On the way out, we were last, and behind a couple so slow that I couldn't pedal fast enough to keep the electric motor engaged, resulting in frustration and extra work. On the way back, they flip the cars, so we were first, and I was able to move at a brisk pace. For four people it was almost 205 dollars with tax and fees. Just under 50 bucks per person. They do require a waiver you can sign online ahead of time. Easy and expansive parking.

We also met Hall of Fame, Lava Man. Over $150 equine athletes in the facility. I will return someday soon to do the Founders Tour!! Our daughter had spent part of her growing-up years here in Frankfort, where my husband and I have lived for 50+ years. She enjoys introducing her Colorado daughter to the beautifully forested, living beauty of Kentucky's natural world. Before departing the dock, we enjoyed browsing in the gift shop, with a great assortment of caps, tee shirts, memorabilia, and some Ale8! Upon boarding the boat, the crew offered a bourbon service that would rival most any local selection. We all enjoyed lovely bourbon refreshments! Together with visitors from Tennessee and other nearby states, we learned some Kentucky River geography and history, along with equine, bourbon, and horse racing history. The captain was skillful and knowledgeable, as she cruised the riverboat on the sunny Sunday afternoon. The tour guide was a true font of history with amusing anecdotes of his personal career in the bourbon industry and his overall knowledge of the Commonwealth. Treat yourself, your family and your friends to an altogether enjoyable, educational, and Kentucky-based adventure-- spend some time on the riverboat! You'll be glad you did! He was friendly, engaging and humorous. The round trip ride lasted about 90 minutes. The boat was very nice with bench seating and the ride was smooth. We sat upstairs in the open air to enjoy to scenery. A bar tender will take drink orders and deliver beverages to your seats. Drink prices are reasonable. Drinks can also be ordered and purchased on line. (I think snacks were also available). We booked our cruise several months in advance with tour and tasting tickets at Buffalo Trace Distillery. Two members of our party backed out and we were able to cancel their reservations (thankfully) the week before and get a refund. We started with our visit to Buffalo Trace. We arrived about an hour early so we could shop at the distillery and we were glad we did because we did not have time to shop after the tasting and getting to the boat. The tight timeline between the tasting and the boat departure was the only downside to the trip. I recommend the cruise, but plan on going at least an hour early to the distillery to shop.

We visited the Toyota plant in Georgetown for a weekday tour. Our group leader for the day had…read moreplanned the outing several weeks ahead and reserved a 1:30 PM Wednesday in August 2026. The tour lasted approximately an hour. Enter via Gate 2 and personnel at the guard shack will direct where to park. We arrived to check in with reception and required to show our IDs. No photos allowed. Phones have to be placed in lockers. No purses or bags allowed. Must wear closed toe shoes. We entered a small theater room to view an introductory video and then the tour guide provided rules and instructions. We proceeded to the trams to load up and then embarked on a very informative tour. Our guide explained the manufacturing process, the company culture, and some of the facility features. I believe the guide stated there are 10,000 employees at this plant and welcomes and rewards their input and creativity to develop ongoing improvements. Several examples were cited of revolutionary processes initiated by workers. There is also a 50+ acre solar field to offset energy consumption, which is admirable. Toyota overall appears to have a company culture worthy of being emulated and to be producing an exemplary product. I left the tour very impressed and recommend checking it out as a unique day trip near Louisville (about an hour's drive).
