    Island Moving

This is my 5th time using professional movers. Not our worst experience ever (see my other reviews…read morefor a tale), but it ranks a solid 2nd-worst. I reached out to Island Movers ten days after the move, to give them a fair chance to respond before I left reviews. Four days later was told they had not spoken with their crew yet. Inquired again two weeks after the move, but they never replied, so here we go, be sure to see the attached photos. The two old chairs sitting outside? From my late grandmother's antique dining set. The other two from this set are repaired and are in use, with her table, in our dining room, just hadn't gotten around to repairing these two yet, so they were in the garage. Island Moving LEFT THEM OUTSIDE BY THE TRASH BINS! We didn't notice this until the next day, thank goodness trash pickup wasn't that morning! Utterly outrageous. Movers should NEVER unilaterally decide that anything is trash. The shadow box with the dog picture? Our memorial for a treasured pet. Placed glass-down in a box, along with a bunch of other framed photos, with no protective wrapping on any of them. The casting of her paw print made after her death was badly damaged by rough handling. Irreplaceable. The closet interior, with rolls of wrapping paper on the top shelf... I personally left these on boxes in that closet at waist level while clearing the shelves in prep for the move. Island Moving did not merely move them aside while packing, they went out of their way to place them NEARLY OUT OF SIGHT on the TOP SHELF, despite all the shelves being empty and available, I guess to avoid packing them? I almost didn't notice the next day. That top shelf is the same height as the top of the door opening. It's not like wrapping paper is high value, but hiding stuff to avoid packing it? You'll find several photos of stuff left behind. While there were some things we did not want moved, they were all clearly marked with wide blue painter's tape splayed over them like crime scene tape, marked "Do Not Move" with a Sharpie. While Island Moving did a great job of honoring those marked areas and leaving them, for reasons unknown they still left a bunch of stuff behind that was not marked. I can understand a few random things overlooked here and there, but the amount they left behind was crazy. How do you just walk past that much and think it is OK to leave it? Those free-standing shelves behind the toilets (and all the stuff left on them) are movable, like any other furniture. Don't want to pack the last of the stuff in the garage, so you just leave piles in there, in plain sight? At least they didn't take it all to the trash, right? I'm well-aware of the restrictions about taking paints and chemicals and other specific restricted items, but you can see from these photos that almost none of the items left behind fit those restrictions. Imagine if we had moved across the country and hadn't seen what got left behind or weren't able to go back to get it? And oh yes, the box of dry goods and dishes labeled simply "Kitchen" - that also had apples and onions packed in the middle - which were found rotting during unpacking a month later. Who packs perishables in a box and doesn't carefully label it accordingly? I wasn't there when they were working, which prevented a lot of these problems from being caught as they happened, but a moving crew shouldn't require that kind of micromanaging supervision to do decent work in the first place. My wife was there, was overwhelmed trying to keep track of the crew, this was her first experience with movers, she was not expecting to need to closely supervise or check their work, and had to leave the move-out location before they were done. All I can say for positives is that scheduling was easy, they arrived promptly when expected, and were done by the end of the day. Although most of the crew reportedly worked steady from what the wife observed, one guy seemed pretty whiny, repeatedly asking things like "do we have to move this, too?" Yes, you're a MOVER. Is it marked to not move? No? Move the things! Cost was fairly high compared to other services I have used in the past, it was $3,470 for five crew members to move the contents of a 3-BR townhome just two miles across town, when at least 30% of the stuff to be moved was already boxed up by us. I've paid less than that, to pack everything and move a larger household 2000+ miles, in the past. If you're not put off by the cost, and if you can closely supervise the entire time, maybe you'll be OK. If they ever get back to me, I'll update this review.

The best! Way better than A Helping Hand. Very responsive to my needs. A Helping Hand did what…read moreTHEY wanted ignoring what I needed. Island Moving was extremely courteous, polite. Owner of A Helping Hand was rude, condescending though his workers were polite and courteous. Island Moving was everything you would want in movers.
