At mile 19.6, this was a highlight of the Road to Hana. Keep in mind, there's no parking lot, no paved trails, no lifeguard, and no bathroom (technically).

It's a steep walk down which can be dangerous especially when it's wet. We were trying to find a place to park but all the closest areas had either no parking signs or cones. The closest parking area was a long walk away and at that point we weren't willing to park and walk down just to catch the waterfalls for a couple minutes. It is nice but the lack of parking makes it a hard place to stop.

After the (a bit disappointing) stop at the Twins Falls we parked here quick to enjoy the views. There are very limited parking spots available, except you're in for a walk. But that day we've been the only ones stopping there. This stop offers you amazing views of the coast and you can see the Road To Hana for miles! When you see the coastline, you really have to wonder and be amazed, how this Road has been built. It's a quick stop only, but rewards you with really great views and pictures. A must-do!

The guided tour was on point with where I was on the highway. It played melodies and instructed turns and upcoming paths. Driving this highway was pretty difficult because there were narrow turns and everything was just narrow. Any slight mishap can land you down the ocean. The breathtaking part about this highway were the trees! I love the trees so damn much that I had all windows rolling down. There were mango and eucalyptus trees everywhere. I smelled mangoes and eucalyptus the whole time. The eucalyptus trees were a good refresher and awakening call! They also purified my car and got rid of any food odors from meals I had in the car! Thankfully they acted as a perfume and air freshener! The whole car ended up smelling like eucalyptus! Luckily these eucalyptus trees were everywhere in Maui! The whole ocean was all around the highway! The ocean water skep sparkling from the sun! The highway was very flat and not much hills. There were some parts of the highway that felt like I was driving on the ocean. There were people surfing. There were some points on the highway that allow you to go into the ocean and just take a swim or dive. I did stop in the middle of the highway to snorkel. There were so many colorful fish as you go down and deeper into the ocean. Very beautiful fish. The beach was also save because I left my belongings on the branches of a nearby tree and nobody stole it even though there were people chilling on the beach.

This set the tone for the Hawaiian Kingdom that rolled over the islands until 1893's annexation. I was fortunate to visit here on a recent trip to the Big Island. It was here in Kohala, that was the birthplace of the great Hawaiian king. As such, a state of King Kamehameha was erected here. It's said that this one here in Kohala is one of the original statues in all of Hawaii. With that said, I arrived here at my request, as it was my birthday day on of arrival. I got to see the king and had lunch literally across the street at the King's View Cafe. I spent about a good 15 minutes here while my friends started to head into the Cafe and order their food. There was a few people / tourists who was also doing the same thing I was doing, so I just stood there admiring it and thought to myself "lucky to be living Hawaii". It was those things where it was a cool thing to be a Hawaii resident and to be able to say proudly that "I'm from Hawaii". With that said, I did that admiration thing for a while and then took some selfies with the King before heading back across the street. It's one of Hawaii's most famous statue, since I've read that this one in Kapaau is the original one and the statue on Oahu is the replacement. It was an interesting story to say. Today, the King Kamehameha statue is displayed in 3 places: here in Kapaau, one in Honolulu across Iolani Palace, and one in Hilo, also on the big island. The overall experience here at the King Kamehameha statue here in Kapaau, HI was as awesome as it was spiritual. It was empowering to be in the area where the King was born in the Kohala district of the Big Island. It was a good thing really to see the statue and be reminded that you are in the comforts of greatness. To be able to do what he did to unite the islands into one sovereign entity was pretty remarkable from warring islands in the early 19th century. We hear about legendary battles and King Kamehameha I did a lot during his tenure as the first king of Hawaii and left a royal legacy until 1893. The statue itself is way larger than you think. You can really literally walk up to it and smile. It's a bronze statue that really is beyond measure. The craftsmanship to make one of these must be dedicated and determined as well as detailed. The statue of the king provides us a glimpse of the past, offering heroism, Hawaiian nationalism to some extent, and just a general source of pride. What the King did to unite these islands helped us today. In the grand scheme of things, King Kamehameha I is a man to be admired for sure. If you are in the area and want to see the original statue, come on by. Only thing is that it's quite a drive from Kailua-Kona and Hilo. Best thing would be a rental car to get in and out of the area. The original King Kamehameha I statue is located across the street from the King's View Cafe. Its address is 54-3897 Akoni Pule Highway, the address of the Cafe, but the statue itself is basically across the street, as mentioned previously. As far as parking goes, your best bet would be to find parking at the statue itself versus finding parking elsewhere on residential streets nearby and walk it in. There is no admission fee, which is awesome! The statue stands here as a monument and a reminder of the great King who United Hawaii from the warring island factions pre 1810. For me though, it was a place to explore and find some form of peace and purpose when life turns and twists into some crazy representation of ugly and you just need to get away from it all. The statue here in Kapaau is a representation of history and reminds us of our historical tribulations of how we got here as a people and how time resulted in a man's dream to be king and to unite the islands into one sovereign entity. To be honest though, this experience gave me chills and reminded myself that dreams can come true. Believe it and you can achieve anything you set your mind to it. That was the takeaway from my experience here. Hope there's a similar message for you. 5.0 stars for the overall experience. Support local! A+

It was a proud moment, knowing that my father's family were born and raised in Puukolii, Lahaina. As a youngster, I heard stories from my dad, uncles and auntie about life in Puukolii and growing-up in Lahaina. Being able to visit and see the landmarks was quite a sight.

The gargantuan steel structure and smoky/sweet smell greeted you as you drove up Lahainaluna Road which was covered in dust, caked-on red dirt, and cane stalk remnants. The mill stood on both sides of the road with a bridge-like connector in the middle. Come present day, the only surviving artifact is a majestic 225 foot high smokestack that has been beautifully restored into a free visitable monument, complete with restored locomotives. For the past six years (since 2009) they held an event known as the Lahaina Plantation Days that showcased plantation history, exhibits, arts, crafts, entertainment, and food booths, which benefitted the Lahaina Restoration Foundation. Sadly the event's finale was this year, 2015.
