The first mill on this site was built in the 1870s and has been left partially dismantled since 1933 when most of it was moved to the Philippines, what's left looks like old foundations and walls. The ruins nowadays are home to wild chickens and there are interesting concrete elevations you can jump around on and explore. The backdrop from every angle is amazing, you can see misty mountains, palm trees, ocean, and jungle from every angle. There are also some more old buildings and equipment in the forest opposite of the main ruins. If you like this sort of thing it's good for a nice 30-60 minute stop. Behind the ruins is a nice small beach, toward the left going near the plantation house there is a very beautiful piece of giant driftwood that is next to ground strewn with white coral polished by the ocean. If you come at the right time of day these are easily the most accessible tidepools that aren't marked on maps as "tidepool". It's located on google maps as "Olowalu Landings" and you make a left before the private gated neighborhood toward the signs that say "Olowalu Camps".

You can find the Old Fort in Historic Lahaina, Maui on the corner across from the Lahaina…read moreCourthouse. It's an interesting recreation of one corner of the old fort that once stood on the property and a good example of cut coral building construction - something you see from the early days of Hawaii's settlement from the west. Divers would go out into the reefs and chisel out huge blocks that would be shaped into the building blocks - several historic buildings on Maui and Oahu use similar materials, like colonial churches. I'd say overall this location is of only modest interest, there isn't much innovation to be seen through the example. It is on a beautiful stretch of property however and perfect for a photo op. Plenty of free street parking nearby but really, just stay in Lahaina and walk to it - it's on the Historic Lahaina walking tour, which I also recommend.

I guess they couldn't leave more of it because of the danger of the rocks falling, but it's something to see. I guess this was a fort used to defend the island. At some point I took a snapshot of what it was saying and the history. Nice to take some selfies by the fort.9

Light Vision Calling…read morethis place a "lighthouse" is kind of a stretch, as the structure is more of a light beacon or pole, but that's a minor quibble for such a gorgeous location. The lighthouse access is maybe about one-mile west of the more popular Nakalele Blowhole and is located along mile marker 38 of the Kahekili Hwy. If you type in "Acid Warzone Trail" into your navigation, it should get you close. Just look for the friendly guy selling goodies from Julia's Best Banana Bread. The Good: *Free *Bring cash to buy some stuff from the aforementioned booth. Their Banana Bread was pretty good, but they're Liliko'i Butter was out-fucking-standing. Also, ask him to show you his "pet" mongooses! *A short walk from the parking lot gets you spectacular views of some amazing Hawaiian coastline. The Meh: *The eponymous "lighthouse" is very unimpressive, but just remember, the journey is the destination in this case. (: *No access to the Blowhole from here, but it's still worth a stop. *Trails are a little worse for wear *Limited cell phone reception, but surprisingly, there was some (Xfinity Mobile [aka Verizon]). The Ugly: *No shade in the parking lot and space is limited TLDR: Great place to stop for amazing views and some tasty eats. Just remember to bring cash!
