On 4 June, the transfer of my retirement assets went wrong. My Roth IRA and rollover IRA were transferred into a taxable margin account. Because of the nature of the transfer, I understood that I had a limited period in which to correct the error before potentially severe tax consequences could arise. In order to initiate the recall process, I first had to verify my identity. The only method available to me was a call to a toll-free number. I was in the United Kingdom, where I normally reside, and was unable to use the firm's suggested workaround because it would not connect to toll-free numbers from that jurisdiction. Altruist suggested that my former adviser, Josh St. Laurent, arrange a brief three-way call so that the recall process could begin. He declined to do so. Instead, time was spent seeking alternative guidance that ultimately depended upon the same identity-verification procedure that I could not access. Twenty days of a sixty-day correction period elapsed before I was able to verify my identity myself. Ironically, I was able to do so only because I found an old international calling card in a handbag that I had brought with me from the United States years earlier. The assets were ultimately mostly restored. My concern is therefore not the existence of an error but the response to it. Prospective clients should satisfy themselves not only that their adviser has a sound investment philosophy, but also that they understand how that adviser responds when something goes wrong, how he interprets his obligations during a transition, and whether he is willing to exercise flexibility and judgement when a client's financial security depends upon it.

I had recently listened to a Chris Abts' broadcast on TV about reducing taxes during retirement…read more(both my wife & myself have been retired for years) so I called Cornerstone to see if I could learn more. I told them I wasn't a client but asked if I could get more information as I had missed part of the braodcast. Their Marketing Director Nikki White invited me to come up and talk to Jeff Martin , one of their Financial Advisers, to analyze our situation during a free "Discovery" Session. I was instructed to complete a form that would give Jeff our financial picture and also to bring along our last 3 years of tax returns so he could best advise me. I double-checked again to make sure this was free and I was assured it was. When I arrived at their office I was greeted enthusiastically by their staff and then Jeff came out to meet me. Jeff spent over an hour going over our financials and tax returns and gave (again "gave" is the operant word since this was free) me great advice about upcoming tax law changes. Jeff is very knowledgable, professional, friendly, and pleasant. He listened patiently while I laid out our finances and only spoke for clarification. He then analyzed our situation and made some great suggestions. At then end of our time, I thanked him profusely and he assured me he was in this business to help people make good financial decisions and his reward was my thanks. Clearly Chris' management style & philosophy is evident all through the organization. What a wonderful & pleasant experience this was. If I was anywhere else in the stages of investing or planning for retirement, I would have signed up with this company. I highly recommend this firm.
