Located in a rather dingy convenience store, Kay's Kitchen sure doesn't look like much. This was our first stop in Hawaii and we weren't quite sure about it judging by appearance, but we were there and we were hungry. My sister and her husband each got a plate, one with fried chicken and one with kalbi, while I ordered a container of kalua pork and cabbage. Mine was dished up immediately, while theirs took about 15 minutes to prepare. Prices were pretty decent, especially for Hawaii (and most especially compared to the other items available in the store like ice cream for $18.99, whew!). We drove to the beach and enjoyed an impromptu picnic and overall everyone was pleased. I do wish they had labels on the hot food behind glass. My sister thought she ordered the braised chicken thighs, so was surprised when her dish had fried and breaded chicken. She could have asked for clarification, so I'm not blaming Kay's entirely, but it was a little confusing. The fellow at check out was very friendly and made sure we had the utensils and napkins we needed. The menu is quite diverse, so I'm sure most anyone could find something to their liking. read more

Okay. I was skeptical as I read "gas station" food in other reviews but decided to give this place a try. I am so glad I did. You have the option of ordering a to go plate or pick up smaller portions from their heated read to go cart. I opted for the ready to go container of white rice, scrambled egg, slice of Spam and one sausage link. My wife had the fried rice, Portuguese sausage and over easy eggs. We loved it. After the mapping program misdirected us to a home, I decided to call the "restaurant".....not a restaurant but a takeout kitchen in Matsuyama's grocery store across the street from where the mapping tried to take us. On a recent trip this week, thanks to Yelp, I found Kay's Kitchen! Located in the Matsuyama Food Mart, Kay's serves delicious food. Breakfast, Plate Lunches, Daily Specials, sandwiches, burgers and pizza (all made to order. My partner had a Burger, which he said was the best he has had in quite awhile. Their daily special that day was Pastele Stew. This was also just about the best I have had. Prices are good, servings are huge and service is friendly. Great little market to pick up some fresh food. The people working there are genuinely friendly and give off the island vibe. We picked up some breakfast items and they were all tasty. Don't get confused; Kay's Kitchen is located inside the back of Matsuyama Food Mart. This is the first place we stopped at after we landed in Kona. We wanted something fast to eat since we had to drive all the way to Hilo. I am addicted to loco moco and that's what I was gonna get. First impression wasn't so great; they literally took out frozen patties from a plastic bag to grill. While the overall meal was huge, I was not pleased. The gravy was fine, but the meat patty lacked any type of flavor (not surprising since it was frozen). My husband on the other hand, had a really good entree - he got the special, "Josh's Pork & Peas". Reminded me of home! I guess your experience can go either way but I think the food behind the glass is probably more fresh than anything else. No seating so take the food to a nice beach and enjoy! read more

Unassuming and tucked into the back of a small convenience store, Kay's Kitchen has tasty Hawaiian grindz, burgers, sandwiches and freshly baked pizzas. We were hungry and passing through when we found Kay's on Yelp and decided to give it a go. There were a lot of tasty sounding options on the menu board, but we went with a large loco moco and were not disappointed! They grilled two huge hamburger patties up fresh when we ordered, along with our eggs. It came with two huge scoops of rice and all the delicious brown gravy we could have hoped for. Broke da mouth! We watched them hand stretching the pizza dough and saw some being picked up while we were there and made a mental note for future reference. I'll try the kalua pork at some point as well. The market has tons of groceries and other amenities to peruse while your food is prepared, including Hawaiian candies and snacks, treats from local bakeries, camping food, beer, fresh produce, "mainland" eggs, health foods, souvenirs and more. Lots of people were stopping by after work and after their beach trips to pick up late lunches and early dinners, as well as grab snacks for the commute home. This place was delicious, we kind of happened upon it by chance, and all of us were so thankful that we did, it was by far the best teriyaki chicken I had in forever, and the quality of the chicken was AMAZING! it did take a little while to get all of our food (we were a group of 8) but it was well worth the wait. I would say the only downside is there really is no seating anywhere so you need to have a place to go to eat it, or be okay with eating it in the car. We ate it in the car and it was totally fine. On the plus side, since we stumbled upon this place on our way in from the airport, we were also able to grab some grocery items while we were there too. I would definitely not patronize Kay's again. This place is inside a small local market. There are no seats. Everything is to-go. I placed an order for the Mahi Mahi plate, Korean chicken, Teri beef burger, Teri chicken burger, and a Kalbi plate. When I placed the order for the Mahi Mahi plate, the order taker told me that it's going to be $15. The menu clearly states $13.50, but she insisted that I shall pay the extra $15 if I wanted Mahi Mahi today. Whatever...I don't get confrontational over $1.50. Instead of the Kalbi plate I got a plate that had Mahi Mahi and some fried Calamari...wtf, man! I pointed out that they made a mistake on the order, and I was told that they ran out of Kalbi beef and shrimp. The Korean chicken had no sauce! So I was wondering what made this Korean. Maybe the sesame they sprinkled on top??? Look at the pics I uploaded. Notice the lemon wedge with the sticker still affixed on it. The Teri beef burger and the Teri Chicken burger was not better than anything on a McDonald's menu. The meats on these two items were tough and flavorless. read more

The Korean Chicken is delicious. I highly recommend that as a lunch or dinner choice. For breakfast my favorite is an egg over easy with the homemade Corned Beef Hash. Both are really good. Sadly I can't say that about the pizza I highly recommend that you not buy this it's possibly a 1 star somewhere but I can't even give it one. read more
