Before discovering this little place hidden away in Brisbane's North side, I was sure I would never find a true, traditional Margherita. Ever. Whichever café or restaurant I dined in, I was always presented with a cheesy, greasy looking pizza, which I simply could not finish. I was at my wit's end, trying to find the perfect pizza, and I thought I never would. Well, I was wrong.
La Zucca is a small café/restaurant which specialises in wood fired pizzas. And let me tell you - they are amazing! The very first time I came here, I expected to be served the same as usual - a pizza base smothered in tomato sauce, cherry tomatoes, and lots and LOTS of cheese. To my surprise, I discovered the opposite. A slice (or 6) of heaven.
Okay, so let's start from the bottom. The pizza base - a light, crunchy, thin, delicious base which you can eat and eat, topped with a homemade tomato-based sauce. Little balls of bocconcini spread over the base, melted down to delicious, creamy circles of deliciousness. And to finish it off, topped with fresh basil leaves. That's it. I know it sounds simple, but that's all a Margherita pizza is, and should be. But the flavours are far from it. The mix of the tomato base, with the slight sweetness and creaminess of the bocconcini, topped with the aroma of the basil...it's simply to die for.
I could eat this pizza forever. I order it every single time and even before it arrives at the table, my taste buds are tingling with anticipation and my mouth watering. I have found my happy place.
