The charm of Morrissey's is related to it's age. The nicknacks, jars, advertisements and other wall and shelf ornaments are exactly in place as they were 100 years ago. Nay, 200. Walking into Morrissey's is like taking a trip back in time to a simpler place where simpler ways governed the way we lived and people were generally shorter and smaller, as evidenced by the tiny pub stools and tables. One of the coolest things here is the visitor register, which is several volumes thick since it dates back to the pub's founding, and is still daily updated by those wanting to ink their names into a bit of Irish history. Book of Kells my ass. You can't write you name in that one, can you? No, you can't. "They" say a pub closes each day in modern Ireland. Let's hope Morrissey's stands the test of time. A pint of Guinness is most reasonable. The bartender was surprised when I "bused" our glasses to the bar. I told him I was a bar owner for ten years and knew how hard it was for a lone bartender to cover both the bar and the tables. We went to Birr to see if we could possibly track them down. The first place we stopped at was Kelly's pub. We had the best service and ate the best food. The soup was served with fresh homemade brown bread & Irish butter and the cottage pie was served piping hot with a rich flavour that felt not only delicious but nutritious too, The vegetables we were served tasted like they had just been picked. We asked the waitress if she could direct my American friend regarding sources of possible information on her long lost Irish relatives. Before I knew what was happening the owner John drove us to meet her family. He made phone calls, got their address and brought us there himself. I was so proud that my friend got to see the magic of Irish hospitality and selfless acts of kindness towards a stranger. The atmosphere was perfect! It was early Sunday morning, and there were already a few locals inside having their morning beer and reading the newspaper. I did some exploring because it looks so small on the outside, but you get in, and it just keeps going and going. So essentially I know my stuff, and this place is HA-mazing (and the jokes are far better than my puns) Honestly, you probably wont get better value anywhere else in Dublin to see a range of such good live comedians. It takes place every Sunday and Monday night, entry is free and they also randomly go to the effort of handing out free ice-cream during the half time break! I've been twice now, and both times I was really quite amazed by the consistent quality of good comedians for such a low-budget, low-hype show. Usually at these comedy nights where you get several people performing, there'll always be some hurrendously awkward and cringey comedians who just crash and burn joke after joke. In these situations you're left biting your fist and wincing your eyes, telepathically shouting at them to get off the stage... Honestly though, the both times I went to The Comedy Crunch my fist stayed firmly out of my mouth and my eyes were not sore from any cringe-wincing! Instead it was my leg that was sore from all the thigh slaps I was lashing out with each hilarious joke that was thrown at the crowd, and then my eyes were only red because I was laughing so hard that I was brought to tears! With acts like Aidan Bishop, Fred Cooke and Damo Clarke making appearances, not to mention loads of other Irish and International acts, I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good old laugh-and-a-half.
