We went to Birr to see if we could possibly track them down. The first place we stopped at was Kelly's pub. We had the best service and ate the best food. The soup was served with fresh homemade brown bread & Irish butter and the cottage pie was served piping hot with a rich flavour that felt not only delicious but nutritious too, The vegetables we were served tasted like they had just been picked. We asked the waitress if she could direct my American friend regarding sources of possible information on her long lost Irish relatives. Before I knew what was happening the owner John drove us to meet her family. He made phone calls, got their address and brought us there himself. I was so proud that my friend got to see the magic of Irish hospitality and selfless acts of kindness towards a stranger. The atmosphere was perfect! It was early Sunday morning, and there were already a few locals inside having their morning beer and reading the newspaper. I did some exploring because it looks so small on the outside, but you get in, and it just keeps going and going. The atmosphere is cozy and the waiters are all pretty fun with the typical Irish sarcasm we have learned to smile at and join in with. The food was just okay. We had the burger and the lasagne. It was nothing epic, was edible, but nothing wowed us. I would have loved to try the Kytler's whisky and beers, but they were interestingly not offered so we stuck with the Guiness.
