K'u'uk is a fascinating restaurant and probably the most foodie experience you can have in Merida…read more They are committed to preserving Yucatecan cuisine and Mayan traditions, but the food itself is also incredibly modern and makes use of many molecular gastronomy techniques. And to top it off, it's located inside a gorgeous colonial-style house at the end of Paseo de Montejo (by the monument). All of this adds up to a pretty spectacular meal. At a place like K'u'uk, I have a hard time resisting the tasting menu, so we did that! They also offer an a la carte menu if tasting menus aren't your thing. The tasting menu provides a name for each of the 12 courses, but they explain the course in detail when they serve it. Of our courses, I most enjoyed the coconut, shrimp, sea tostada, Mayan octopus, tamale, and meringue courses. There was one I really didn't enjoy - the venison in pipian - which I found texturally quite difficult to enjoy, but the rest I liked or loved (the tamale was my favorite in flavor, but the Mayan octopus and shrimp courses were the most "what am I eating?!"). They also offer a great beverage program, which includes anything and everything. I started with a glass of wine - a Gewurtztraminer from San Luis Potosi, which I really enjoyed. Then I moved onto a cocktail (my husband had selected a great one, so I copied him), which I loved as well. The service was great throughout, but they did something at the end of the meal which was totally different and wonderful: they offered us a quick tour of the house and the test kitchen. The test kitchen in particular was amazing to see. We saw equipment they use, idea boards for inspiration, former projects, and more. This was a really special addition to the evening. Overall, the meal was very good (other than the one dish I did not enjoy, my only complaint is that 12 courses is quite a lot, and I ate more than I would have preferred to), but the experience is one I will remember. Every moment of our dinner was evidence of how much the restaurant and every member of its staff cares about its mission to share and preserve Mayan and Yucatecan cuisine and food culture. A special meal and place in Merida.

And I'm glad that we stepped in. We had an amazing dinner. I ordered enchiladas and I forget what my husband had. But I liked them because they tasted like the Mexican enchiladas that I'm used to. I got them with a red salsa, that wasn't too spicy, but it was good. The food in Merida is very different and it was nice to get back to some familiar flavors. We liked this place so much that we came back for breakfast the next day. Again, the meal was quite good and filling and had we come earlier in the week, we would have returned, however, there were other corners and interesting places to checkout. While there the service was very good. They weren't full. They had a cute little stand onto which I could put my purse. They also had an interesting looking bar. We did have some chips with three different salsas. Each was interesting. I also believe that we had the guacamole which was quite good and tomato-less. I would recommend this place for a good meal for breakfast or dinner.

TLDR: Overpriced AND they pressure you to tip - worst experience in Merida so far…read more I never write reviews, but our experience here was so poor that it warrants me warning others. Overall the food was decent, but drastically overpriced compared to the numerous other options in Merida. But the worst thing about Piñuela is the service. Our waiter was never to be found, and took forever to get us basic things like water and napkins.  In fact, our dishes were sitting on the pass for so long that another waiter ended up bringing us our food. All 5 dishes all at once of course. Finally, as other reviews have mentioned they tried to sneak in a 15% tip to the bill total. I asked about it and the waiter suggested it was "optional". He then waited at our table until I paid, which was tremendously awkward. It's obvious he was trying to pressure/guilt us into paying the full tip. The management at the restaurant clearly cares nothing about the experience of its customers. Please from my mistake and don't bother with Piñuela.

The entry area is very unassuming and looks like it is labeled as "La Gala", but I assure you, a pleasant breakfast/brunch/lunch place awaits. Located in an almost hidden place off of the main 47 avenue, Te Estraño, Estraño is a gift of a place for those seeking a nice brunch spot. We were seated in a nice gardeny courtyard area that felt relaxing and cool, and were promptly attended by service. The various entrees have some unique and clever names, perhaps inspired by poetry and literature. I was sad that they did not have one of their entrees (a pork belly sandwich), but the waiter recommended an alternative that worked for me. My wife ordered their version of a Huevos Motuleños that was a great rendition paired with Longaniza de Valladolid (and plantains). Our friendly waiter didn't seem very versed in English, but my 1st grade-level Spanish powered through successfully to order both drinks and entrees without a hitch. We loved the presentation of the food (as artfully presented as their entree names), and the overall vibe of the place. Oh, a travel hint to those English speakers. If you go to a bathroom with the letter "M" thinking "Men's", just remember that in Spanish "M" means "Mujeres", which is for Women. Not that I made that mistake personally, mind you... I stayed at the Holiday Inn that was a 4 minute walk from this establishment. theres an Oxxo along the way, so it was a great destination for dinner and grabbing essentials. Go for an outdoor table. The inside rooms look depressing like a yellow prison at night time. We were there during happy hour, so we got two margaritas even though we ordered one. As simple as it was, it really hit the spot! Bright, fresh, and the right amount of salt. The Ribeye Chicharron was pretty good, although it could have been more tender. Its not chewy by any means, but its also not as soft as it could have been. Feels like they repurpose their ribeye scraps for this dish. Also no need to order guacamole, as they give you a mountain of avocado in this dish. The Octopus tostada was pretty good. They cooked the pulpo just right. They add tons of veggies on top so theres a lot of different flavors and textures in this one. The tostada itself holds up pretty well in its crunchiness. Cochinta pibil tacos were good, but Ive had better cochinta throughout my trip. The seasoning and flavor wasnt as bold as other places have served it. The sour pork was OK, but I couldnt help feeling it could have had more flavor. This was more like a orange glazed salad, with pork thrown in the mix. Its not bad, but it wasnt what I was expecting. That watery horchata was the worst horchata I had the entire trip. It barely had any rice or cinnamon flavor after two sips. Completely skip this.
