Then comes the "rolling" downhill to more parking, shade tree picnic area, nice pond surrounded by handicapped accessible pavilion and decks. The paved trail leads further back through the narrow band of woos between subdivisions till pavement ends. Then stay to the right and a nice flat trail starts for a little distance. Then "Grand Canyon" splits off to a rocky then muddy trail. Go the other direction and weeds end up taking over the trail. Back a paved trail- try the trail to the left- it goes downhill, but not nearly as step as "Grand Canyon" trail. But the trail becomes weedy after awhile.

By the time you wind your way down to the fishing lake in the back you might feel like you're a member of a private camp. On the way to the lake you'll pass a satisfactory but not large playground, picnic pavilion, restrooms, horseshoe pits, and rolling green space. There's also a paved walking track. The city's website lists volleyball amenities but I didn't see them. The fishing lake has a dock for disabled fishers. Missouri conservation department rules apply.

There is a steep set of stairs on one side or gradual slope to walk up on the other (also making it more accessible for wheelchairs, strollers, etc). There is a nice Gazebo with benches for weddings and events. My friend advised that the Alton Orchestra plays at the gazebo in the summertime. There was also a walking trail and nice views on the lower side of the park. I give it a 4/5 as there is no equipment or play area for the youngsters. Also there was a large construction area where it appears there was a landslide type situation. The city is addressing it and has the whole area sectioned off for the protection of guests. Overall I would recommend this area for a stroll, a view and maybe a picnic. Would also be a great wedding/event spot with the gazebo.

The main park contains ball fields, an aquatics complex, football field, inline hockey rink, concessions stand, basketball court, and open areas. It also includes a Braille trail for sight impaired visitors. The Day Camp is separate from the main park and about a 1/2-mile northwest of the main entrance along Droste Road. It includes tennis courts, ball fields, sand volleyball court, and soccer field. Both areas have reservable picnic shelters, convenient restrooms, and playgrounds. A paved trail connects the two sections to adjoining neighborhoods. It's a popular spot all year round, but especially in summer. Picnic shelter reservations fill early in the year for holidays.
