Kathmandu at Fortitude Valley is the one store many people walk past but never go inside. This is partly because it's sandwiched between popular night clubs and thousands of people walk past it on Friday and Saturday nights, when it's closed.
The location is a bit strange - all these clubs, some boutique-y shops, then this bright brand-name store largely occupying an entire block in the heart of the Valley. It clashes with what remnants remain of the Valley's hippy anti-establishment vibe. When the store was first set up - between the bar GPO and the Valley Mall - walking past it at night, someone will inevitably say, "a Kathmandu - here?" and you never quite get over this feeling.
For a Kathmandu of this size to survive and flourish, you'd expect it to have its own car park. The Valley location doesn't allow for this, though. There's a large, tiered public car park on top of Kathmandu, involving exorbitant fees and all that driving until you find a spot. The fees probably shouldn't be a problem if you're shopping at Kathmandu however because you probably already have a nice wallet filled with money.
If not, you should probably walk towards Wickham Street, where there is four or five similar stores in the one area at about half the price ("The Backpack District"). Mountain Designs is one good example. The staff, like at Kathmandu, seem to know their stuff but you're not paying the excessive prices common to Kathmandu.
Even during the day when I've walked past Kathmandu, I haven't seen people walking around inside. When I visited with my brother, it was empty. Yet it remains afloat. read more
