At one time back in the 1990s, Centro Toombul was one of the biggest and busiest shopping centres…read moreon the north side, until Westfield Chermside came along. Centro Toombul, which once had a big cinema, is now a shell of its former self - the cinema closed down years ago and David Jones finally shut its doors last year. However, like a Phoenix rises from the ashes, Target has now opened its doors in the old DJ's location, bigger, better and brighter than before. That David Jones was so sad and old and depressing, but the Target is huge! It has really rejuvenated the shopping centre, and I believe there is talk of a new cinema opening up in late 2012. Toombul is a great shopping centre when you don't want to battle the crowds of Chermside, as it has all the essential shops - supermarket, discount bargain shops, fashion stores, food courts, deli, bottle-shop, fruit and vege shop and more. It also has an Aldi, which Chermside doesn't have. There are a number of good eateries both in the food courts and outside the centre, including Sushi Train, Zarraffa's Coffee, Billy Baxters and Mehfil Indian. There is also a 24 hour McDonald's on top of the Toombul shopping centre.

Centro Toombul is the oft forgotten middle-aged cousin of Westfield Chermside…read more While it doesn't have it's big carpark and epic maze of shops, Toombul Shopping Centre has everything that you need in a suburban shopping centre. There's a Target and a KMart for all your basic department store needs, several cafe's and eateries, a Coles and Aldi for groceries, and a whole bunch of other random stores and things to do. The cinema's recently reopened up here, too. Definitely going to check those out soon!

I don't know which braniac came up with this (I'm sure there's a history to it), but there are actually TWO "plazas" on the corner here. Maybe even three. Things are very awkward in Cannon Hill. What I do feel I really need to tell you is that the one plaza closest to Creek Rd is officially "Cannon Hill Kmart Plaza" and it is the best of the three. It's well-lit, clean and cheerful, and as it's the closest set of shops near my current workplace, I've been frequenting it for more than five years now for necessity's sake (Australia Post for bills & postage, Mister Minit for keys & watch batteries, etc). While it's still very suburban plaza chic (compared to the monstrosity that is Westfield Carindale a mere suburb down the road), it's FINE. You know? It'll do. It's got a few chain stores that Carindale doesn't (e.g. Kmart, Loot, Autograph), a few Carindale DOES (Coles, Liquorland, EB Games, Payless Shoes, Gloria Jeans, Coffee Club, etc omg okay so there are a lot of double-ups, not my problem), and Deli Talk, but you can read more about Deli Talk on their own Yelp page (as well as some of the other shops in the Plaza). If I gave CHKP any more than three stars, they'd just be for my personal memories that are associated with it (like getting my passport), but if I strip them out, it's still absolutely A-OK here.

So this is the best Kmart I have ever been to. Ever. This. Is. Not. A. Drill. People…read more I headed there on my first solo driving trip in QLD in a car I've never driven before and was happy to make it there without getting lost or breaking the car. Win. First off. Probably the biggest Kmart I've ever been to. Homewares everywhere. I was in cheapo decorating heaven. But I was not to be distracted. I was there for certain things and that was all I was getting. Wait do I need four empty terrariums? Alice. No. Control yourself. I found everything I needed pretty quickly and they - shock horror - had everything I wanted (and so, so much more) I filled my trolley nicely (quilt, laundry stuff, bathroom bits, hangers, desk) and headed to pay WITHOUT buying any candles, paintings, extra bedding or hanging things at this stage - you cannot believe how freaking proud of myself I am. The check out kid was so cute. I got all flustered at the check out trying to get everything out of my trolley without decapitating someone with my desk and he was so patient. I am super excited to return and fully unleash myself on the joy that is Kmart. Bring it on.

This is a good example of an establishment that doesn't care for the customers, and profits only from there being no competition. Gasworks is surface level "luxury" only. The centre management has been informed at least five times. They were also advised there would be reviews going up about this. They have been given multiple methods to unblock in case it is beyond their expertise.... I don't frequent the place because of this. If I owned any of the "luxury businesses" I'd be asking for it to be fixed immediately. The bathrooms have gross chemicals sprayed into the air but inadequate air venting making them really disgusting - like a chemical or poop sauna. The only good thing about the place is who you might meet in dog parking.

I've been to Max Brenner, Yoflo Yoghurt + Fruit Bar, The Standard Market Company, Terry White, Optus and Woolworths. I've been to Gasworks a couple of times and have enjoyed it. I like the variety of shops and convenience of it being near-by. I would like to try the other restaurants and shops. They have a new restaurant there I think. The Defiant Duck. I enjoy the modern look of gasworks and it's green field. You can see children playing and you can relax on grass and eat yoghurt. I especially like lying down on the grass in the late evening with friends, family and/or significant other and staring up at the sky, while the rings of light on the old gas frame change colours. It really is magical! For a great variety of shops and restaurants and to check out the nighttime display you can't go wrong at Gasworks.

This beautiful leafy precinct is home to countless boutiques, salons, galleries, interior design studios, cafes and restaurants. Despite being known as a more ritzy and expensive area, there are plenty of things to do on James Street on a budget such as getting a fantastic cup of coffee from Merlo, seeing an art-house film at Palace Centro cinema, or even just browsing the one off shops in the area. Even as a person who lives close by, I'm never bored on James Street. There are constantly new businesses opening in and around the precinct making it a fantastic place to meet friends or spend your day off. In the middle of 2011, James Street launched Thursday night Up Late, allowing for longer trading hours and a night time option for patrons. James Street is the perfect place to waste a beautiful, sunny Brisbane day. And if you have an interstate or international friend to impress with food, wine, shopping or culture, James Street should be a priority on the itinerary.
