So, skin cancer runs in my family. I had a spot on my ankle. My mom made me PROMISE to go to a dermatologist to get it checked out. When I make promises to my momma, gotta keep 'em, even if it means going to the dermatologist which tends to be a scary prospect for me. Dr. Wier was (a) covered by my insurance and (b) semi-close to my office. Oh yeah, and I was able to get an appointment within a week. Nice. Appointment-time comes, and I walk over for my afternoon appointment. I filled out the new-patient paperwork and proceeded to wait. And wait. And wait. In the meanwhile, the receptionist yells at me because my employer had inverted my date of birth and advised me that she had to do extra work and make extra phone calls to make my insurance go through. Thank you, lady. I appreciate you doing your job. No less than an hour and a half later, I get called back into the examining room. Dr. Wier was very matter-of-fact, and definitely spent a good deal of time talking to me about skin issues. She did a thorough check over my skin for an pre-cancerous cells and gave me pamphlets on the warning signs. And the spot on my ankle? Nothing to fret. So, yeah, the wait was atrocious, but I imagine that is due to her being very thorough with each patient. A necessary evil I suppose. In the future, I'd try to get an early morning appointment before she gets off-schedule. I appreciated her listening to my issues, recommendations for how to take better care of my skin, and her careful explanations. And in addition to learning the ABCs of melanoma, I also learned another valuable lesson: Do NOT wear a thong on a day you are going to get a full-body exam for melanoma. It's awkward. read more

Had my first visit with Dr. Wier, and felt the need to review. After having a spot on my face I wanted to have checked out by a dermatologist, Dr. Wier ended up being one of the few on my PPO plan that seemed to have great reviews. Overall, I'm glad I found her, and will stay a regular patient. First off, the two receptionists I have met at her office were nothing but friendly. Super nice on the telephone, which is VERY rare. In fact, it was SUPER EASY to make an appointment, and I didn't have to wait for weeks and weeks. When I came in for my visit, they engaged me in conversation, and made me feel very welcome. The same can be said about the nurse. Just super nice people. Meeting Dr. Wier for the first time wasn't exactly the same experience. She doesn't quite go out of her way to be over-friendly, and clearly it's not her style. She is VERY knowledgeable, I mean beyond impressive. I've seen other dermatologists before, but Dr. Wier clearly knows her stuff more. I can see how some may see it arrogant, but it's also kind of comforting. While I was there, I decided to ask about a couple other issues I've noticed. I have an issue on my arms, that my past primary care doctor advised me to use salt scrubs on. Apparently, that was completely wrong, and Dr. Wier let me know it. Also, I noticed some spots on my legs that she looks at, and she told me that I am just clearly allergic to fragrances and dyes in soaps and detergents. Next thing I know, Dr. Wier is taking away everything I use. I always have used expensive soaps and creams from Lush and Origins, and Dr. Wier made sure to tell me that not only are they aggravating my skin, but it was a huge waste of my money. Apparently, no 'age defying' product, like eye creams, work, in her eyes at least. I am now on a regiment of only the most basic and gentle of soaps, with the fewest of ingredients. It's taking some getting used to, but in the end, I'm certain it's helping. In the end, as I said, I will stay a regular patient. I'm comfortable with Dr. Wier, and feel I could come to her with anything and she would be the right person to treat it. Even more impressive, she sent me home with almost ten pages of informational sheets, so I wouldn't forget what we talked about. Who does that? That's awesome! There's no way for me to screw anything up! Is it fair that I am taking one star off because of her bedside manner? That's debatable. Maybe at my next visit, she will end up getting the fifth star. For now, I'll leave it at four, but still say, she's worth a visit! read more

I was extremely pleased with my visit to Dr. Wier's office. Okay, like other Yelpers have mentioned, her office isn't flashy. There are chairs and walls and a small window to talk to the receptionist. Plenty of literature and reading material available (and it looks like her office keeps current articles available). My appointment with her was due to a referral from my PCP Dr. Kevin Hunt (also very good). She thoroughly checked all my moles and at the end of the appointment said she could actually remove 2 right then and there or I could have scheduled another appoinment. I said go for it. The nurse came in and prepped the room and I had the moles removed and I was out the door in a total of 2 hours after a full exam and two moles removed. I loved that she was very kind, listened, was thorough, explained everything she was doing or looking for and was very down to earth. As others have mentioned, I think she's been practicing a very long time but she reallys seems to be be extremely in tune with current treatment plans, drugs, and all things dermatological. I'll admit that Dr. Wier's low reviews here on Yelp made me apprehensive about using her after she was one of two dermatologists recommended to me by my (excellent) primary care physician, who assured me that Dr. Wier "really knows her stuff." I'm glad I trusted my doctor more than I did the faith that I put in these Yelp stars, because I had an excellent experience with Dr. Wier and will not hesitate to use her again. I did not wait long for an appointment; the doctor was on time for my appointment (I don't think I've ever *not* waited for a dermatologist); her office staff was friendly and efficient; no one tried to sell me products and cosmetics, and I definitely left her office with the impression that Dr. Wier indeed "knows her stuff." Although I also found her to be very kind and engaging, Dr. Wier, based on my experience, has a pragmatic and academic approach to dermatology. If you are looking to be pampered with a "spa experience" and tantalized by sparkly marketing about the hottest new cosmetic breakthroughs, don't go to Dr. Wier. You'll leave disappointed and she doesn't need the negative reviews. read more

I was really impressed how on top of it this office was (especially on a Friday). I called for an appt on Wednesday, however their office was closed on Wednesday. But I left a message and I received a call the following day with time available. Lucky for me, I was able to get in early Friday afternoon. From the time I arrived, the staff was attentive, quick, courageous, and very professional. Once Dr. Weir came into the room, never did I ever feel rushed. She answered all of my questions, provided lots of documentation, supplied samples until the prescription that i needed to be filled, and had an overall great demeanor. I visited Dr. Weir after reading some reviews from this website, Yelp. Her offices are in a very nice professional building. The actual space in which she practices could be modernized a bit but it does the job. The office staff and one nurse with whom I dealt were quite friendly. This is almost uncommon nowadays -- I found myself surprised at how cordial and helpful they were. I had one or two questions and they were politely and warmly answered. Dr. Weir herself has been practicing for many years -- I suspect several decades. She is quite knowledgeable. She explained what she was doing before she did it. She also instructed me on how to care for my condition and why each aspect of what she instructed me to do was necessary. Although Dr. Weir was efficient, she was never rushed. Her "bedside manner" was excellent. She provided me with handouts to remind me as to what I needed to do (in case I forget her instructions). In summary, based on my experience, I cannot understand why anyone would not whole heartedly recommend Dr. Weir and her office. Five stars out of five. read more

Dr Wier is an amazing professional. J.H's review seems to have been made based on a childhood visit by a mother and daughter who seemed unconcerned by the prospect of skin cancer, just because certain moles had been present since she was a child. You can't review a medical professional on that basis. In 2009 I had what looked like a bad insect bite on my shin after returning from Hong Kong at Christmas. After 3 months I was referred to Dr Wier. She walked in, and from 6 ft away correctly diagnosed a Squamous Cell Carcinoma. She asked me to cancel my afternoon appointments and removed it in her surgery within an hour. It was sent for analysis and thankfully hadn't spread. Yes, I had a large scar, because the cancer was 1cm by then, and she had to remove the margins around the lump for safety. She made the scar as minimal as possible, and I view it as a blessing not a curse. That large but neat scar is a reminder that fate gave me skin cancer, and a dedicated and knowledgeable professional stopped it from threatening my life. Will you sometimes wait a long time in Dr Wier's surgery? Yes - usually because she is dealing with a situation like mine asap. And yes, when you're not that person being dealt with, the wait can be too long for those of us trying to fit appointments into our own work or lunch hours. And that probably should be addressed by more effective appointment allocation. But one day, the person Dr Wier delays other appointments for, and devotes an hour to treating - may be you... And then, like me, you will be eternally grateful you have received such personal and swift care. read more

I have been dealing with a skin condition for several months now. For the first few, my issue was barely a nuisance but towards the end of summer I needed to see a dermatologist, who misdiagnosed me. The medication I was given worsened the situation, so I desperately needed to see a new dermatologist. Katherine Weir accepts my insurance and it wasn't difficult to make an appointment. I found the office a bit difficult to find and it's certainly very mid-1990s bare bones. The staff are all very nice, and I guess Dr. Weir is as well. She diagnosed me properly very quickly (after nearly an hour or so wait), but things go down hill from there. When I came back in two weeks I was doing much, much, much better - nearly cured. Well, my condition wasn't going away that easily, so I asked for a refill on my prescriptions which was taken care of. However, there wasn't enough to make the issue go away. I've called multiple times and she refuses to refill my prescription again. I've offered to come in, but she says it's not going to benefit me at all. I was given the BS line of "your skin is always changing; every day 5 people come in and I tell them the same thing, so go to Whole Foods and use this soap then call me next week." I'm sorry, but no. I've now spent my week and weekend suffering and looking for a new dermatologist. I'm going to have to end up going to some third-rate clinic just so I can get this treated properly and pay out-of-pocket. Doctor, there is a difference between skin changing over a short period of time and a treatable issue coming back (or not totally going away in the first place). I'll be in contact with NMH and my insurance company to see if I can get a refund. read more

I should have taken into consideration the reviews that questioned why there was never anyone else in waiting room. At first I was happy for the little to no wait, but then I realized why so empty. Not only did Dr. Wier's treatment not work, it made my condition worse. She is incapable of processing feedback or admitting when she's wrong. She told me to stay the course for several appointments even though the course was running for months and there was no sign of improvement. Someone else mentioned she was dismissive, glancing quickly before making her diagnosis, but I found her to be more than dismissive but combative! Sad to have wasted my time and money. The convenient location did nothing to make up for the bad experience. I should make the trip to better service elsewhere next time so it's worth the time and the money. read more

I went to Dr. Wier for 18 months and found her to be rude, arrogant, judgmental and insistent on continuing treatment that were clearly not working. She's very old school and "skin-shamed" me for my tattoos and history of using tanning beds. I never felt like she listened to what I said either. Don't waste your time with her. read more

I would not recommend Dr. Wier to anyone. Same as another review - it is a bad sign when you can get an appointment the same day you call. I had an allergic reaction on my face and her treatment made it worse and I was asking questions about things and she was beating around the bush, and got very defensive and 'pushy'. Dr. Wier is great and she has tons of experience. I like her approach, which is usually the "let's try everything before we resort to drugs to help you" kinda deal. She's a no-nonsense kinda lady who likes to pinpoint the item causing the problem as well as fixing the problem itself. Her bedside manner is great and she provides thorough explanations. This is a great thing but this is also the cause of the 4 star review and not 5 star... I think because she does care she wants you to understand how to fix your problem she maybe over-explains things, and that folks, takes time. I've had to wait upwards of 1.5 hours to see her on a couple of occasions, so if you go there, check with the receptionists to gauge what a realistic timeframe would be to see the doctor. I needed a procedure done, and went to Yelp to find a reputable dermatologist. When i saw Dr. Wier's name, she sounded familiar. As it turns out, I used her over 10 years ago, along with other members of my family. So i went happily to see her last week. Dr Wier performed a surgical procedure this Tuesday, and today, i am amazed how quickly the problem got resolved and already nearly healed. Dr Wier is a very compassionate and extraordinary experienced doctor. Great bedside manner. And affordable. I absolutely hate giving bad reviews, especially since I really liked Dr Wier as a person which is why I gave her 2 stars versus 1 but from a professional standpoint, I feel obligated to share my experience since I chose her based on her Yelp reviews. I only wish that someone like JH would've shared theirs prior to my visit. I went to Dr. Wier back in June (2009). My initial call and appointment were great - she and her staff are very friendly and helpful. To keep it short, I had a couple moles removed. She said it would take 4-6 weeks for the holes to close/skin to grow back, it took more than 4 months and I assure you I followed her after procedure instructions to the last detail. I was literally in tears the day after my procedure when I saw how deep the holes were. I am not a vain person and have learned my lesson about sun exposure but I still care about what my body looks like and having had another mole removed years earlier by the same procedure in Atlanta that you could barely see months after it was removed I was incredibly disappointed in the procedure. I still have 2 very visible scars and am now going on my second month of scar therapy to try and repair the damage done. read more

Initially I was pleased with Dr Wier's treatments, but that all changed when she removed 4 moles (all of which turned out to be benign thankfully) and used a procedure that has left me with permanent scarring...i have large, raised circular scars that are 5 times larger than the size of the mole...i was told that the procedure used is a very outdated method - and also found out that this 1+ hr procedure cost me & my insurance company $4,000!!! To remove 4 moles - are you kidding me? Ridiculous. I rarely write reviews, but this deserves mention. I found Dr. Wier via Yelp (I read the rave reviews and decided to make an appointment). I have rarely visited a dermatologist but, due to a rash and some minor adult acne, I decided to go. I first must say that her staff was very kind and helpful. I would, however, not at all recommend Dr. Wier. She looked at my skin for a moment, and then - almost immediately - began her speech. This is something she has obviously repeated a thousand times over (she has sheets of paper with her speech written out, so she just reads it and underlines parts of it for you). When I tried to ask questions, she would not let me finish. Each time she interrupted. I was attempting to ask her about products - different makeup/lotions/cleansers - that I might be able to use because there are so many views on products, chemicals, organic vs. non-organic, etc. Unfortunately, her only response was, "I cannot tell you what to use, everyone is different, I cannot give you recommendations." (all of this said with an attitude). So I actually tried again, thinking she just didn't understand that I wanted her professional opinion. Well, it did not work. I was so frustrated at this point, and this was only 5 minutes into my appointment! So the rest of the visit just got worse from there. She finished her speech (underlining more of her instructions on her prepared sheets) and repeated to me again, several times, that our skin changes and everyone is different so she cannot give me recommendations. She continued to say that it is all up to me?? (how this is helpful, I have no idea). Then she prescribed the usual medications and that was it. When I asked her about how long people stay on medication, she said (and I quote), "tell me about your stress." Needless to say, I did not know how to respond to this very broad, question, I guess? Anyway, she had an attitude the entire time, did not help me feel at ease, and generally just seemed rude. She was not trying to create a personal relationship and she was certainly not listening. The visit ended when she left the room without saying goodbye. I will be finding another doctor. read more

Dr. Wier was my doctor several years ago and although she and her staff were kind, I was very disappointed with the quality of the services. I had 4 moles removed (and have had others removed by other doctors) and was so disappointed. It took 2 hours to remove 4 small moles and the skin was very poorly sewn. So poor that other doctors have commented on my scars. Like one of the other reviewers, she also gave me her literature and did her speech. It was weird. read more

I visited Dr. Wier on the recommendation of a friend to check out a spot on my leg. I was able to get in on the same day. I found Dr. Wier to be patient and very knowledgeable. She explained everything in great detail and didn't go over my head. I've been to other dermatologists in the past and always felt like they were a spa and not a doctor's office. Dr. Wier is definitely a professional and not there to sell products. Go see Dr. Wier if you want a doctor who cares about educating her patients and will provide you with great care. I found this doctor visit was fine, the parking situation is terrible. I find Wier to be a little trigger happy and assumes the worst. It was a waste of my time and money and now I am having problems with the billing issue with her. She did non needed "surgery" and her medical diagnosis on me was way off, I have visited two other doctors since. I will never ever go to back. I was looking for a dermatologist and figured it would take months to be able to get into one but picked Dr. Wier from my list of providers. I called in the morning and was able to get in that day at lunch much to my surprise. It thought it was a little weird that they made the appointment for me without even taking my name down. I went to the appointment and was disappointed that she was not able to help me specifically as to why I was there in the first place. She wanted me to try 4 different types of ointment and there were specific instructions as to when, how much and how often I was to use these medications and I had to go back in 4 weeks with the one liked the best. Well, none of them helped my problem but we picked one. I was then supposed to go back in 1 month but this time when I went back, I waited 45 mins in the waiting room and was about to walk out when I was finally called in. Yes, there was a sign that stated there may be a wait so they could give each patient amble time with them blah...blah...blah...whatever, 45 mins is a bit much. I was supposed to go back in 2 more months but ended up cancelling it on my way there because I was not about to waste more time in that waiting room when she wasn't being of much help anyway. I had to pay a $20 co-pay each time I went in and it was getting a bit much when I wasn't happy with the service anyway. I always felt like I was being lectured by her. She blamed my problem on heredity even though neither of my parents or grandparents ever has this issue. I never rescheduled my appointment. read more

She is not only an MD but she is into alternative medicine as well. i went in for excemza which i had for 10 years and I told her i was tired of masking the problem with medication and wanted to cure the problem. She told me to give up dairy which I did and it cured right up and to take vinigar baths. She is cool in my book read more

I don't know why Dr. Weir doesn't have better reviews - she's a phenomenal doctor. I had a few dermatological issues that I came to her with. She was so knowledgeable, and actually teaches you rather than speaking in doctor jargon and writing a prescription. She's also incredibly knowledgeable about products made without irritants - which is a big help. She ended up finding out I was allergic to food dye all this time, even though both of my parents are doctors! Thank goodness for Dr. Weir. read more

Dr Wier spends a lot of time with each patient, which is nice, but tends to opt against treating ailments using medications. She provided me with about 3 articles regarding each skin condition I had, and how to treat them without medication. However, she was quite interesting and down to earth, but I was really looking for a doc who would treat my conditions head on, in a medicinal way, not a long-term care treatment, that may or may not work. I've been a patient of Dr. Wier for over 20 years. I know her because she treated a client of mine who was literally dying of a toxic skin poisoning that no other doctor was able to treat. It would be nice for once to find a doctor (and his or her staff) who actually cares about the patients. Many times when you need to speak to your doctor you end up talking through the staff, which shouldn't be a bad thing. But when you've got childish, incapable staff who treat you like they would rather be filing their nails than dealing with you, it makes things a bit difficult. I have never met a staff (and I've been seeing different doctors for the better part of 10 years about my condition) who treated me the way Katherine Weir's did. If you like being hung up on because you are simply trying to ask a question about your medical problem and/or having the person talk to you like you are her worst enemy then Weir's office is the place for you. Can't say dealing with Weir herself was much better because at the end of the day I felt like just another bill to the insurance company. Dealing with anything medical is never a pleasant experience. And being treated horribly by people from whom you are seeking help just makes things that much harder. read more
