Mainlander - Cucumber vinegar salad

Mainlander

Central West End

Mainlander. WOW. I knew it was supposed to be incredible…read morebecause getting an invitation is apparently easier than getting into the White House ... but I honestly didn't know what to expect. I was also slightly nervous because I'm a "please show me the menu before I commit" kind of girl. I didn't want trout or rabbit. They assured me there would be no rabbit, so I took a chance. And I'm SO glad I did. The service was incredible, we had the absolute best table, and we were there celebrating our anniversary--which made the whole night feel extra special. The food? WOW. Pork Ala, amazing salad, and a spiced pear drink that may be one of the best drinks I've ever had. But cheesy, au gratin lion's mane was the headliner! We also had a special dessert, cheesecake and sparklers Then there's the whole vibe. It's Hawaiian, romantic, quirky and completely unexpected, with adorable décor and little hints of Elvis sprinkled in. The host was great about explaining the locally farm-raised ingredients and the story behind the food. It felt less like going out to dinner and more like being invited into someone's very cool, very delicious little world. I'll admit, paying all that money up front for an experience I hadn't even had yet, made me a little nervous. But now? Totally worth it! Mainlander is unlike anything else I've experienced in St. Louis. Unique, intimate & delicious!

September Sampler at Mainlander STL…read more We did the late 8:30 PM seating and ended up staying until around 11 PM. Overall, it was a really interesting dining experience, with Polynesian-inspired food, unique decor, great service, and a cocktail pairing that was a highlight of the evening. The tidbits were really good, and the cucumber vinegar salad was pleasantly refreshing. The Denver danbing was something I had never tried before, and I enjoyed it. The pork was fall-apart tender and delicious. A few dishes didn't work as well for me. The spaetzle wasn't appealing in either texture or appearance. The summer stone fruit streusel was much too sweet for my taste and had a very jam-like consistency. I also didn't think the rainbow chard gratin paired particularly well with the pork. The baked no-bake cheesecake was a delectable dessert and one of my favorites of the night. The cocktail pairing was excellent, and the service throughout the evening was great. I also appreciate that the restaurant includes a fair-wage service model, so there was no additional tip expected. Overall, Mainlander is definitely an interesting experience if you enjoy trying creative dishes and something outside the ordinary. Not every dish was a hit for me, but there were several memorable ones, and I enjoyed the experience.
