Going just a few miles in either direction you can get to the bigger beach towns of Emarald Isle and Atlantic Beach, but this small town has no hotels, no over crowded beaches, and no hustle and bustle of the big beach towns. The beaches were very clean, we lucked out with perfect weather, and just a short drive either way, we could have our pick of dining options and shopping. Unfortunately, not many pictures to share, as i spent most of my time on the beach with no phone, it was the reset I needed! Hoping to get another invite back!

It's located about ten minutes south of Morehead City and a mere three hour drive from Raleigh. The condo we stayed at was directly on the beach, so no issues with parking, but I did see several parking lots designated to beach parking on 58/Salter Path Road. The beach itself was nice and relaxing without all of the crowds that beaches unlike Wrightsville Beach have. There aren't many options for food. There's a Food Lion on 58 and one night we ate at the delicious Amos Mosquitos. That was about a 15 minute drive but totally worth it. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle beaches, then I say visit Pine Knolls Shores for a little R&R.

We were told this would be a good spot to find trails to go for a short run, and it was true. There was plenty of trails, to safely walk and run on, rather than along the busy road with beach bums driving by at crazy speeds. There is plenty of parking and nicely maintained trails we found. After our run, we decided to poke into the fort it self, which was free to enter, and we explored some of the space, and some of the educations exhibits. They had a little bit of something for everyone, and tried to make the visitors center exciting and fun for kids. I'd 100% visit this spot again, maybe when it's not so hot, but either way, we enjoyed our visit. The park and fort are well maintained, and preserved, with clean restrooms, and staff to answer any questions you might have.

Even a massive covered shelter with a snack bar and lockers to keep your stuff in. Oh yeah, did I mention all of this is FREE?? Even at 3:00pm, the beach wasn't over crowded and there was plenty of parking. On rainy days, you can forgo the beach and check out the Fort Macon museum. There are even trails you can walk! Not hard to spend an entire day here! There were park rangers patrolling to keep everyone safe and maintain the beauty of the park. Not much more you can ask for.

We existed on the side of the main road and got off the bus as quickly as possible. When the bus returned we were told we had to move. Four police officers walked by, and one officer made her concern know insisting that we move because one lane will not be closed. There were still two lanes and the traffic kept moving. It was enough road for the outer lane to shift over and the enter lane to shift over with no backed up or stalled traffic. The traffic never stop. We moved but had to fine a way to pick up three other passengers, so the driver circled the block on the left side and we were able to wait at the stop light until they crossed the street to get on the bus. There were no vehicles behind us at the stop light as we waited for them. We then left NC Seafood Festival with a mindset of not returning at all. We had a parking problem in 2024, our bus found parking at the Police station, sad. There was another bus and they had the same problem, no where to park. This year , 2025 the same problem, no where to park the bus. The Seafood Festival does not accommodate all groups. Only if you are driving a smaller vehicle is accommodating. The officer was not friendly or understanding even though she may have been doing her job. Well, the other three officers response was like it was no problem because they could see that we were leaving. If this event is for the public and open to all, then please accommodate all, small vehicles or large like a chartered bus. No plans to return.

Although it rained earlier in the day before we arrived, it was not raining while we were there. Sunday the 4th 2015. To us it was perfect not many people decide to go out in the rain. The food... ugh fried everything. I even went into a few restourants and NO ONE had raw oysters on the half shell. Seafood festival without raw oysters? Needless to say we walked out spending nothing on food, thank god i would have gained 20 pounds just holding the food. We bought postcards from a local store and called it a day after being there for 30 minutes.

For instance, the Sprunt building started as a flour mill and a hominy mill. The structure was renovated in 1919 and became the central trading office for cotton bales, eventually growing into one of the world's largest and busiest cotton-exporting companies. The bales left the Cape Fear River port's docks to be shipped directly to England, Europe, and other parts of the United States, and remained fully operational until 1950. After the shipping port declined, the complex was abandoned and deteriorated to the point that it was scheduled for complete demolition. Fortunately, local developers stepped in to save the buildings, preserving the original architecture, heart pine beams, and exposed brickwork. The marketplace officially opened in 1976. It was the very first successful "adaptive reuse" historic preservation project in the state. Today, the Cotton Exchange is a wonderful, bustling mixture of locally owned restaurants and specialty shops. While exploring the multi-level halls, I really enjoyed viewing the built-in hallway exhibits filled with vintage photographs, educational storyboards, and antique tools tracing the complex's port history. I have since learned of a few treasures I missed while visiting, so I am already planning a return trip to find the rest and explicitly check out the Wilmington Walk of Fame installation out in the courtyards! It is a fantastic destination for exploring downtown, offering a large parking lot where merchants will validate your parking ticket with a purchase.

And I was surprise with the lack of local goods (eg olive oil place is all imported but no info on the labels). Probably could have enjoyed a light meal here but not my kind of place - too tourist trappy.

Decided to stop here on a rainy day…read more Kinda a big thrift store its too bad nothings really priced. Everything looks messy, the roof leaks, it smells like cigarette smoke, and its dusty. The a lot of the items that are priced are really high for what they are. Most ppl that go to thrift stores don't have a lot of money. Nothings really organized. In the book corner, Books are falling all over the place. ( not priced) Cds and movies are (not priced. ) Some of the electronics tvs, computer monitors are priced but they want 25$ for a ten year old lcd tv/ monitor. Kids toys are missing pieces or are broken.( not priced) Board games some are missing pieces or cardboard is ripped.( not priced) Blankets, towels, sheets are all mixed in and only the nicer looking ones are taped and priced. The electric kitchen stuff like coffee makers are priced but they are only a few dollars cheaper then new store price. (They seem to look up the items what they sell for new and knock 20% off) They make prices up on the fly. I asked about a child's play boat with out a price. The women running the counter said "oh theres no price. id do $10.) It was Prob about 20 inch long and 6 inches wide. Doesn't sound bad but its missing all the toy pieces, the boat was broken and it was super dusty. For a smaller one with all the pieces online its 20$. For me not worth it in the store. Either way making up prices on the fly isn't impressive. I asked about movies they wanted 3$ each. Most places in havelock are 1$ just to get rid of them. Little kids clothing is kinda sorted with size but not gender there was a round rack not sorted at all in size. ( not priced) Some "nicer" dresses were marked 10$. Most of the items I saw were not priced (annoying to keep asking well how much) They don't appear to take debit cards either. They have a sign that says "cash and check. Atm outside." Im my opinion Theres better thrift stores. In morehead theres hope mission which has furniture, clothing jewelry and house wares. A lot of the time, on Saturday's they have a parking sale that is just pay a donations. And in Beaufort theres fishes and loaves. Its 2 stores ones clothing and the other is house hold items. Its all pretty cheap. Some of the items someone is pricing high now but relatively speaking they have good priced items too. All prices are behind the checkout counter.

Be prepared to dig. Cash only. Kind of dirty, slightly unorganized. Nothing over priced.read more
