There isnt much to see in Vandalia IL so we looked up this dragon and thought he was rather fun. For a dollar he breathes fire. A knight is next to him minus an arm. I thought I'd Monty Pytuins black knight.

Interesting transport or a need of a quick trip across the river makes this a good destination…read more I have only rode without a vehicle for $2, but the experience is so different that my mind enjoys the trip. (As does the kid inside my companions) Standing on the dock waiting for the ferry takes patients, but kids find rocks to throw in the river during the "I am bored moments". (I would set a visible boundary for how close they can get to the river) Watching the tug boat pitch the ferry sideways as it maneuvers from the side is intriguing. The ferry does not take long to unload and be loaded so be ready. The trip is surprisingly quick and breezy then the Mark Twain memory (plus pics) is all that is left. http://bancroft.berkeley.edu/Exhibits/MTP/mississippi.html While they have a $4 rate for the horse & rider, the new adventurers must be motorcycles because for $5 they seem to be really willing to pay the ferry man. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don't_Pay_the_Ferryman

There are inviting little shops filled with crafts, antiques, gifts, sweets and wine. Strolling through the streets of this unique community, I saw a variety of restaurants I want to try and wanted to browse the specialty shops and stay in distinguished bed and breakfast inns but my time was limited. Many of these buildings have been meticulously restored over the past 50 years and today Ste. Genevieve boasts the largest and finest collection of French Creole architecture in the US. There are historic tours homes and I would suggest buying these five venues with one ticket. -1806 Jacques Guibourd House -1818 Felix Vallé State Historic Site -Ste. Great city to explore the Land of Lincoln along historic Route 66…read more Grab a map and explore what led Abraham Lincoln to the presidency during a time of unrest that led to the Civil War and ultimately his untimely death due to assignation. Recommended places to visit include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, the Old State Capital and the Lincoln Tomb. There are so many monuments and landmarks, including his law office, to explore in historic downtown Springfield. Visit the Illinois State Capitol. Tours are free. Make a reservation to the Dana-Thomas House. It contains the largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright glass and furniture in one of his designs. It was his first blank check commission. Pay your last respect to Lincoln as well as those who served in the military at the Oak Ridge Cemetery. The Lincoln Family tomb is a stunning tribute. The Illinois War Memorials honor those who served and lost their lives in WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

It has plenty of museums and historical sites available to visit and learn (mostly free or relatively cheap) with plenty of restaurants and hotels to choose from. The traffic overall isn't too congested, making it relatively easy to get around during the day (though you have to be careful of lots of one-way streets around downtown). Worth a visit if you'd like to learn more about Illinois government and history, especially of Abraham Lincoln.

Heard this was a must-see tourist attraction in St. Louis, so I HAD to see for myself! This area…read morewas really run-down and seemed really sketchy; the roads seemed pretty destroyed and surrounding buildings were mostly obliterated or inhabited. So, I wouldn't recommend visiting at night, as you never know what you may encounter. The Grafitti wall was much more longer than I thought it would be! The vibrant colors from various artists that join together to create a complete picture was truly astounding. It's actually so inspiring to see so many different artists working together, incorporating their own unique styles to create one single piece of artwork. If I took a few minutes to really take in and admire each grafitti, finishing the wall would take HOURS! I was skeptical that this mural was worth the trip to an abandoned area, but I'm truly so glad that I came to see this beauty. If you're in Saint Louis, you have to come take a look!

I've seen several mural walls throughout the US and this is by far the most extensive one I've come across. Aside from the surprising length of this mural walls the quality and the meaning behind these works of art stood out to me the most. This wall is repainted every year during the Paint Louis festival on Labor Day weekend and it will definitely be worth checking out!

Live music - I enjoyed the selection and quality of live music at the festival 3. Kimmswick - the town provides a great setting for such a festival. Highly walkable and easy to navigate without feeling like I'm getting lost. 4. The vendors that embraced the theme - props to the small handful of businesses that embraced the theme, especially The Blue Owl. The not so good: 1. Where are all the strawberries? For something billed as a strawberry festival this event had a surprising lack of them. I was looking forward to getting to try many strawberry related treats. Most vendors had nothing to do with strawberries. For the ones that did, most felt like strawberries were an afterthought. 2. What are these shops and are they open? The shops that line the streets get lost behind the booths. I couldn't tell what many of them offer or if they were open so I only visited a couple that were clearly open and made it clear what type of products they offer.

I'm no Bubba Gump, but think of the possibilities - strawberry pie, strawberry jam, strawberry-scented candles, deep-fried strawberries, strawberry ice cream, strawberry salsa... We paid $5 to park on some ball fields, then hiked our butts up a hill to get to the actual festival. The stores drug their offerings outside and sold them in tents, there were a few carni food stands, there was an 85-year old fat and balding Elvis impersonator, a kiddy train rolled through the crowded walkways repeatedly at about 30 mph, and one - yes ONE - lonely little stand selling crates of strawberries. What the heck? Major fail, Kimmswick!
