I adopted a friendly yet extremely energetic 105 lb Lab/Mastiff mix from a rescue a few months ago. While he loves his walks, he has this massive drive to play with basically everyone. This was becoming a huge challenge (and pain) in our daily walks. Getting his attention was a non starter, it was at that point I decided to seek out some individualized training (the thought of having him in a group class was laughable). I came across Karma Dog Training and put in my information for a consultation. Jeffrey got back to me later that day and we talked about my goals and expectations. Mainly, trying to establish control over this behemoth and finding games to keep his mind occupied while im out of the house. He said he would bring it up at the staff meeting the next morning to determine who would be the best fit. I got a callback from Pilla the next day. She specializes in behavior modification and is the proud owner of a great dane as well as a shelter dog. We started off slow, establishing that the overarching goal is being able to get his attention is where the training flows from. She then wanted to observe him in the house with my other dog as well as during feeding time. She made some observations (like my 1st dog guarding me like a resource against the newcomer) while at the same time making suggestions that would make my life with him easier. She then starting showing me easy to utilize signals to get his attention, we spent the day learning variations of this. After the end of the first lesson, I was able to get his attention on a daily basis. We have a lot of work to do still, but we made an impressive amount of progress, enough to get me to buy a 6 lesson pack. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus, the rest of our lessons had to be postponed after lesson 2. Being first time dog parents of a German Shepherd, my husband and I knew we couldn't train our puppy alone. We knew all of the things we didn't want her to be and we were sure of the things we wanted out of her. We wanted to be certain our pup Luna was able to come with us wherever we went and be obedient to us, her keepers, but that she also was very social and able to get along with other dogs and humans. Karma dog training was seriously our saving grace, specifically Pilla Osborn. We just completed our last training session with Pilla and we are so thankful to have been paired with her to train Luna. She was so good with her and really was able to be the communication between our pup and us! Pilla was extra kind with Luna but knew exactly how far to push Luna in her training. Amongst Luna simply being more obedient to us, she has learned all of her basic commands (Sit, down, stay, leave it, drop it, place, kennel, fetch, heel, and shake) at 5 months old. Most importantly, Pilla gave us the proper foundation to teach her anything we desire! Luna is such a friendly dog that she likes to bark at other dogs for the simple fact that she feels like she needs to meet them. We, as her parents, could do without the barking! For our last training session, Pilla brought her own dog to help us train Luna with barking at other dogs that Luna has yet to meet. We met at a quiet bark park and got to work! This was the perfect environment for Luna to work in and know that she doesn't need to bark at dogs she has yet to meet. As a preliminary matter, I only attended the one free trial puppy class so I want to qualify my opinion on this business with that in mind. But throughout my dealings with them I felt there were pros and cons and I thought that my feedback might be useful. First of all, it's important to note that this is not a local dog training company. They appear to be nationwide and many of the emails you get are standardized/ boilerplate emails. I contacted Karma because my puppy was exhibiting some concerning behaviors such as reactivity and had fear issues and I wanted to find a way to address those behaviors sooner rather than later, especially given my puppy's critical age (4 months). When I first contacted Karma I receive a standardized email with information. There was oddly no contact number initially that I could call to speak to someone over the phone. I emailed back to try and schedule a class and the next day I was emailed by the owner of the business that was Jeff himself. I was very impressed especially considering this is not a local company that the owner was emailing me directly and he provided his cell phone number. So I went ahead and called him and we talked for a while about the problems I was dealing with. He was very responsive and nice and said that he was going to be personally working on this and he would get right on it. I didn't receive a call back until the next day in the afternoon and that was only after two follow up emails from me in which I asked whether they even had the availability to help or not. I was a bit disappointed that it took so long to even get someone to call me to set something up but they indicated that their trainers were on the field/out of town etc. Essentially, I just needed to know whether I should continue my search for a trainer or whether they would be able to work me in. But once I emailed the second time, I got a call from one of their trainers and I had a great conversation with Khala and we again talked about my puppy and his issues and she suggested that I bring my dog to the puppy class that weekend where she could observe his behavior. She suggested a class that was almost an hour away from my home but she said that it would be a good class because there were fewer dogs and more importantly she would be able to observe his behavior. She did say she was dealing with a personal issue and mentioned if she were not to be able to make it she would fill in the other trainers so that they would know to be on the lookout for my puppy and observe him. Great - so we got up early that Saturday and drove close to an hour to go to this class. When I arrived, I was told the trainer I spoke to would not be present for the class. I was also told by the trainer that was present that he had not been filled in with my puppy's issues at all - and had never even heard of my puppy or the fact that the other trainer was going to be observing his behavior etc. So I had to try to fill him in there on the spot. This was a bit disheartening especially since we had gone out of our way to attend this class so that the trainer I spoke to could observe his behavior and so that we could set up a private lesson following the class. I emailed the trainer I had originally spoken to and she indicated to me that she would not be present in the class but would be there hours later. I never had a phone call or email follow up apologizing or indicating where the misunderstanding had occurred for why she wasn't able to make it or why no one on the team had been filled in with regards to my concerns with my puppy. In fact, to this date, I have received no follow up call or email. I did get a random boilerplate email from them inviting me to another puppy class. However, I will say that the location where this puppy class took place was very nice. It looked clean and the two trainers that were present were extremely friendly. Still, the class itself was too loosely structured for my taste. For example, there was an exercise called "pass the puppy" where we were supposed to pick up the other puppy (mind you there was only one other puppy in the class) but we never went through the exercise of actually exchanging puppies? One of the trainers indicated that he had only been a trainer for about a year. I ended up going a different direction for my puppy training needs. Ultimately there were pros and cons with my dealings with this company but given the fact that I kept having conversations with people (the owner/the trainer) in which they promised they would get back to me right away or in which a plan of action was initiated and not followed through - I knew this was not the best place for me. But I think if you are just looking for a puppy class in this area it's not a bad choice (which is why I'm giving it 3 stars - for the class alone). read more

I have a one and a half year old Rottweiler/American Staff mix rescue (Django) that was quite unruly. Key word here being "was." I contacted Karma Dog Training after seeing their great reviews to help me get a better handle on my little boy because he had some anxiety and aggression towards people. They got back to me pretty fast and in no time I was contacted by Khala. Let me just say that Khala is absolutely amazing. She was super patient with both Django and I. Khala came up with a personalized plan for us and was super thorough when teaching the both of us. She even provided detailed follow up emails with a recap on what we covered, what Django and I should be working on during the week, and resources such as videos and articles to help out. I really appreciated that because I forget everything. She also makes herself widely available if you have any questions before the next session. After the first session and a few days of applying what we'd learned, there was already a noticeable change in Django's behavior. He was much calmer, way less destructive, and much easier to manage when he acted out. I can't say that every dog will make as much progress after the first week as he did, as every dog learns at a different pace, but you won't regret getting help from Karma Dog Training. This whole experience has been fantastic and not only made Django and I feel more confident in ourselves, but improved our relationship as well. In short, Khala is an awesome trainer and without her help, Django and I would be totally lost. This isn't just a learning experience for your dog. Your dog's behavior doesn't just change from one day to the next. Training your dog involves YOU taking the time and effort to reinforce what your trainer has taught. If you need help managing your dog's aggressive behavior, I would HIGHLY recommend Khala and Karma Dog Training. read more

We signed up for the 5 package deal with Khala for our dog Bazzy. Bazzy was a lovely rescue for the first year we had him then around 2 years old he started being less social when out on walks and aggressive to other dogs. He never attacked any dogs but he would bark ferociously sometimes and became quite anti-social to the point we could drop him at boarding kennels when away on weekends for fear of him attacking another dog. Enter Khala! She has a connection with dogs like nothing I've ever seen, and my Dad is a vet and I grew up around dogs! She instantly understood his issue which was that he was nervous around other dogs and his barking was a defence mechanism (amongst other things). Over the 5 visits she taught us the skills to help him make him better behaved, listen to our commands and more comfortable around other dogs. He went from a dog that was on his own agenda to an attentive dog that waits to follow us downstairs instead of racing ahead. Khala often went well over time to give us the attention Bazzy needed and after every visit she would follow up with an email of personalized advice and training videos to help is in between visits. I was thoroughly impressed with Karma Dog Training!! Khala Knows her stuff. She was prompt despite the distance and great at teaching our entire family how to train our Young Great Dane to obey. I can't believe how far we came in such a short time. Our dog didn't know her name, couldn't do tricks, and had a lot of bad habits. Now our 8mth old Great Dane can sit, lay down, stay, and we have the tools to teach her any number of new tricks because Khala explained why and dogs do things and how to change the behaviors. We would tell her something we would like and she would quickly and easily show us how to accomplish the task. Pilla is amazing!! We love Karma Dog Training! After years of trial and error, we were at our wit's end on how to get our dog to not pull on walks and to walk with a loose leash. We also needed help with basic obedience (coming on command, etc.). We did a package of private sessions in our home. We saw enormous improvement after just one session with Pilla. Pilla gives you the tools to succeed. She is a truly gifted trainer. The training is as much for (if not more for) owners as the dog. Shock collars and harsh discipline methods were not remotely options for us. The positive reinforcement method is precisely what our dog needed.
