My boyfriend and I adopted a rescue pup and was told that he had some reactivity towards some dogs. We knew nothing about that topic of training but adopted him because he seemed to be a great match into our family of just the two of us. We tried some group training and self training elsewhere and were not seeing the progress that we'd like to see because we just didn't have that many tools to tackle reactivity. I found Karma Dog training and they called for some more information about our pup Xander. We were then matched with Katherine Nybakken and let me just say that I am so incredibly happy that we were matched with her. Katherine is so kind, patient, and knowledgeable. She only uses positive reinforcement techniques, which I support and only want to use for training. We ended up doing a private lesson package and it was probably the best thing we could've done for Xander. He has made so much progress on loose leash walking, reactivity to strangers in the house, reactivity to dogs outdoors, name recognition, and impulse control. Going on walks have become a more manageable and enjoyable. I cannot say enough great things about Katherine. She has made training fun for me and Xander. After each lesson she provides follow up emails that include things that we worked on and things that we need to work on. I would definitely recommend Karma Dog training and Katherine to anyone who owns a dog!
We have a (well he was three months) Golden doodle that will be doing so very specialized training. So when I called I was looking to hear certain 'responses' from the gal I first spoke to. Once I realize they were a hands off type trading, no choking collars (which I'm sure have there place. Just not for what I need, and would be a trigger to me) I was paired with a very gentle, slow paced lady who understood quickly my needs too. My current service dog is getting ready to retire. So after a positive phone call. We made our first appt. $150/hr She arrived early, we sat out on our front porch and chatted with Bentley with us. She watched everything. And noted all the scratches on my arms (she called them 'new mom, puppy arms) When then toured our home, explained a typical daily routine with all three dogs. Toileting accidents that were still occurring. Then we came to the upper floor and our patio, throughout all of this she had begun to give Bentley treats with a key word. It was amazing how he calmed down. (Maybe she switched dogs??) We then went out back and she began to have me me do the same training. And when the ignore him. He responded instantly. (He cannot leave our property due to shots yet) So she gave us some homework for me and my husband, and then for the family. She will return in two weeks. My arms are almost healed. (They were really bad) He now also will sit. He still follows the main 'key' word. She has warned us about age (teenage) and we are getting him fix very soon. So there may be a bit of a back-slide. But the is ok. I'm not in a super fast rush to get him trained. His pace along with my pace. I am so grateful for this group. I've already recommended them to a couple with a big puppy. I hope they can help. Here is a picture of my boy. It's not current. He was 23 lbs in early March and he is 40 lbs now. The vet told us, "He's going to be a big one" Which is perfect for my needs. read more

In praise of Katherine- I was given a tiny puffball for my birthday last year that turned into a mini gremlin who was an absolute terror! After some research (and even looking into month long intensive training camps) I found Karma Dog. Karma Dog believes in positive reinforcement and patience- with your pet and yourself. I can say that our private sessions were always amazing! Katherine was patient and kind, gave advice and little tips and tricks geared toward my dog's age and breed, and turned my little terror into a well behaved one year old pup that other people want to be around. I would 100% recommend Karma Dog to others out there- and if you are lucky, you will be paired with Katherine! read more

We started working with Katherine Nybakken about 10 months ago, shortly after we "foster failed" and decided to adopt two rescue dogs -- a pair of hyberbonded, undersocialized, fearful lab mixes. While the dogs were super sweet and loving with our family, we knew we had a ton of work to do, and I was pretty overwhelmed by the task at hand. Katherine helped us figure out our priorities and has guided us through a plan for both dogs. In addition to the usual obedience stuff (sit, down, stay, go to place, offleash recall, loose leash walking and hiking etc.), Katherine has worked with us on a catalog of more complicated issues as well--leash reactivity, separation anxiety, doggy socialization, fears of new people both inside and outside the house. She uses only positive reinforcement methods and has been so patient and calm with our especially fearful dog, who barked at her (a lot) every time she arrived for months and months. Katherine guided us through a successful desensitization/counterconditioning program to address our fearful dog's fear of strangers outside the house and we are now working on visitors inside the house as well. She also dogsits for us, and our dogs are always so perfect after they've spent a few days with her! read more

I hired Karma Dog Training a few months ago to help me train my one+-year old puppy. He was pulling on me constantly while walking, and unwilling to come to me when called. He was stubborn, wouldn't listen when called, and fairly fearful of other people. Katherine came in and right away was able to gain command, and respect, of Bailey. She is incredibly insightful into what he needed to begin to feel comfortable with her. It just got better after that. She showed me many techniques for asserting myself when we were walking and when I needed him to pay attention to me. She is patient, knowledgeable, and was able to design a training regime that fit my lifestyle as well as what Bailey needed. She spent our time together productively and always had time for questions either during, or after, our training sessions. I highly recommend her for all your training needs. She is exemplary at her profession. read more
