Wore it out of the store

After taking a Muir Woods tour, our guide took us to Sausalito for lunch and we decided skip the ride back and explore the town for the day. On the way in, our guide mentioned Karl as being a great spot for vintage finds. After eating lunch at Scoma's and shopping around the touristy spots, I made the trek back to Karl the Store. After walking in I instantly fell in love with this store and pretty much everything in it. I didn't have a ton of time before my ferry ride back to SF, but I knew I wanted to take something home. I saw that they had the Merz b Schwanen t-shirts (the one's Carmy wears in The Bear), and I've considered trying one, but then I saw this vintage volunteer firefighters jacket with chain stitching on the back. I live in SC and had already bought denim jacket earlier that day so I was in no need for another jacket, but knew I wasn't leaving without it. Before I left, I ended up chatting with the owner, Dennis. He shared some stories with me and we geeked out about vintage jackets for a minute which resulted in him insisting I try on the amazing one he was wearing. Next time I'm back in SF for work, I could see myself taking the ferry over solely to go to this store again, shop around, and chat up Dennis again.

I did locate this shop on yelp as it came up as having some vintage inventory.. They have an assortment of vintage jackets, flannels and some decor accessories like the lamps I photographed, very cool mid century pair, it's rare to find a pair like these. While most of the shop carries new items, a great variety of clothing items, accessories, and I especially liked the perfume they carry, I think it was a unisex scent that's was earthy and fresh, which came in candle form too. Not only would I say this is kind of a tourist niche type of shop, but certainly not typical tourist swag, it's also a great shop for holiday gifts, unique things you don't see just any old place. I would suggest stopping in to see if you can find a treasure. Happy Shopping

original art and photography along with vintage clothing and jewelry. It's all in this amazing store very well organized and displayed.

Expect the unexpected here. There is so much that is unique and extraordinary. Art, photography, gifts, clothing, everything from beautiful furnishings to original creations. There's a plethora of great things to own and give. I have done both. Perhaps the most charming is the proprietor himself. Hey, remember Cheers, the wonderful bar sitcom? When you walk into Karl The Store, Dennis is behind the counter greeting you like you're an old friend. He has a story for every item that you might be interested in but most importantly he's interested in what brought you in and who you are. And his smile is affable, such a genuine treasure. I have bought gifts, T-shirts, photographs, books, antiques, even matchbooks. It's not the kind of store you will find anywhere else and that's because it's right in Sausalito, which is eclectic and creative in its own right. I love the store, and it's my favorite place to shop when I don't know what to buy for someone special. I always find it here. Oh, here's the tip of the day: Dennis' wife Kate, makes the most amazing pies. If you've got a hankering for a fresh flaky, cherry pie or key lime, or a perfect NY cheesecake, you will find it at Karl The Store. It's literally a treasure trove of things to see, feel, and in this case eat.

    Vintage Hermes ties, anyone?

Vintage and rare finds. It's the "anti-Amazon." You will want it all. Yelp doesn't dig haikus so I'm going to say that you can also buy pies here on Sunday mornings, before they run out!

100 stars for Slice of Sausalito's pies. The absolute best pie I've ever eaten. Incredible! I got pumpkin, pecan, and marionberry. All delicious!! 5" pies are $15. Totally recommended!!

Karl the Store is so one-of-a-kind/unique and I am proud to have it here in Sausalito. It's just a slice of life - a little history, some local color and some cool new items. Dennis, the owner says that everything in his store has a story and he is right. Wander in and you will immediately find things that strike your fancy - vintage Bauer pottery, leather goods, hand made jewelry or fresh-baked pies (locals swear by these). I found some CBD cream to give as a gift here. Dennis was quick to personalize my choice with another selection. He is so personable and kind. This store has the coolest clothing, vintage items and toiletries. It's hard to describe the variety here. You need to come in and see. I recommend it for gifts - especially for hard-to-buy friends. When you are finishes shopping, treat yourself with a coffee or pastry next door!

The Il Bistonte Italian Leather bag I fell in love with. Perfect vintage vibes. Such a quality piece that checked all the boxes.

In 2003, the company was revitalized by husband-and-wife product design and business team, who thoughtfully reinvented the brand. I stopped by today, with my mom, to buy my sister some gifts for her wedding. I loved the new colors I saw - they had some yellow bowls and bulb vases that I was seriously tempted to buy, in addition to the other items. What I didn't love was the lack of customer service. I don't expect or want to be waited on hand and foot, but a simple acknowledgement would have been nice, rather than having multiple employees just watching us the entire time. I ended up purchasing from the seconds section and buying less than anticipated due to the overall vibe. I try to be understanding, and perhaps something was off for them today. Regardless, I was so uncomfortable in the store that I waited outside while our items were gift wrapped.
