A great place to pop into while you wait for your Equator coffee next door. A relatively small store but with seemingly endless items to offer, from clothes to art to specialty items large and small. Really a hidden gem! Dennis, the store owner, was just as kind as everyone says he is, and I was happy we got to chat a bit. After taking a Muir Woods tour, our guide took us to Sausalito for lunch and we decided skip the ride back and explore the town for the day. On the way in, our guide mentioned Karl as being a great spot for vintage finds. After eating lunch at Scoma's and shopping around the touristy spots, I made the trek back to Karl the Store. After walking in I instantly fell in love with this store and pretty much everything in it. I didn't have a ton of time before my ferry ride back to SF, but I knew I wanted to take something home. I saw that they had the Merz b Schwanen t-shirts (the one's Carmy wears in The Bear), and I've considered trying one, but then I saw this vintage volunteer firefighters jacket with chain stitching on the back. I live in SC and had already bought denim jacket earlier that day so I was in no need for another jacket, but knew I wasn't leaving without it. Before I left, I ended up chatting with the owner, Dennis. He shared some stories with me and we geeked out about vintage jackets for a minute which resulted in him insisting I try on the amazing one he was wearing. The pies were solid and well made. The crust had a nice buttery crunch, and the fruit fillings tasted fresh without being overly sweet or spiced. The Montmorency cherry had a pleasant tartness, and the Dutch apple kept a good texture. The frozen chicken pot pie was easy to bake and satisfying. I did locate this shop on yelp as it came up as having some vintage inventory.. They have an assortment of vintage jackets, flannels and some decor accessories like the lamps I photographed, very cool mid century pair, it's rare to find a pair like these. While most of the shop carries new items, a great variety of clothing items, accessories, and I especially liked the perfume they carry, I think it was a unisex scent that's was earthy and fresh, which came in candle form too. Not only would I say this is kind of a tourist niche type of shop, but certainly not typical tourist swag, it's also a great shop for holiday gifts, unique things you don't see just any old place. I usually go into Karl the Store after getting coffee at Equator. I really like the curation of items from art to candles to clothing. It's all pretty high quality items and the prices reflect that but it's also a small business and I understand the time that goes into finding, buying and holding all these things. I wanted to share a particularly nice experience I had at the store. I had my eye on a bomber jacket that was just expensive enough that after visiting twice I was hesitant to pull the trigger. I googled the item and found that it had recently gone on sale online for nearly 50% off what it was in the store. Like I said above, I want to support local businesses but the difference in price would have been hundreds of dollars. I mentioned this at the store with the nice gentleman who is always there and just asked for a small discount to try and bridge the gap between the two different prices. What he did next really impressed me: he insisted on giving me the same price as what the jacket was on sale for at the manufacturer website. Even after I mentioned that wasn't necessary and that somewhere in the middle would be fine, he insisted that they would honor the sale price. Wow, as a customer that makes me want to go back and shop there more. I love my jacket and we'll definitely be back in the future. I wanted to share so others would appreciate that while the shop might have high end things that can be expensive, they're also extremely hospitable and kind. Today is my birthday and so I'm reflecting on gifts in my life. How incredible is it that I consider Karl the Store and its kind owner Dennis a true gift? The store itself is a mini-museum with interesting stories behind all the merchandise and the artists/creators behind the merchandise. I bring every single visitor to that store as part of the Sausalito experience and everyone loves it. It is both a store and an experience. I visit at least once a week to see what new items have come in. And, the bonus is if you happen to swing by on a Thursday, you might be able to buy one of Kate's (Dennis' wife) delicious homemade pies. Wonderful store owner and boutique in Sausalito. My husband and I stopped in while walking around the area. Even though we didn't buy anything, I was attracted to many items in the store. The owner explained how each item had a story behind it. There is a mix of clothes, housewares, and accessories inside the store. His wife also bakes pies and they are sold within the store. The owner also offered great restaurant recommendations and we ended up checking out one of the places he recommended for dinner. read more

Dennis, the owner says that everything in his store has a story and he is right. Wander in and you will immediately find things that strike your fancy - vintage Bauer pottery, leather goods, hand made jewelry or fresh-baked pies (locals swear by these). I found some CBD cream to give as a gift here. Dennis was quick to personalize my choice with another selection. He is so personable and kind. Even better than the items themselves is Dennis the owner, who makes you feel right at home to find exactly what you're looking for. Last year, we picked up a vintage Levi's sherpa jacket that has been a workhorse piece in my husband's closet. And today, I fell in love with an Il Bisonte Italian leather bag that I know will be timeless. We have decided to make this store a family tradition to visit on our hopefully annual pilgrimage to Sausilito!
