Not focused…read moreon tournament competitions, or the latest style du jour; traditional martial arts training (karate, kung fu, hapkido, judo) with an approachable teaching method. Chayon Ryu means, 'Natural Way System' - we should move in ways that are bio-mechanically friendly & efficient for humans to move. This reduces the chances for injury or long term wear & tear on the joints, and maximizes the speed & power one can develop. There are many students and instructors here who have been training for 20, 30, 40 years and their health & mobility reflect this. This is a place to train to improve the quality of your life, rather than win trophies or bar fights ;-)

This is a traditional martial arts school - not a club or a place to hang out and try a few tricks/techniques. Injuries are very rare as students and instructors treat each other with respect and patience. I started studying Chayon-Ryu when I was in high school as an almost desperate attempt to end the bullying I experienced for most of my childhood. Chayon-Ryu instilled valuable skills, confidence and life-long friendships into me. Train for more than a couple of years and the benefits, beyond learning how to kick and punch, will pour forth into your life. And if you have any children interested in learning karate, Master Sean Kim is FANTASTIC. I have never seen someone so great with kids. He is super patient and is so good at teaching the youngest of the students self-control and discipline. Try a few lessons out and I am sure you will not be disappointed.

This summer I hurt my back playing basketball right before my 6 month membership was up and the manager had me come in to have the owner recommend me the proper treatment. My membership was going to expire in a week and they did not bring up the membership they were only concerned about my health. My back has healed and I am back training again. This martial arts school is as high class as it gets for any service business in any city. I will recommend them to anyone.

But I had a…read morenegative experience trying to contact the Westchase flagship location about a serious concern connected to my experience at another affiliated location. The concern involved safety, conduct, and how issues involving staff or members were being handled. I made four separate calls to four different people, was unable to get a hold of anyone, left my callback information, and explained generally that I was trying to raise a serious concern that I believed warranted awareness or oversight. I did not receive a callback or meaningful follow-up. I am not reviewing any one person individually. My concern is that I attempted to raise a serious issue through multiple channels connected to the flagship location and was met with silence. With time, what stands out to me most is not only the original situation, but the lack of meaningful follow-up when I tried to raise it through what I understood to be appropriate channels. That kind of non-response leaves things unresolved. It also leaves the person who raised the concern carrying the consequences alone. In a martial arts environment, especially one involving physical training and close contact, trust and safety depend not only on what happens on the mat, but also on whether concerns can be raised and handled responsibly. From my experience at the time, I did not feel there was a reliable process for escalation, accountability, or member support.
