My husband and I had a late lunch here today. It can be difficult to find lunch past 2:00 pm in France and it was great to find someplace open. The menu had several options that interested me but I opted for the baked camembert with honey, salad and smoked duck breast. The cheese and smoked duck were great. My husband ordered the salad Norwegian. It was ridiculously large and could have fed 5 people (seriously). He also had a slice of cheesecake. The crust was underbaked and tasted like sugar cookies. The cheese part was pretty good. Service was attentive (we were there at shift change, which can be a challenge). I was bummed they didn't have any vin chaud that was featured. read more

I don't exactly remember what was the name of the menu that I ordered with. It came with, amazing yogurt, a basket of fresh bread, swiss style granola with milk, a bowl of fruit, a plate of butter, jelly and nutella. it is just a happy happy high carb breakfast!! The best part is this restaurant servers hot breakfast 7 AM which is very rare in France. The egg dish was also fantastic. read more

While in Bordeaux you must eat croissants.. I mean I think that is a law right? Well of course I am a law abiding citizen so I ate my croissants... OH YA. The BF and I came to Karl on 2 occasions for some light breakfast. The croissants were delicious and very affordable - 1EUR each! We enjoyed our cafe au lait and munched on croissants.. it was fabulous. They had a few basket type options that had a few different pastries, nutella and jam but they were crazy overpriced at 9-11 Euros each so we just stuck to the point of the mission and ate 4 croissants. haha Let me tell you what ISN'T fabulous about Karl... the service. Yes, I know in America we pay for service and we expect a decent level of it but the rest of the world isn't quite the same. When we sat down the restaurant was relatively empty - I think there were 3 other tables of people eating. (there are plenty of tables haha) Anyway, it took about 15 minutes for someone to come over and ask what we wanted so I was a bit ravenous at this point. We ordered our croissants and pan au chocolat plus 2 coffees and let me tell you... it took about 20 minutes for it to come. I would understand if they freshly baked my croissant but they didn't (I didn't expect them too either). Even despite the wait we decided to come back for a 2nd attempt on our last morning... I crave croissants can you tell? The service was even worse this time so needless to say I won't be back if I happen to be in Bordeaux again. read more

Petit dejeuner 10.90 Includes 2 drinks, croissant or pane au chocolate , yogurt , ham, cheese and a basket of bread. Oh and also some butter and jams. All very good. I had the pane au chocolate and a latte. The yogurt was delivered with two sugar packets. I did not use but I could see doing at least some. Service was good location nice and we sat outside. The tables were close together but I am sure that is required to keep close and leave the square open. read more

Adorable little spot in one of the squares of Bordeaux. I personally had just a coffee and bread, but just the vibe alone made it a great spot. The menu ranges from breakfast to dinner. And you can easily see that its one of those cute little spots to just pop in for a coffee. Perfect location and perfect little spot. read more

Oh Karl... three visits in two days and four dishes and five drinks later, Cafe Karl has merited my 5 stars. Seriously, without even realizing it, I walked past it three times in the past two days. Each time, either the chocolatery pastries or cheese and meat platters lured me in. After my third visit, two waiters told me (separately) that they'd see me tomorrow. Here's what drew me in (again and again): - Assiette du Soleil with sundried tomatoes, cheese, raisin bread and pesto - Assiette Provencale with roasted peppers, goat cheese, salami, grilled zucchini, tomatoes, green and black olives and olive bread - Charcuterie platter - Fromage platter Next time I'm lucky enough to make it back to Bordeaux, I'll continue to work my way thru the menu! read more

Not at all worth the money. Absolutely poor service. We sat and waited and waited and waited to make our order. Our drinks came AFTER our food, we got no bread or table service. We waited 15 minutes to order dessert. Our waiter left without putting another waiter on our table. Horrid. And for what? Salty food, stares and abandonment. read more

My husband and I stumbled into this restaurant while we were walking around on a somewhat wet, cold day. We were greeted quickly and seated in about 5 minutes. It seems to be a popular place with locals. The restaurant location was very good. We sat next to the window and we overlooked the french square and surrounding old french architectural buildings. I had the Spinach Quiche (it also came with salad), my husband ordered the ham & cheese sandwich. The ingredients were fresh and tasted very good. The dessert cream brulee was top notch! I really enjoyed the lovely strong vanilla taste. We both loved this place. The food was good, the wine was good, the service was good. They spoke good English (which is always a help, being a visitor). The price was also very reasonable. What a great place to stumble into! read more

Worst service I've had in France so far. After getting my initial bread and jams, I waited over an hour (no exaggeration -- I took out a book and read for the duration) for the main course to show up. I got up and asked my server who had either forgotten about it or didn't seem to care...? There were no apologies and a few minutes later my food showed up. The food was good which is why I'm giving it two stars, but I don't understand why there wasn't even an apology for the mistake or some sort of comp'd item (free croissant or something). The reason why I didn't get up sooner to ask is that so far I've experienced long waits for food in French restaurants, and didn't want to possibly upset the kitchen staff more than I might have already done being an ignorant American... read more

I will be honest... it's been five years since I visited Bordeaux. However, remembering the chocolat chaud a l'ancienne at Cafe Karl still makes my mouth water. The service was reasonable, the food was fresh, the bathrooms clean, but the hot chocolate..... oh, the hot chocolate. Mon Dieu! It redefined my idea of what hot chocolate really is, and my experience was not limited to powder packets with freeze dried marshmallows, mind you. This was and still is the best I have ever had by far. Rich, creamy, chocolatey.... absolute perfection. If you are going to Bordeaux, order the chocolat chaud a l'ancienne at Cafe Karl. Came here for " brunch " and it was busy! We waited a while until we were able ro give our order. My husband ordered the brunch menu. It was the saddest brunch I have ever seen. Yogurt was canned ham and cheese were slapped on a plate stiff cold. The bowl of eggs were just ok. The menu came with a bread a choice and a drink as well as a fruit cup. All for 21€ this is nuts the plate was clearly pre done maybe from last night because it was refrigerated cold. Now my dish the provincial its basically a charcuterie platter again pre set up from the night before because the mixed " cooked " veggies were ice cold. Stopped in for lunch at an odd hour (between 2-3) and were greeted immediately. There were tables available and great looked specials on the board. I had the Gazpacho special from the board. It was served with an olive bread, jambon, croutons and creme fraiche with paprika on top. Had a glass of white wine with it, perfect. My guest ordered the quiche lorraine. It came with a salad and of course there was bread. The food arrived quickly and the service was just lovely. We had no dessert or coffee.
