My husband and I are beer lovers. Naturally, when we moved to Italy from Charlotte a few months…read moreago, we were really worried about leaving behind all the wonderful craft breweries in North Carolina. So, you can only imagine our pure joy when we discovered Birrone just a few minutes from our new home in Caldogno! They have an extensive offering (8+ beers on draught and even more in the bottle) with something for everyone. I.E. they had an IPA for my hop-head husband and every other style for me. My favorite was the wheat beer, Cibus. Described as "pane liquido" (liquid bread) on the bottle, it was one of the best beers I've had in a while! And, I'm not just saying that because it's hard to find good beer in Italy. Their Cibus could easily hold its own in the US beer scene. The tap room doubles as a restaurant with lots of tasty Italian versions of bar food. On our first visit, we ordered the Tagliere Misto XL, a cutting board that came heaped with piles of porchetta, prosciutto, speck and cheese. Way too much food for 2-people but it was only €10 so we couldn't resist!

The tagliere board, meat board, is an incredible value and includes three killer meats for about 10€, unbeatable. The fries are solid as well. They have hoppy beer selections which is not too common in the area. I had a double India Pale Lager and another single IPL. They were both very heavy on the bready malt and had strong hop bitterness with a little boozyness as well. Solid, extra points for willingness to make a high hop beer. Their star was the wheat beer my wife had. It was incredible and since we are only a couple hours from Germany, not a huge surprise their wheat beer was really good. I like this place, it is unique for this area and reminds me of a place you would find in North Carolina.

On top of that the service was very friendly if not fast. Another living proof of my theory: "ode to the second line restaurants.

The price for a bottle (350ml) of an american indian pale ale, CHF 6.50, was okay, considering the costs of the import. After the first sip of the ice cold beer you won't regret the price ;) The place is really nice for ambitious beer-drinkers as well as for just having a after-work beer. The inside is quite dark and a bit stuffy (me and my friend were the first guests in there, so the later the evening the stuffier the air I guess). Just by the entrance is a small platform on which it's allowed to smoke indoors, because they cut some holes into the window. The tables are made out of piled up beer crates with a wooden board on it. A funny feature are the four swings! Apropos funny: DON'T FORGET TO GO DOWNSTAIRS TO THE TOILETS! There are some few seats outdoors as well, where you can sit along the wall and enjoy your beer. It would be nice if they had a beer tasting, so you could chose five different beers and try a small glass of each one.

We didn't have a reservation, but luckily the staff kindly allowed us to squeeze in for a course before the busy Italian dinner hour around 7:30. We really appreciated the gesture and their hospitality. With so many restaurants to choose from, it can be hard to find a place that feels genuinely local while also delivering great quality. We ordered the bigoli pasta and the beef cheeks, and both were phenomenal. Everything was delicious, and we were so happy we managed to squeeze in.
