This Beach festival was going on during a weekend in August and it's located on the beach of Belmont Shore. It's a smaller event compared to other Island festivals that promote Independent music artists, but mainly we were able to squeeze out some fun out of it. There were a few decent food vendors there that participated. Some of the grub stands are pretty similar to the ones you find typically at a county fair, but it's best to go with Hawaiian food to compliment the experience. There is a beer garden, and in that area there are tables and chairs for seating. I did went with the "Kahlua Pork Sliders" from the Island Style Poke stand and KianaKai's "Shaved Ice". I was disappointed that my local favorite, Dough Dough's Hawaiian Cafe was present, but they closed. The downside of the festival as I mentioned earlier is smaller, there wasn't a lot that was offered to display the culture onsite during the day, because there was not a lot of vendors. But when coming in, I suggest to take your time and soak in the beach environment while live Hawaiian Reggae is playing. The MC who hosted the event was pleasant and gave good intros for the performers on stage. There was a good turn out of people on the sand sitting on their beach towels, who were glued to the music and entertainment. When the sun was setting, going into the evening the DJ played the song "Summertime in LBC" everyone there was on their feet dancing to the "G funk" even the kids! The exciting part of the evening was the Hawaiian fire dance show toward the very end of the event. The rhythmic and skill display from the performances really got me pumped up. You will be amazed by the hula dancers representing the complex art form. Overall, organized and secured event. I would go again with my family and reconnect with some of my island roots and Aloha spirit.

The Jergins Subway is a tunnel that was built under Ocean Blvd. at Pine Ave. in the 1920's as a…read moresafe way to cross under the street. It led from the corner of Pine Ave. (I believe the one opposite Rock Bottom, which is now a hotel) across the street to what is now a parking lot directly across from the Ocean Center building. The builder, Mr. Jergins, designed it with fancy tilework and a huge skylight. The tunnel ran under Ocean Boulevard and connected up with the Jergins Arcade. The Jergins Arcade was also a walk through with a series of shops along the way which opened at the far end onto the Pike. The Jergins Subway had no shops except during the 1930's in the depression when people were allowed to open booths along the walls. These were taken out in 1940. The subway has been closed off since the demolition of the Jergins Trust Building.... not sure when that was. It was recently opened for inspection and local historians say the tile work is still in great shape. The floor tile is in a kind of mosaic that looks like carpet. There is beautiful wall tile going up 10 feet with a decorative cap. Most of the ceiling is also tiled though the skylight has long since been filled in. The tunnel is very long, more than 180 feet. There is some graffiti on the walls and evidence of a homeless camp at the far northern end. The original steps are still there but there is a concrete wall blocking off that north end. I recently found out about the Subway while researching the old Pike and I've been wanting to go try to "find" it. On a recent walk down Ocean Blvd, my bf and I found what we think is a door leading to the inside of the tunnel. It's located in the parking lot across the street from Caso Vino / Ocean Center Building. It's in a fenced off construction site. Very cool that a part of Long Beach's history still exists, virtually untouched, hidden under the street. I hope one day it can be opened again, because not only is it historically significant, but crossing Ocean and Pine (especially at night) can be a little dangerous with all the traffic. Also check out another piece of old Pike history if you're in the same area. Located on Seaside Way & Pine Ave. (right near Casa Vino) is a huge old building up on blocks in a fenced off parking lot. It's an original building from the old Pike.. called the Loof's-Lite-A-Line building that once housed a carousel and later a gaming hall. It's about 90 years old and was considered to be the center of the old Pike. Loof's-Lite-A-Line still exists.. it's located now at 2500 Long Beach Blvd. Thanks to Paul Prosise for some of the text.

The Arts District of San Pedro is a strange little conglomeration of galleries, shops, restaurants,…read morea pawnshop or two, a couple of bars, a thrift store, a coffee house, a tattoo shop, the old Warner Theater, and various places that people claim are galleries but they are simply living inside of these business/industrial spaces perhaps creating their art inside. Or, maybe not? This area is basically defined by 6th and 7th Street, South of Pacific Avenue. Though one could argue it stretches a little bit farther in the various directions. There are certain art complexes in L.A., (say Bergamont station is a great example), where when you visit you will be confronted by numerous galleries that are open and exhibiting their various styles of art. This, however, is not the case with the Arts District of San Pedro. What you do find here, in terms of art galleries, are store fronts that are closed and are open by appointment only. Thus, the question has to be raised, is this an Art's District at all? For me, I look at it as an overall expensive area of San Pedro that was once a functioning downtown but has lost that definition long ago. Thus, the storefronts are simply a place where you know art exists but the chances are you will never truly see it. Therefore, You must see this area as art onto itself. So, when you go here, do not necessarily expect to see any personal creations of art. Simply understand that you have to believe that there is art in the structures, the businesses, the restaurants, and the people that are hiding behind the closed and locked doors that they claim are galleries.

Getting buzzed around noon time was absolutely wonderful, especially with all the wonderful wines we get to taste! Everyone at the wine booths are very nice and very informative. I've noticed that there's a lot of moscato wine booths as well, my favorite! They also have an app called "Second Glass" where you can rate the wine that you've tasted and can bookmark them if you like them. Other than wine tasting booths from many different California wineries, there were also seminars that are hosted. One of them that my buddy and I attended were the sake seminar. Pretty darn awesome!!!! There were also a mini photo area where you can take pictures with provided props and you get to print them out instantly for a souvinir. So darn awesome. Yes that place. The same place where Usher shot his video of " DJ Got us falling in Love" http://www.majestichalls.com/EventVideos.html Great central venue. Because I had something to compare to last year, this is why I would give it 4 stars this year instead of 5. There seemed to be less vendors than last year-Sure I couldn't have drank "over 250 wines" in any given day but I loved the selection last year, including the place in redlands that did the ice slushies. It was refreshing, different, and was much needed to cleanse the pallet. I did wish we had something similar this year. There also seemed to be less "real food" for purchase than last year. This year, the grilled cheese truck was present as well as a "gourmet hot dog" inside the place. I'm wasn't a fan of either one so I opted to walk half mile to Nabeeya (Thanks James for the rec.) for a quick bite. I came back in time to have some sparkling that was in the front. The lines seemed more unorganized this year. Sure most people wait behind the booths but this year, for some reason it felt like people were "driving on the opposite side of the road". If there were lines on the left, I saw people coming from the right. This wasn't too bad because the lines moved rather quickly. The only time it mattered was when the people over the booth were edumacating the public , thus taking time away. The instagram #wineriot was a nice touch. But for private accounts and changing it to public just for a picture, it doesn't work as we waited over 2 hours for our picture. I saw some familiar faces here like Tara Taylor who was over at our favorite Spanish Wines. I saw Erica Nagashima over at #madriasangria . Of course got to chat with James a bit and met his friend Joy. Stopped by the Yelp booth to say HI. (BTW, thanks again @KTB! ) To Morgan, @Morgan1st, I saw you hustling around and I think you guys did a wonderful job.
