I was recommended to see Dr. Chen from one of my good friends. I wanted to find an eye doctor closer to home, and not have to drive to town. Her office is busy but she is a great eye doctor. She takes her time with you and answers any questions you may have. There is parking in front of the office. Her staff are friendly and professional and the office space is kept clean. She is one of Hawaii's best doctors! She also owns the medi spa around the corner. She really cares about her patients. read more

Went in for an eye exam and order contacts and after paying for my visit w/insurance they tentatively quoted me $400 plus for my gas perm lenses. When questioned they said they would confirm with HMSA. They later texted me saying I owed them an additional $200 plus. When questioned they said they made a mistake. Now several weeks later, no call!!! Granted I waited for this appointment since I lost my contacts, and no communication!!! **I don't RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!! Bad customer service and communication! I had a horrible experience with Dr Chen. She was very insulting and actually told me " I had a masculine look, that my "eyebrows were masculine, that my skin was a mess" ( it is dry with excema). She was very harsh and not easy to communicate with- and when I asked for a copy of my records-I was charged $50. And upon reading the records, she altered them to say I was incapable of understanding what she was talking about. Which was an absolute lie. The front staff here are very nice and always helpful, but unfortunately, that's where the positives end for this office. I last visited over a year ago and went a few times, but each time, I felt the doctor was overly pushy about buying products in-office. She strongly recommended I purchase a heat mask and a face wash, claiming they were necessary for my eye health. I later discovered the face wash was just a basic wash with essential oils, and it turns out this office sells its own line of med spa products. On top of that, she also pushed an expensive pair of eyeglass frames, going on and on about how they enhanced my facial structure and made me look great. I fell for it and ended up paying nearly $500 for the glasses, which supposedly had blue light protection and other features she said were essential for my computer work. A year later, I switched to a different eye doctor (at Costco), and they checked my glasses prescription. To my shock, the glasses I had been using daily for work were just 2.5 reading glasses with blue light--nothing special. This is why I am writing this review over a year later. I'm a patient of Dr. Nancy Chen. Back in September 2024, I had cataract surgery on my left eye. I selected the best lens offered. The surgery went well from the start, the staff made me feel so comfortable, reassuring me constantly. I felt confident that Dr. Chen will do an awesome job. Dr. Chen assured me that I will not have no pain. She was correct and the next day I could see an improvement in my vision in my left eye. Dr. Chen had scheduled to do my right eye in October 2024. She was awesome, the staff was on it. The communication amongst the staff, nurses, and doctors were AWESOME ! I would definitely recommend Dr. Nancy Chen to everyone who wants improvement in their vision. I no longer wear contact lens or prescription glasses. I've worn glasses and contacts forever. Location- its in the residence area across raising canes/starbucks location in kapolei. the parking lot is very small, probably about like 8 stalls and some of stalls are reserved for handicap. the day i went in was horrible my appointment was at 3:30pm, and they knew gosh darn well they were behind but did not even bother to tell you when you check in like "hey we are behind like an hour is that okay?" uhm absolutely not. they knew dr.chens foot was broken or in a cast and they still didn't let me know when i checked in at 3:25pm that i was going to be waiting 2 hours .... that was ridiculous. i was about to walk out when they finally called me in almost 2 hours later. the front desk girls were disorganized and didn't seem like they knew what they were doing and had to keep asking each other what to do. then whenever i had a question i felt like i was being rushed out . I swear they said i had to get driving glasses from the office, and now i have to talk to an optician about it, which when i was there no one mentioned about me having to schedule an appointment with the optician, they said all i had to schedule was my annual eye exam. so disorganized and they sound to not care to formally educate patients, like hello were clueless. doctor is good, but she needs to work on her staff. they need to learn to smile, and be patient in educating their patients.. or even the decency to let their patients know they will be waiting for like 2 hours for nothing. ill be going elsewhere for sure. read more

If you are looking for a thorough and professional ophthalmologist then Dr. Chen should be your choice. I have never had a more thorough exam for my eyes. During which I was advised that she discovered that I have glaucoma and cataracts, both of which I was never told about but has been present. She also performed eye surgeries for both of my eyes removing two different pterygiums that others did not want to handle, which resulted in the correction of Astigmatism in one eye, and improved vision in both. I am currently being treated for my glaucoma and I am glad she is the Ophthalmologist treating me. read more

Got my feedback today and doctor coded daughter's problem a medical exam and not under vision. Their reasoning is bc she complained of dry eyes when she wakes up in the morning. If they are doing an eye exam then they take a photo behind the eye to show the blood vessels and retina of both eyes to determine any problems. That alone should be clear. Be sure to screen the things with York customers and the minors' parents first before you proceed on milking their insurance policy. A 9-year-old is not going to be thorough in reasoning. People also don't just come to see an eye doctor for blurry vision for a vision exam. To my understanding of getting eyes checked normally they ask more questions. Lost a household of business from us due to not their reasoning. Staff is responsive but they need to go over pricing up front before billing anything. To me if that common courtesy is not there then all integrity is lost. The cure for the dry/itchy eyes was an over-the-counter eye drops which they gave to my wife upon leaving. I have only reason to believe they want by to use up all of one's insurance. For any one who reads this please be sure to check how they code your exam- medical or vision. read more

LOCATION: Situated within a neighborhood that is probably zoned residential/commercial as a lot of businesses work out of their residences. Kapolei Eye Care sits on a corner. During my recent trip, I got lost because they were told by the association to take their signs down. Which is nonsensical because everyone still has theirs up. I love the location and Dr. Chen is quick and efficient. She will spend enough time with you to discuss present and preventive measures. 6/18/2019 : Had 2 cataract surgeries with Dr. Chen within 2 months of each other. It went without a hitch! I was a patient there for the last few years. I was diagnosed with an illness that comes to find out I didn't have. I was prescribed eye drops and some kind of light treatment that I had to pay out of pocket, when I went for second opinion the new doctor never heard about that treatment. Be aware they have numerous unsatisfied customers and I am never going back to them. They checked my eyes for glasses and thought I would get better care than a optometrist since this is a specialist. I could not see anything more than a reading glasses close up. I could not even see the computer 2 feet away. I was told I should have told them I needed my glasses for computer work also. They know I was still working as a travel agent and naturally on my computer daily. I have never heard of telling the specialist I need my glasses for more than reading. They were the one who did the examination. I could not use my glasses at all and used my old glasses until I could get my insurance to cover perscription glasses the following year. Go somewhere else! This place is unorganized, they don't know who they are helping, the ladies at the front don't know how to work the systems, they keep asking each other for help. My appointment was at 11:30, they couldn't find me in the system. One of the girls with the attitude tried to tell me I needed a referral for an annual eye exam. I called tricare to confirm and as usual, you DONT! I left and didn't get seen, I will go somewhere else. Don't waste your time!!!!!!!!! I've been coming here since 2019 and while the staff is nice it's always something it seems. Back in 2020 they billed me incorrectly as a new patient even though I wasn't and had been there a year ago. Now this time I come in for a contact lens exam and routine eye exam. They tell me the contact lens exam is $80 on the forms) Used to be $50 but okay). When it comes time to check out I'm told it's $125 for my contact lens exam. When I ask why the staff checked and said it was bc I hadn't done my contact lens exam in 2 years. Just wish it was explained to me from the get go. read more

The staff is nice however I was lied to the last two times by a lady named Lisa who answered the phone but didn't listen to me. She said I could come in early and possibly be seen sooner since no one was there. Every time I go here I waste 3hours of my life!!! I tell them my eyes don't dilate the first time and I need two drops per eye...they say well let's try one and see...the last 3times it's taken two drops per eye. Let's not try and see but instead let's notate so we don't have this problem moving forward. The lack in my eyes dialating causes me to be skipped and my appointment pushed further and further back. So I'm due for my annual eye exam and since this place is really close to me I thought I'd give it a try (even with all the bad reviews I read...) At my appointment, I brought in a copy of my old prescriptions for contacts and lenses. I gave it to the tech and she put them in my file to show the Doctor I suppose. I was going to ask for them back since they were the only copies I had...so I told myself I'll ask for them back after my exam is over but I forgot. During my exam, I told the Dr. Eng my eyes have been straining. She didn't really say much but said that maybe because my prescription changed a little. I was like ohh...okay but how much? She was like oh only just a little...I'm like??? Ok whatever. Then we went in to do an eye scan and she said she ordered me some contact lens trials which will take about a week or two to come in and I will come in for a follow up. So...I actually called to see the Dr. Eng again because my eyes have been straining...probably because my perception has changed? I dont know but it was bothering me so I went in again. When I called and made an appointment the receptionist said Dr. Eng is busy but Dr. Chen is available. Im like okay that's fine. So I go in and wait and I was surprised that Dr. Eng called me because I thought I was supposed to go see Dr. Chen. Anyways, she didn't ask what's going on with my eyes or anything she just went straight to looking at my eyes and I had to say what was wrong. Then she said she didn't have my contact lens trial in yet because it wasn't ordered. They forgot. Then she had me do another eye scan because that wasn't in my file from last time either, it got lost. So, I asked her are my eyes okay? nothing is wrong with them? She's like yea it's fine. I'm like okay so are they too dry? Is that why it's so red? She said yea probably and offered me drops. I'm like .....??? Then as I was leaving, I remembered to ask the front desk back for my old prescriptions I brought in and guess what they lost one of the prescription. WOW. So my 2nd visit to this place was just bad. My contact trials weren't ordered, my eye scan from my 1st visit wasn't in my file for some reason and my original prescription I had brought in was lost and wasn't in my file. I'm still waiting on my contact lens trial BTW. So, after my lens trial, I probably won't be coming back there were just too many mistakes that happened and I want a Doctor that's more informative and communicates with me on what's going on instead of me having to ASK. read more

This morning I was sitting on my lanai, looking at the scene in front of me and I realized just how crystal clear my vision is. I'm amazed, still, 5 years after my cataract surgery, how perfect my ability to see is. Wasn't this way for decades. I was severely nearsighted, with my vision starting to go at age 7. I wore glasses then contacts until age 60. Then, when we moved to Hawai'i, I met Dr. Nancy Chen at Kapolei Eye Care. She is who did my surgery. Dr. Chen was absolutely the BEST thing to happen to me regarding my vision! She is exceptional in her skills as a surgeon, her empathy towards her patient, her approach to helping you see better. I STRONGLY recommend her and her wonderful staff. I trust her 110% with my vision care and will continue as one of her patients for as long as I am able. read more

As I entered into Kapolei Eye Care, the friendly receptionist staff members gave me a warm welcome. They were kind, considerate and attentive to my needs. Also, the atmosphere of the waiting room was pleasant. Then... time for my eye exam (which I always feel nervous about). Dr. Young was my optometrist. I was seen today by Dr. Eng. She was very nice, and very informative. Her and the staff made me feel relaxed and worry throughout the entire exam. They explained everything they would be testing for that day, as well as answering all the questions I had. They do accept insurance and you can always call ahead to double check with them if they take your insurance as well. Any new patients would have to fill out the new patient forms. You can either come in 15mins before your appointment to fill them out in person or you can access the forms on their website. Another plus is that they do send out a reminder text to let you know if your upcoming appointment. I appreciate this, since there is a lot of spam calling today I don't answer numbers I don't know. I usually don't check the voicemail right away due to the same reasoning. A tip if you get lost locating this place, give them a call and they can help direct you. i've left a great review previously. Now... not so happy. i understand that each company/ business has to make their money. I just got my bill back and it is $40 when i know my insurance covers and i shouldn't have a co pay. Well, after talking to billing, the eye doctor went ahead and changed my appointment from an annual eye exam to a "MEDICAL EXAM" which automatically creates a co pay and also tacked on a "diagnosis" which i NEVER asked for. My advice is to always get DETAILS of exactly what they are doing before you leave with a hefty bill. read more

Location--the new location is rather small and tend to get overcrowded being that it is shared by PuaMed spa. Staff--dulls in comparison to Dr. Chens personality and knowledge Dr. Chen--Is top notch, she is so personable, patient with the elderly, and very calm. She had saved my daughter-in-law eyesght, my dads emergency, my moms cataracts. Since I have been a patient of Dr. Chen, I have referred more than a dozen family and friends to Dr. Chen. All are extremely satisfied with the care that they received. Bottom Line--Your eyes deserve the best, the location and staff is to be considered, however that pales in comparison to the care you will recieve from Dr. Chen. 100% confidence read more

Dr. Nancy Chan deserves less than one star. First, when I had my appointments at 8 am, I had to wait for about 45 minutes for her to arrive because she was still on her way to the office. Second, all my issues concerning my eyes, she only told me to go home and come back at a later date, and to use the hot compress and medicine that we only sell here and the insurance does not cover. Instead of my eyes getting better, they are getting worse. Finally, when she decided to do something different instead of sending me home, they did not assist me because my previous referral was expired, but my new one was being faxed. Is it possible to give no stars? First, my primary care physician recommended Dr Chen because "she heard good things" about this place. So I'm not blaming her because perhaps others have had a better experience. Secondly, they were able to squeeze me in at 830a because I had something in my eye and wanted to get it checked out. Then I was told to come in at 8a for paperwork. Third, they send you this email saying to do your paperwork online so why come in early?! Because I'm new to this place I thought I'd follow the direction. Fourth, I get in and this place is packed...not sure if they're doing a free clinic or something but all I could think of is that this place is crazy and not inviting., welcoming or comfortable...I had to sit outside in my car. Super ghetto My appointment was at 830 and I was only seen by the aid at 850. So crazy. I mean she is nice. I highly recommend Kapolei Eye Care and Dr. Chen for ALL of your eye/vision healthcare needs. The entire staff is always kind, caring, efficient, and professional. I first saw Dr. Chen in 2016 when I had a painful "grainy" feeling in my left eye but I could not find any relief, no matter how hard I tried. To my surprise, Dr Chen immediately recognized the problem was not my eyeball - it was a tiny blunt stubble of an eyelash that grew inward and was literally scraping the surface of my eyeball! She simply removed the lash and I was finally pain free - after so long - I almost cried I was so happy. Such a tiny thing that was completely missed by another doctor. Since 2016, I have continued to see Dr. Chen and her awesome staff for routine check-ups and the occasional prescriptions for reading and driving glasses. I have also purchased several pairs of glasses from Kapolei Eye Care with ease. Then a couple of years ago my eyes started forming cataracts. I was concerned but Dr. Chen explained exactly what was going on and she patiently walked me through her recommendations for treatment, which eventually included surgery to remove the cataracts and replace both lenses. Dr. Chen kept me well informed about her research for RK/cataract patients, and she also took plenty of time to discuss all of the available options, the various lenses, the state-of-the-art laser technology, and the risks. She also described exactly what to expect before, during, and after each surgery. Dr. Chen's knowledge and vast experience with the equipment and surgical procedures eased my worries. It's been a few months since my surgeries and everything went flawlessly well with both eyes. Truly, my vision after the surgeries has been life changing. read more

I took my mom to Dr. Chen for her cataracts. I didn't expect to get as outstanding of service as I did from a doctor so far out in "the sticks." However I have to say, Dr. Chen is flat out excellent. She is very patient with older people. Extremely friendly to her patients. She speaks several languages; Chinese, Portuguese, some Japanese, some Tagalog. She is quick but thorough. The surgery went without a hitch. It was performed at Pali Momi and they were great too. For what it's worth because she is an MD she can also do botox if you want that. Looking at the certifications on her wall she is definitely top-of-the-class. I couldn't recommend a doctor more highly that her. Wish I could give her 6 stars. read more

The receptionist must have been trained at the same school as "The Soup Nazi". I called to book a massage at the eye centers MediSpa and was told in a very rude way that "we don't do that anymore!". ("No massage for you!!") The biggest issue I have is that I was riding my bike through the neat community where it is located and right on the door it states they do massages at that MediSpa. After reading the other reviews I believe that the Eye Center and MediSpa are probably pretty nice places but the whole staff needs to go through customer service training and perhaps even anger management classes. Very grateful for Kapolei Eye Care especially with Dr. Chen's expertise. I suffered from a severe corneal abrasion without knowing that my vision was slowly being affected. They were able to fit me in on the same day and received an outstanding service from all the staff. My eyes was very messed up. Bloodshot, constant tearing, extreme light sensitivity and severe blurry vision especially right eye. Dr. Chen prescribed me an ointment to keep my eyes moist and to use an eye drop every hour. It helped me but it felt like something else can be done to help me faster (since I need my eyes for something very important). Then she made me try using a product she sells at the office, it's magical! I know it sounds to good to be true, but this is the truth, my eyes got better after maybe a couple of days using the eye drop VS the first treatment provided to me which I did for 1 week. I am now able to see 20/20 again, my blurry vision reached to that extent where I could no longer see the biggest letter on their eye chart (20/400) even with my glasses on. I highly recommend this place. Very attentive and friendly staff. Dr. Chen is really knowledgeable and made me understand that healing is a process but at the same time, she also understood my situation on how I urgently need my sight back (for a training purpose at work). First visit for my son. Asked to arrive 15 mins early to complete paperwork. We were 20 mins early and completed paperwork in 5 mins. Then waited 45 minutes past our appointment time only to be seen for 5 mins by staff for reading eye chart, air puff. Then wait another 20 mins to see the doctor. Care was brief and impersonal. Doctor seemed competent and experienced. Hopefully scheduling was not typical. read more
