i have been several times and have never been blown away.. but sushi in bend is hard to come by and sometimes you just need your fix. i went tonight and ordered some green tea.. got the bill, $5 for green tea. wow.. but what really blew me away and made me write this... calling and asking to speak to the manager/owner and getting william on the phone. i hope he's only a manager.. his reaction, kind of annoyed at my call. 'thanks i'll take that into consideration'. nice. now that mio sushi is in town. actual asian people preparing sushi, big plus! and much better food!! the only draw back is the location.. how long will it take for kanpi to lose enough business with an attitude like william's? the way the economy is coming along and $5 for green tea.. and a manager/owner who's that rude... not long. read more

If you're going to be closed on Sunday, please update your hours online and on the door to your restaurant. Our whole family showed up for a birthday dinner on a Sunday, only to be inconvenienced and disappointed. read more

My husband and I enjoyed Kanpai's happy hour the other night. I was really impressed with the service we received. The waitress was so smooth with her upsell that I didn't even notice it till she was walking away. Her recommendations were right on and she was very friendly in a relaxed manner that didn't come across as pushy or agressive. My personal favorite is the La Pastora yet, the eel was so good that we had to get a second order. Can't wait to go back! read more

Kanpai has by far the best sushi in town! The service and consistency is always there whenever we go. I have now compared a few sushi joints in town, and kanpai is at the top of the list. One thing to keep in mind, it is a bit pricier than most places in town but completely worth it. The inside is small yet it gives you the sense of how sushi bars are in japan; all the tables close together and an open sushi prep area so you actually get to see your sushi being prepared! I highly recommend Kanpai! read more

My husband and I decided to give Kanpai a try for the first time last night to celebrate his birthday. Luckily, I hadn't seen the reviews on Yelp beforehand otherwise we probably would have given it a pass and missed out on some of the best sushi ever! We ordered a nice variety of dishes as recommended by our server, and everything was to die for good. To top off the amazing food, our service was outstanding from start to finish. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys good sushi. read more

BEWARE - Think twice!! We ate dinner there last night 7/2 and not only did we not get all of the things we ordered, have absolutely terrible service, but today we are both sick for the food. There are plenty of CLEAN places in Bend with good service and that won't make you sick! read more

Last night was my second visit to Kanpai and the food was great again! I would have to agree with some of the other yelp reviews though. Both times I thought that the staff had an attitude. read more

My husband and I deeply enjoy our sushi. We have traveled the world sampling flavors from different restaurants. We were not expecting to find one of our favorite sushi restaurants in the land-locked town of Bend...but we did. We would have to say that it was largely due to our extremely talented sushi chef, Jake! His innovative flavor combinations and his obvious passion for what he does put our dining experience above most others. The service was great and the atmosphere pleasurable! An absolute must try! read more

Delicious sushi, friendly staff, nice atmosphere . We enjoy dinning here very much . It's a bit small so go early to make sure you get a table if it's a special night out. read more

Super bummed on this place these days. This was our go to for years, up to 3 times a week. Everything's changed now. The ENTIRE staff has left, which makes sense, since it's so horrible now. We walked in tonight, a Monday & there were 3 tables sat inside. About 10 minutes later someone let us know there was a 10-15 minute wait...hmmmm, with 15 tables open. Everything went downhill from then on. Food took FOREVER & was absolutely awful (we miss you Ian & Ian). No one ever brought us soy sauce, plates, grabbed dirty plates, etc. Our server was super sweet, but terrible. The place never filled up & everything still took over an hour to actually get to us. Sad, but you lost some very loyal customers. Onto Juno & Chi from now on. Sorry Kanpai. (It was sad to hear all of the other patrons complaining too.....small towns & words travel fast, we wish you luck). And please get rid of the creepy server that used to work at Tetherow & The Inn...yuck. read more

Amature! So sad- It was good for a few years. Don't waste your time or money. Waited over an hour for our sushi. Restaurant was empty. Sushi was poorly made and way over priced. I'm sad that this once great sushi bar is no longer a go to in Bend. read more

The food was was good, but quite expensive for the proportion sizes: about half of the plate size we expected for the price. The house music was so loud we had difficulty hearing what our friends across the table from us were saying and we had to repeat our order so the server heard us. Service was slow, it was a half hour between sitting and getting our order taken, and another hour before we got all of our food out. Our server did not bring our complete order, and when we told him that one of our dishes were missing, he said that we had eaten it already. A bit torqued that they automatically tacked 18% to the bill due to our 6-person party - i am happy to tip well for good service, but it was not deserved in this case. Cant imagine what it would take for me to go back. Sure wish the owners would read these reviews and fix some of these glaring and recurring issues. read more

Sushi is like pizza, it's usually always at least good but... Kanpai is f'ing wonderful! I've had several fantastic meals there and it's all good, food, atmosphere (a little small if they're busy) and great chefs. One of the best meals I've ever had in my 52 years was at Kanpai. read more

Honestly terrible, forgot our entire order and we waited an hour for the waiter to finally notice the mistake and place the order for our sushi rolls. Didn't comp anything at all on the bill and just gave us an extra splash of wine. Super unprofessional overall read more

We have been going to Kanpai since they opened. Have spent many thousands dining in and taking out. The service and quality has been slipping for awhile but what cost them our business was a recent call in for a take out order. After ordering $108 worth of sushi (it's always been a bit overpriced relative to the quality of the fish) we were informed that the new policy was to add an 18% gratuity on take out orders over $100. So for an order that requires virtually no wait staff assistance they deem an $19 surcharge appropriate. We changed our order so it was below $100 and spoke to the manager who said it was a necessity because servers have to tip out the chefs. And that's the customer's problem how?? So sad to see the neighborhood sushi restaurant join the ranks of businesses that are capitalizing on the swell of newcomers and affluent tourists. Good luck Kanpai, you can find us at Juno's. read more

My fiancé and I went here last Friday and everything was terrible. No one knew what was going on. We were seated at the bar and not given the paper slip needed to order or asked about drinks or even water. After maybe 10 min, we flagged down a waiter/busser and asked what the system was for ordering. He said (with certainty) that a server would be by shortly. After another 5+ minutes of no one coming by, we flagged him down again at which point he talked to one of the women servers who had him deliver the paper slip to give the bar chefs. We asked about drinks and he finally sent over an actual server. They brought the beer quickly at that point. We put in an order for a roll and Ramen soup. "My" roll came and I we shared it, time passed, we ordered tempura, it came and we ate it, we asked about the soup and were told it was the item that took the longest to prepare. The soup finally came (approx 40 min after we put in the order) and it was terrible and did not have all the ingredients listed. No flavor at all. How can bad soup take that long? Enough time to make a roll, us to eat it, place an order for Tempura, make it, us to eat it, more waiting time? I think they forgot the order as there were so many other problems with the entire system. The couple next to us was having a similar experience and we commiserated together. They did credit us the soup without asking but the damage was done. We live two blocks away but will not return. read more

Kanpai has been my favorite place to eat for over six years now. I started out having "safety sushi" (anything cooked) to appease my husband and his appetite for sushi. Over the years I have tried new things and become a bit braver in the selections I make, no more "safety sushi " for me. A few weeks ago, my husband and I decided to dine Omakase, chefs choice. The things they brought us to eat were out of this world!! Things that I don't eat and never thought I would (like duck) are now things that I will go out of my way to order again. So much more than sushi. The back kitchen is JUST as talented! For a real treat, catch Justin while he is preparing sushi! He is AMAZING! The flavor combinations and textures he puts together for you will knock your socks off and have you craving for more (tell him to surprise you, its fun)! To address the staffing issues, I have NEVER experienced a problem or seen a problem whenever I have been there. For a general rule of thumb keep in mind that what you put out to other people comes back to you. If you treat people the way you would want to be treated, I can promise you will have NO problem. And, I have been the tipsy patron and the patron with a family, I have gone in all by myself, and with LARGE groups of people,so I have given them all kinds of tests. They make me feel like Norm walking into the cheers bar!! Kudos to Justin and his crew, you always keep Greg and I coming back for more!! read more
