a plate of pancakes with strawberries

When visiting Thunder Bay, everyone said I have to try the pancakes at the Hoito. However, this place was closer to me and has better hours (one of the few places open on a stat holiday). This is like a Finnish-style diner (I didn't even know that's a thing). The restaurant is small and attached to their sauna rentals. There are separated tables as well as a U-shaped counter. So much homestyle comfort food on the menu -- think burgers, perogies, chili, etc. Oh and they have wonderful Finnish pancakes -- paper thin, just a little egg-y, and crisp on the edges. Yum!! I had the "mini" size, which was enough for a hearty dessert. You can choose to have it plain with maple syrup, or with strawberries and whipped cream. One of their healthier options is their signature spinach salad which has a sweet maple dressing, sliced apples, almonds, and shaved asiago cheese. It's a great combo - very flavourful! Next time I will have to try their Kanga burger which is a beef patty with maple bacon and melted gouda from the famous Thunder Oak cheese farm... My server was a bit cold (wouldn't kill her to crack a smile just once!), but otherwise, a stellar Thunder Bay experience:)

Such a great place for food! Quality home cooked meals at a fair price! Plus you can have a sauna and a hot tub, so you can't go wrong!

So, we kind of had no other option to eat here before everything closed and we really had nothing to eat. But for what it's worth, it was good. We arrived around 7pm. The dining room still had seating available. All the side tables by the windows were taken, but we were offered a booth table. Our server was nice/friendly. Wait times for the food was decent. I opted to go for the chicken strips basket. I personally would not call this dish a "basket" because neither did it come in a basket nor did it have enough chicken strips to fit in a basket. But, it tasted good - crunchy on the outside and good meat on the inside. The coleslaw and the wild rice soup that was offered weren't top quality, but tasted okay. There honestly wasn't anything impressive about this place, but was able to enjoy a decent meal and a nice window view outside looking out towards Canada.

The coffee was decent and the hospitality very friendly. They were patient with our kids, which is always a plus. For dinner, the salads were just okay (the Caesar salad lacked dressing), but the entrees were all food. Enjoyed the herring/catch of the day because it was only $9.99! The kids meals were a good deal, but a bit unhealthy if you ask me. The kid's cheese pizza was a solid chunk of cheese on so-so dough and the Mac and cheese bites were heavy on the processed cheese and light on the Mac.

My husband and I stopped in to Cascade Restaurant 2 separate times during our weekend trip up to Lutsen. The restaurant was conveniently located 5 minutes from our lodging- Thomsonite Inn. When you first enter, you grab a menu, sit wherever is open, and order at the register which is a different set-up but worked well for them. Our 1st visit, I ordered the seafood chowder and fried chicken dinner which were both phenomenal. Every spoonful of the chowder was filled with clams and fish. The portion size of the extra crispy fried chicken fed me for 2 nights. I left there so satisfied! When we came back for breakfast, I had another delicious meal of the avocado toast with balsamic glaze. I would definitely come back here for the delicious food next time we road trip up North again.

We were told they were at full capacity with a 45 min wait but then our kind server moved around a few tables for us and got us in. Very considerate. The till style ordering works very well as it gives everyone a chance to order when they are ready, removing the frustration of eating for a server. (Wait was surprisingly short, pleasantly surprised.) Food was good! I had a house salad because I wasn't feeling like anything big, but it was a great salad. Side note- spent about an hour admiring this fish with my dad and heatedly debating what type of fish it is. Only to notice after all this time there was a title under it Came for the food, stayed for the fish
