I looked everywhere. When we walked into town, I go into the Gun Flint and ask the bartender if she could check to see if anyone had found them. My wife and I were saying "right, in this day and time, who turns in a pair of found Ray Bans". The bartender, i think her name was Jennica, took the time to check in the office and then go upstairs to the Nest. I was in shock that she came back with my sunglasses! The guy who cleans up at night (Lennie?) found them and turned them in. The music was great, the drinks were great. Service was excellent.

My husband loved the walleye, and everything we had was excellent. Sitting at the bar gave us a chance to watch your team in action. The food runners were so jolly and so interested in making sure you got exactly what you ordered. We noticed the same dishwasher working incredibly hard both nights, and it was obvious that every person plays an important role. The friendly bartenders, servers, kitchen staff, and support staff all worked together seamlessly with genuine pride and teamwork. Great restaurants don't happen by accident. It's clear the manager has built a culture where everyone supports one another and truly cares about the guest experience. We travel extensively, and seeing a team like this is rare. Gun Flint Tavern is a place we always recommend to anyone visiting Grand Marais, and after another wonderful weekend, we'll continue doing exactly that. We can't wait to come back!

Getting the setting correct with the finicky needs for stand-up (stage, spotlight, working PA system, crowd in tight to the stage) is no mean feat. Thankfully the hall was accommodating. A large space with some pillars to be aware of, it's a fairly decent place for a catered event. The imaginative event coordinator pretty much has a blank canvas that can be used to full effect. Lights are on dimmers to control the intimate degree of light, and a raised stage at the front has its own lighting system to provide attention to the stage for performers, speakers or bands. The hall is also large enough to accommodate a couple of hundred at round tables as well, so this is good for ceremonies and weddings of many types. I've been told that in addition to the comedy show we put on, the hall has seen weddings, award ceremonies, and metal bands. Christian rock?

However we were misinformed as voucher is only good for continental breakfast, not brunch. The manager made an exception due to misinformation. Kudos to the manager. Room very clean. However, housekeeping did not do a thorough job first night (trash not emptied, short on towels). Also had to call maintenance to fix TV and repair shower handle. Maintenance was very prompt and effective. The hotel just needs a little oversight on small issues like this. Hotel is located in the harbor district and footbridge gives access to downtown. Not sure I would venture there after dark. The Bright restaurant next to hotel is outstanding. Go there. Would stay there again. Keep traveling.

Everything has a charge, they'll nickel and dime you to death here. $10 starting for breakfast might get you a muffin... $25 parking but it's heated underground so I bought that for convenience instead of having to lug the luggage carrier through snow then up stairs into the front foyer ( which really they should have bellboys for that but don't) Honestly I don't know how these big chain hotels think they can drop amenities, gut guest services and charge you on top of the hefty price of a nights stay for less. I'm surprised they don't make you wash the linens when you're done. Being a member means nothing, no perks, no late checkout, unless you're a farmer and think noon is late. LESS FOR MORE pretty much sums it up. Perks? I mean if you're conference is being held here staying here means you don't have to walk across the tracks might be the only perk aside from the view but ya you've gotta pay extra for that too! lol I could go on but it's already 11pm and I've got an early late checkout so.... Book a room at the Holiday Inn Express and be treated like a king for less!

No one came to check in on us consistently, no one refilled water glasses, the waiter looked and spoke to us unprofessionally (like, would literally leave in the middle of speaking to us), and the only other worker I saw looked so stressed out. The place looked so run down too. The women's bathroom literally had a whole tub in it, the sink was rusted, and the hot water tap in the sink didn't even work, so I hope the employees have another sink with access to hot water so they can properly wash their hands. Management needs to update the decor and the bathrooms. They also either need to get their asses out on the floor to assist, or turn people away if their servers are overworked and untrained like this. I love supporting small businesses, so I hate making reviews like this, but this was the worst meal we had our whole trip. Disappointed to say the least.

First of all, you walk into The Foundry and you're blown away. It's beautiful, and it's buzzing with activity. It has a very chill vibe and it shows. Service was decent although it was pretty busy when I was in. Which caused some delays with some things. Something great to see was the chef bringing food out and assisting the servers. You can tell there is a great team atmosphere here within the entire staff. The menu is quite dynamic, it has a little flair on many of the mainstays of your typical bar menu. There are some menu items which will cater to the more adventurous types as well. Our food was piping hot and quite tasty, different from anything else being served in the neighbourhood, We had the Nachos, Spring Rolls, Pulled Pork, Burger and the special which was a lamb pita. They sound quite standard but they're quite fun and executed perfectly. Definitely a fine addition to our north core. Got a little loud later on in the night when the bar crowd rolled on and service slowed down quire a bit, but it was still totally enjoyable. As stated a couple times already, the decor in The Foundry is breathtaking, extremely historical like it's been there since the turn of the century. Great selection of beers on tap, and a couple great bartenders who make a great mojito!! Service was ok, although it can be forgiven because they were extremely busy. Our server Maylynn was great although she did seem very overwhelmed at times. However food was prompt and very tasty. We had the Mexican Spring Rolls which were different but quite good. As well as the best Nachos I think I may have ever had in T-Bay!! Not really much of a dinner place, but I hear they have been running entree's now. However, they really make up for it with some quite incredible appetizers and great drinks!! Also had the Cookie Skillets which were positively sinful!! All in all a very positive experience! First visit to The Foundry and can't wait to go back. The decor is quite stunning inside and the menu seems to be straight ahead bar fare at first glance, but once you really start to read it absolutely is not. It has a little flare on each item to really make them special. We had the Deep Fried Pickles which were absolutely perfect.. Spicy mango dip was quite delicious and the plating is very original. Service was quite good. Katie our server was attentive and lovely. For dinner we had a great burger and nachos which were very well done as well. Definitely the best burger on Red River. The chef came to talk to us at the table and was very kind in answering all of our questions about the decor, owners and philosophies. Definitely enjoyed the mini persians as well, great twist on a local fave. The best new spot to hit Thunder Bay in a very very long time! Can't wait to go again!! read more

The bartender and waitstaff seemed to know him well, so I asked if he worked there. He was the head chef. By the time we ate and left it was like we were old friends. Really enjoyed talking with them and getting some ideas for an early dinner. We decided to start with the beer cheese, nothing like I have ever experienced. It was very good and the pretzels were hot and fresh. An excellent appetizer. Then we split and order of tacos. Since the chicken tacos were a special of the day, we split an order of two and a side of fries. Does Canada celebrate Taco Tuesday? The tacos were excellent and a delicious twist on the ones we are accustomed to in Texas. We enjoyed the entire visit...food, beer, and conversation. I gave them each an American two dollar bill and they had never seen one. Win Win. I highly recommend this place. The bar became busy and cheerful, but not loud and boisterous. Also explained which section was appetizers/shareable plates and which were mains. Also mentioned that the menu is seasonal and everything on it currently is so good. After giving us some time to choose, she took our order. We ordered one shareable, Tuna Crudo. It was well balanced being sweet, sour, creamy, fresh, and with a tiny little kick. It made it evident that the mains would be really tasty as well. Server came back to not only take away the empty plate, but also swapped out our small plates and cutlery for new ones. Both of our mains arrived at the same time, descriptions of what ingredients were in each. Portion size was definitely fair (not too little and not huge) so we left satisfied and full, but not stuffed. Only regret was that we were only a party of 2, otherwise would have loved to order their Family Style Tasting (the table next to us had it and everything looked delicious). In terms of ambience, seating is cozy, as there isn't a whole lot of space between tables, but it's workable. As well, the lighting is pretty dim for our preference, but can understand why others might enjoy it. We walked over from our hotel, but looks like there is street parking in the area. Overall, had a very pleasant dining experience and service and hospitality was top-notch.

Once we stepped in, we were warmly greeted with a lively dining room, and were quite surprised with the diversity and uniqueness of the menu. We started with Canadian old-fashions, and crab cakes. For dinner had their bus 16 oz steak special which was very nicely done, and the rabbi pasta. We Wish we had more room to try the pizzas because they looked great. We Finished it off with the peanut butter cheesecake. The waitress was charming and very helpful with making our decisions, even though she was supporting a very busy room. A real gem for thunder Bay, great place and great value. It's well worth the five minute drive away from the touristy downtown choices.

I have had these items before and loved them. The Fritto Misto had more vegetables and shrimp than calamari and the Brussels sprouts in the dish were tough. The pizza seemed undercooked and the crust was not a thin pizza crust but seemed to be a tortilla. I know that restaurants are facing difficulty in this economy. But if the restaurant cannot maintain its reputation it is time to alter the menu.
