My husband and I stopped in to Cascade Restaurant 2 separate times during our weekend trip up to Lutsen. The restaurant was conveniently located 5 minutes from our lodging- Thomsonite Inn. When you first enter, you grab a menu, sit wherever is open, and order at the register which is a different set-up but worked well for them. Our 1st visit, I ordered the seafood chowder and fried chicken dinner which were both phenomenal. Every spoonful of the chowder was filled with clams and fish. The portion size of the extra crispy fried chicken fed me for 2 nights. I left there so satisfied! When we came back for breakfast, I had another delicious meal of the avocado toast with balsamic glaze. I would definitely come back here for the delicious food next time we road trip up North again. read more

We started out the day here with breakfast before our long day exploring Lutsen. We chose this spot because it's in a great location close to Cascade River State Park. When you first enter, you grab a menu and order at the register before grabbing a seat at a table. When we arrived, there was plenty of tables to choose from, which was super convenient for us. I personally chose VEGGIE OMELETTE with home fries/sourdough bread. The plate was decently sized. This is a good breakfast option. The omelette wasn't too fancy, but had all that it needed. We have stayed at Cascade Lodge twice now this year - once in the main lodge and once in a cabin. The cabins are great because they are pet friendly (for an additional fee). The lodge was nice - we had a room with a kitchenette and full fridge. The door to our room at the lodge opened directly into the shared lodge lounge, which took away from the privacy a little. We could hear the conversations being had in the sitting area. Conversely, it was nice to be able to pop out and sit in the large open space and look out over the lake. The next trip we plan, we will definitely book a cabin again. I think the added privacy is worth it, and it has a more rustic and historic feel. You also get a small discount at the restaurant when you stay at Cascade. The food is pretty good diner food. For breakfast, I've enjoyed the croissant sandwich, and my partner has tried a variety of options (omelette pictured). For dinner, the fish and chips were pretty good (though Angry Trout and Fisherman's Daughter do have the best fish and chips if you drive up to Grand Marais). Definitely recommend staying at the lodge if you're on the north shore! read more

We were told they were at full capacity with a 45 min wait but then our kind server moved around a few tables for us and got us in. Very considerate. The till style ordering works very well as it gives everyone a chance to order when they are ready, removing the frustration of eating for a server. Pretty delicious food. Nice interior with a rustic touch. They have live music on the weekends. Hot tip you get 10% off if you stay at Cascade lodge or the cabins. Interesting & varied menu. Items like salmon roasted chowder and chicken pot pie. We both got sandwiches that were delicious and the sweet potato fries were very good and plenty of them. The way they have it set up is a little strange so if you haven't been there before you have to figure this out. It is hand written on a sign by the desk, but nobody read science when they first walk in. It's a seat yourself arrangement and then you go up to the front to order. No one comes to your table unless they're bringing you water or your paid for food. As far as how expensive it is , it's on the higher end 20 to 30. I honestly don't even know where to start--this place is such a gem. The location is unbeatable. It's right across from Lake Superior. Yes, there's a road to cross, but it's quiet and open--you'll see any car coming. Once you're across, there's a little fire pit, a couple of picnic tables, and stairs that lead right down to the shoreline. We spent so much time just sitting on the rocks and taking it all in. I stayed in the main lodge and it was so charming. The room was spotless and cozy, and the whole building has this welcoming, relaxed vibe. Upstairs are the rooms, and downstairs there's a shared space where you can play games, read, or listen to records. There's even a beautiful old piano and cozy chairs by the window. Right outside the front doors are Adirondack chairs facing the lake--perfect for morning coffee or a slow evening. There's also a restaurant on-site, and the food was super tasty. One night they even had live music, which made it feel extra special. If you're coming from the cities and want a North Shore getaway without going full "camping mode," the main lodge is definitely the way to go. But they've also got adorable cabins--some along the river--a playground for kids, and a community fire pit. I seriously can't say enough good things about this place. I've already recommended it to like 30 people and will definitely be back soon. If you're heading to Lutsen, Cascade Lodge should absolutely be on your list. read more

Different setup from what we remember from years ago. So now you grab a menu at the front when you wake in, find a clean table and when your ready to order you place order at front. We had the reuben with fries, it was ok. Fries were $2.50 extra. Blue cheese burger with fries was ok as well. Not much blue cheese and bacon was not cooked enough. BLTA with chips was average again. Avocado was rock hard, had to pick out. Bacon was fine as were chips. $65 for 3 sandwiches and 1 soda and considering there was no table service, it was overpriced for what it was. Parking also sucks. There is about 8 spots in front, its angle parking and super tight. Also for what its worth, there is no cell service and we were told its because they are in the national park and it blocks service. We had to connect to wifi to make a phone call. read more

We stayed at Cascade Lodge for three nights and absolutely loved our experience. The first night we were in Cabin One, which was cozy but a little small for us, so we moved to the Creek Chalet -- and it was pure magic! The chalet is a beautifully upgraded five-bedroom home, perfect for families or groups looking for extra comfort and space. We also enjoyed dining at the restaurant every night because the food was so good we couldn't resist coming back. The Simply Sausage flatbread pizza was yummy, the Wild Rice Crunch Grain Bowl was fresh and flavorful, and the Coconut-Crusted Walleye Fingers were perfectly done -- truly delicious. Cascade Lodge is a wonderful place to stay, relax, and eat well. We can't wait to return! read more

You can't beat the view from this place! It sits on Lake Superior and the view just adds to the entire experience. We ate in the main room which had a very northwoods vibe with a stone fireplace and wood paneling, ceiling, and floors. They tell you to grab a menu and a table and come back to place your order. This was very efficient. No more wondering when they will be back to get your food order! They brought water to the table after you settled in. I had a basic cheeseburger and fries. I literally raved about how fresh and crispy the lettuce and onion tasted on it. The burger was a 10, and the fries were pretty darn good too. This rating is for the lodge as I didn't have a chance to visit the restaurant. I was honestly really pleasantly surprised by this place! Much better than a hotel and probably cheaper than a hotel in this area and much much cheaper than the Airbnbs nearby. For a quick weekend trip up north this was perfect. The room was comfortable and private with a view of the lake, and the staff were to friendly and accommodating even when I arrived close to midnight on the day I checked in. The lobby area is so cozy and I would love to spend another weekend up there in the winter just sitting by the fire and reading with a wine and a coffee. I didn't feel like I needed a kitchen either which can be the draw of an Airbnb but we were busy and ate out the whole weekend so I didn't feel like anything was missing. Only complaint is that the bathroom was obviously dated and the shower drain didn't drain very well - you can tell that they did their best to update the building but in the bathroom the old structure of the plumbing definitely shows! Food was good! There are two reasons for me reducing stars. Forced 20% Gratuity since we were technically a party of 8 even though we all ordered separate. I would understand this if they actually served us, but we had to put our own tables together, and it's already required that you walk up and order so being forced to tip that high is pretty crazy. The second thing is the insane 3.9% Card processing fee. I run a business and know that it does not cost that much, so they're using that to make extra money. Besides that the food and atmosphere was nice and it overall was an enjoyable experience. read more

So I was happy to be going up to the Duluth area for an early Father's Day gift from my significant other. We went and enjoyed a few activities and decided to eat dinner at the Cascade restaurant. Parking wasn't bad at all, we walked in and were greeted and told to sit wherever we wanted and come up to the front when we were ready to place our orders. We looked over the menu and I felt it wasn't a lot of items that really jumped out at me. So I played it safe and ordered the grilled chicken naan, and my significant other ordered the chicken bacon ranch flatbread. This place had nice decor, was pretty clean and the staff were friendly. So our food came out pretty fast as the restaurant wasn't very busy. A gentleman brought out our food, and asked if we needed anything additional I asked for barbecue sauce and he returned with it. I have to say the first disappointment for me was when the staff member at the register told us none of the meals could be modified because they were already premade that morning. That kind of made me a little leery because I guess I prefer freshly made food. Furthermore, I was disappointed when I received my chips with my order and the kettle chips were overcooked, they were very brown and a few of the chips weren't. I decided to find some chips towards the bottom of the basket that weren't too overcooked. Upon digging I found a chip that had a hair on it it appeared to be an eyelash or something of that sort. So at that point, I no longer wanted to eat any of the chips and just ate my grilled chicken naan. The chicken naan was good, there was plenty of chicken, cucumbers, and arugula. I liked how quiet this establishment was, and overall it seemed like a great find. After our meals were almost complete a woman came out and asked how our food was and my significant other said it was okay and I told the woman not really. She asked what the problem was and I told her the kettle chips were overcooked and there was a hair on one of the chips. The woman asked if I had the chip still and I told her I put it back in with the other chips since I was finished with my meal, but that I had a photo of it on my phone. The woman asked if she could see my phone and I said sure, she took it to the gentleman at the register. She came back shortly after and asked me to join her at the register. I came up and the guy at the register was apologetic as was the woman and they issued me a refund for my food. I thought that was a very nice gesture since before that happened everything was really good. I know mistakes happened so I am not going to make a big deal about it. I am however not sure how I feel about not being able to modify my food, that might be a deal breaker for me. I do however feel they genuinely care at this establishment, however, I don't get up that way very often, so I don't think I will revisit this restaurant, but I do wish them well. read more

Stopped here spur of the moment after hiking in Lutsen on our way to Grand Marais. It was a quiet morning so we were greeted and seared immediately. Well rounded breakfast menu with prices varying from $7 to $17. I got the avocado toast with egg. It was a bit dry, but decent overall. My boyfriend got 2 pancakes and 2 sausage patties. Both were great--and he couldn't finish it! I recommend swinging by for a casual, fast dining experience right on highway 61. read more

We had breakfast and dinner here on the same day. For breakfast, I wanted something simple and chose the oatmeal served with raisins, brown sugar, and milk. Husband had the Cascade Classic. Both were good choices. The process is that you pick up a menu when you enter and get in line to order. You get a number and they bring your food to your table. Not my fav but if restaurants are short staffed and this helps keep them open, I'm willing to go with the flow. We got there at about 6:30pm on a Tue for dinner and the place was packed. We probably waited for 15-20 to order and our ticket got lost so our food came after an hour and only because we asked. I had the Greek salad and husband had a burger. The salad was really good but small. Could have used a bit more lettuce. Lots of good toppings though. Burger was good but didn't come w fries. The home made kettle chips were excellent. Despite our dinner issue, I still rated a 4. Food was very good, view of the lake was lovely, and we weren't in a hurry anyway. I got to drink another Guinness while I waited. read more

I hate dinging small town restaurants. This one, unfortunately, deserves this score. You seat yourself and then order from the counter. Silverware and menu are on the table. I don't have a problem with this type of set up, especially with everyone being short-staffed. My problem exists when the people you do come in contact with are rude. So since we've removed all customer service, it becomes solely weighed on the food. The menu is solid. Tons of decent options that sounded tasty. We ordered the Wild Burger and Walleye Dinner. My walleye was burnt to a crisp. What a waste of a normally delicious fish. The wild rice was undercooked as was the broccoli. Not only were they almost raw, they were ice cold. The burger wasn't over cooked, more just a grease bomb on a bun. the description sounded like it should've had tons of flavor. Sprinkle enough salt and ketchup on the waffle fries and they weren't awful. This place should've been an easy 5*. It has the location, the view, the live music, the cabin feel. Maybe the staff need to take a happy pill and the cooks reminded that quality is of importance. Bummer. read more

Top notch customer service! We placed an online order for carryout but upon arriving at Cascade, we found out the restaurant never received the order (the staff we spoke with said this was the second time this had happened with a customer today). My boyfriend placed our order in person with them and upon arriving back to the car with two huge lemonades! The woman he spoke to had offered him beer because of the issue with the order but he had declined so she gave him the lemonades. They were delicious and really hit the spot after a looooong hike today. It had to be house-made, it was just the right balance between sweet and refreshing (not overly sugary like some store-bought lemonade can be). Restaurant staff brought the food out to the car for us despite not having curbside carryout and were very apologetic about the error with the order not going through. The food was really good as well! We got burgers, which were char-grilled and flavorful. We also got an order of waffle fries and asked for Cajun mayo. I highly recommend it, it works GREAT as a dipping sauce and is so good! The food traveled well back to our hotel (about a 13-minute drive) and was still pretty warm and fresh by the time we sat down to eat. Overall good experience even with the initial hiccup with the order! Restaurant staff said they put a call in about the issue and getting it resolved. read more

We ate at Cascade a couple of times during a recent visit to the North Shore (though we did not stay there). Overall, I would say it's a wonderful little place. The atmosphere is relaxed but beautiful. The large windows int he front of the building give you a lovely scenic view of the lake. The staff was really nice and accommodating. I appreciated that they were quick with the refills and to handle any request we had. The first time we stopped for dinner. We got the pretzel bites, which I would totally recommend. Really delicious. The second time we stopped for lunch and got the pretzel bites again and also the walleye fingers, which were good but I liked the pretzel bites better. For dinner I got the fried chicken, which came with potatoes, gravy, delightfully garlicy broccolini and a dinner roll. The chicken was SO GOOD. It was so crunchy on the outside. My husband got the beef salad, which he said was fine. At lunch I got a burger (fine) and my husband got the chicken because he clearly was jealous from dinner. Go here, eat good food.
