07.09.25 Switzerland was leg number 6/7…read more Zurich was hub but made sure to do a tour to see the Swiss Alps. Titlis was an hour from Lucern and the scenery driving to the tram was very idyllic. Taking the tram to the top took a good 20-25 minutes. We beelined for the ice cave which was exciting for the kids, one plays hockey and my girl figure skates so no biggie for them. I on the other hand was super careful not to slip walking on ice. I already broke my coccyx snow boarding once. I wasn't going to do it again at 10k ft elevation. Make sure to wear hiking shoes with good traction. It was very gloomy and cold that day, felt like winter because of the summer storm. We all braved going outside to do the cliff walk but the visibility was no more than 5ft, only my daughter and hubby got to the end of the suspension bridge. It felt like Mt Everest and we only had our last minute parkas and hoodies purchase on so my fingers were frozen popsicles. Our tickets also included the ice flyer but because we were going to be exposed to the frigid temp, we decided to ditch it and cozied up inside the restaurant for some hot cocoa. On our way down we got off Trübsee, explored the lake and got a little too close to the grazing cows, they do stink. Despite the crappy weather, it was an exciting adventure for the family.

The first part of the experience is a ride in an old-fashioned wooden train car with open sides to allow the scents of green meadows and cow manure to awaken the senses. Nice. But, then, we got off and walked aboard the double decker, convertible cable car and that's when the real adventure began! Steel cables and a pulley system glide the cable car up to a 7,000 (or thereabouts) elevation. At times during the ride, it felt like the car swooped over a hump causing everyone in the car to gasp and scream, not unlike being on a stand-up roller coaster. Meanwhile, the views were simply breathtaking. At the top, we were lucky enough to be the first group up so we had sweeping views of the mountains unfettered by crowds. This level has the a restaurant and gift shop, but if you go, do make the time to take the side trail or walk up to the top viewing platform for even more amazing views overlooking the lake region. The lodge is really in front of the train station and we got our room very quickly. They have a big room to leave the snow gear and i like the heating system they have for the snowboard/ski boots. I shared a double room with a friend and it was really cozy. Loved the deco of the hotel, with lots of old skis hanging on the walls. Since we were a group we already had food included in the package. So we had an apero when we got there, great breakfast, sandwiches to take with us for picnic and at night, on Saturday, a superb 3 course dinner! The sevice was great and the people super nice! The owners are swedish, so it is a popular place for them, but they all spoke german or english as well. Only minus point, was that the jacuzzi was broken, so we ended up going to another hotel to get into the spa, since the lifts were closed due to avalanche alarm on the mountain. Would love to come back, really liked it!

Track, time, rail line etc. I found the station very clean and very friendly with a police presence that was willing to help if you had questions. The tourist information booth was in plain sight and provided lots of pamphlets, maps and recommendations for just about anything you need. I was amazed at how many trains were going to so many places around Europe. Again my first experience in a train station so I was a little bit in aww. lol With a nice selection of food court and retail shops you could use to kill some time if you were early for your connection. And a short walk to many traditional Swiss restaurants right on the Reuss river where it meets Lake Luzern. But be warned. Trains arrive and depart on time! So don't get distracted with the shops. Lol All in all a very quick but nice experience. I would definitely be ok with traveling by train again.
