This emporium feels like a slice of Tokyo, offering a massive selection of authentic groceries, specialty ingredients, and even unique kitchenware and stationery that you won't find in a standard supermarket. The variety of ready-to-eat options is impressive--from fresh sushi and bento boxes to delicious matcha croissants and mochi doughnuts. It's a great spot to grab a quick, lunch or pick up high-quality snacks and pantry staples. Whether you're there to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and frequent cultural events, it's a fantastic experience in the heart of Leicester Square!

I'm not personally into sweet things but they have a great range of sweets and pocky sticks. They sell kitchenware items like chopsticks, cooking utensils and bamboo whisks. They also have cute little stationary that isn't expensive and will make great stocking stuffers closer to Christmas. We tried a couple of bakery items, including a matcha croissant and a mochi doughnut which I've always wanted to try. The doughnut was nice and lighter than a regular one. The croissant was flaky and really nice but the matcha-white chocolate type topping was too sweet for me personally. I'll definitely be back for more bamboo shoots and fermented foods!

Phoenicia is a lot: it's a supermarket, a butcher, a quick-lunch place, as well as a place where you can come to and have a lovely chat with a friend while eating away at their delicious selection of baklava. As for the wraps/sandwiches, there are basically two choices: the Lebanese wrap (a plain flat-bread wrap) or the Moroccan wrap (a flat-bread with spinach inside). Once you've made this difficult choice, you have to make more choices...you can fill your wrap with salads (such as tabbouleh), spreads (such as humous) and meats (such as spicy chicken or merguez). But, if you don't want to choose, you might as well order two kinds of wraps as the prices of one is very reasonable. Later, you may want to top it all off with a nice baklava, which you might even get for free if you're really nice. In fact, speaking of nice, the service here is super-friendly. Everyone is very polite and they bring your food to the table... After your lunch (or whatever you've had) you should go check out their supermarket...you will basically find here anything you need. They also have a very nice selection of organic products.

However, Loon Fung does have a butcher, which is unique for Chinatown supermarkets. Look for good prices on pork belly, a favourite for Chinese cooks long before it became fashionable in trendy restaurants. Also worth a browse to see cuts that you won't find in Tesco - pigs' trotters and pigs' ears! I also think Loon Fung is the best Chinatown supermarket to buy longans, a round fruit with brown skin. For a mental picture, think of a lychee and shrink it about half. Now, get a mental taste of lychee, sweeten and intensify the flavour, make a little more perfumed and juicy and that's the taste of longan. Wonderful!! If you see them, get some to try and you won't regret it.

Unfortunately, the cashiers were possibly the slowest ones I've ever encountered in a Chinese grocery. Now -that's- a bargain I can buy into.

I LOOOOOOVE ATARIYA!!!…read more Seriously! This is the best shop for Japanese food in London (I am shocked that I did not review it yet!!) It is tiny...so expect to queue around the whole shop for sashimi/ fish if you come here at the weekend! The sashimi is amaaaazing! The shop is busy, with a high turnover, so the fish never has a chance to rot or become smelly. This means when you enter the shop, you'll be greeted with a lovely smell of rice vinegar. It never smells fishy, despite all the fish. They cut the sashimi for you freshly, so you can ask for it to be cut sushi-style or sashimi-style. I like Sashimi-style better as you get larger chunks of fish. I recommend the following if you'd like to try their sashimi: - Hottate (Onmygoodness the raw scallops here are soooo good!) - Amaebi (sweet little shrimps) - Saba (mackerel) - Tamago (I really like their dashimaki, eggrolls - they'll slice as much as you like for sushi) - Salmon - Hamachi - yellow tail tastes lovely, and has a slightly 'bite-y-er' texture than salmon - The toro (tuna) is good (melts in your mouth) but to be honest, I love the other sashimi more. Other mouth-watering food available: * Frozen gyoza - we always have some in our freezer for tastey-fast-food emergencies * Frozen edamame - much cheaper than eating out! * Kabocha - a bit like butter nut squash...only better! * Croquettes - I love the curry-flavour ones :) * Huuuuge bags of rice (if you ask nicely, they'll open a bag, and just sell you part of it) * Frozen unagi and the sauce to serve it with * Cup ramen/udon and all the noodles to cook yourself! * Sooo many happy Japanese sweets * Essential speedy food like furikake (the yummy food to shake over rice to make an instant meal) or packets of ready-to-go miso soup. There is lots more...you'll have to head West to explore Atariya yourself!! The staff are all really nice, so if you need help in choosing, just ask for their advice. The Japanese bloke with a moustache is an absolute legend!! *Damn writing this review has made me hungry!!*
