How L&I Towing Shook Me Down for $100 Bucks And Almost Left Me Stranded…read more Saturday June 20th around 10 p.m. I discovered my car in the process of being towed from a parking spot in front of the Stanley Apartments on 49th and Underwood in Dundee. I saw no indication the spot where I parked was restricted to tenants, so I was really confused. The tow truck driver told me he was towing me because a tenant had called and complained. I asked him why there wasn't a sign or something, and he pointed to a tiny "Leased by City of Omaha" sign that was NOT in front of the spot where I parked. Tow truck driver demanded "$100 to drop the car." Had no choice - I paid in cash, he dropped the car and left, after dragging it backwards about 4 feet so it was sticking into the street. Getting in, my key would not turn. I had no idea which towing company the driver had been from, so I knocked on several doors at the apartments to see if anyone knew. A very nice resident came out and enlightened me about several things: 1. All the reserved parking signs for the apartment complex had been REMOVED from the street due to utility work. The signs were sitting on a picnic table in the courtyard which at the time was totally dark. 2. The sign said to call L&I Towing. I called to tell them someone tried to tow me and now my key wouldn't turn in the ignition. The dispatcher on the phone denied that they had anything to do with it and basically said, "Wow, tough luck that you can't drive your car." 3. The resident also told me that the residents never call the towing company. Drivers regularly check window stickers and tow cars that do not have them. If I had arrived five minutes later, I would have thought my car was stolen because I would not have known who took it or where because there was no sign. Luckily, by cranking the steering wheel a few times, we were able to start the car and drive it home, and everything seems okay. The Stanley Apartments property manager was negligent in failing to put temporary signage or something to indicate reserved parking. L&I Towing is a predatory company that does not seem bothered by good business practices, based on my experience and other angry reviews I read. But kudos to the kind guy from the apartments that came outside and helped me out.
